Hey!! Thanks so much for watching!! There's no designated "pre-vet" program in Canada! To get into vet school you can take any undergraduate program as long as you can meet all the prerequisites to apply to vet school in that program! Hope that helps!

Can you tell me what are some pre-requisites for high school classes that would be good to take?

Would histology and comparative histology but in humans be considered a cell biology course? I had a 4 hour lab with both. I went to Waterloo University…But always going to Guelph University because their library was amazing! Thank you! Susan

It depends on the school you're applying to so double check that, but for most schools that's what you have to do!

Hi! I was wondering for the stats course, can it be a psychology stats or does it have to be general stats? Also, can there be overlap between the courses used for prereqs and the courses in the last 2 semesters?

It depends on the school you're applying too! If you're applying to ovc you can check which stat pre-req courses count here: www.ovc.uoguelph.ca/recruitment/en/applyingtodvm/Academicrequirements.asp In terms of overlap, this is what was posted on the OVC website: "Courses will not be acceptable if they are repeats of previously passed courses, or if they are taken at the same level or a lower level in a subject area than previously passed courses in the same subject area.This includes courses with significant overlap in content. Students should consider their institution's course sequencing in determining if a course is considered the same level. Repeating a course or taking a course with significant content overlap may result in the entire semester being deemed inadmissible" If you want to check on the overlap of a course you can send an email to admdvm@uoguelph.ca 😊 hope that helps!

Hi I recently found your channel and I have a question for you! :) I’m a senior in high school and I graduate in May. So far in college I listed nursing as my major but I’ve always wanted to be a veterinarian. I have no experience with animals but I’ve taken “veterinarian” like classes (ex: aquatic science, equine science, small animal management, etc) and I loved those classes, but I was wondering how you wanted to know veterinary was for you? Hi! Thanks so much for watching this video. I've wanted to be a vet for as long as I can remember but the one thing that was really key in figuring out if this was something I wanted to do long term was volunteering/shadowing veterinarians! I think it's so important for people to go out and experience the profession to see if it's something they can picture themselves doing for 20+ years! So working/volunteering in different areas of vet met is something I would really recommend! Hopefully that helps and best of luck with your schooling!!

Hi Amanda, I hope you’re still answering questions. I just have a question regarding the admission requirements for the OVC. For the academic prerequisite courses, I noticed that it says that we must have a 2 semester courses or 1 full year course (1 credit) for Humanities or Social Sciences. Is it possible to have 0.5 credits (1 class) from Humanities and 0.5 credits (1 class) from Social Sciences? Or do we have to have that 1 credit from either Humanities OR Social Sciences independently? I would much appreciate the help!

Hi!! Sorry for the late reply!! From my understanding (when I applied) you could have 0.5 credits from humanities and 0.5 credits from Social science as long as you had a total of 1 credit in those categories!! Hope that helps, if you have any other questions don't hesitate to reach out!!!

Do you think graduate and undergraduate cohort have different average to get in? I personally think it is harder to get high average with 3rd and 4th year courses compared to the first year courses.

I only have experience applying through the undergraduate cohort so I’m not too sure what the difference in averages is! And this is just based on my own personal experience, my first and second year grades were much lower than my 3rd and 4th year ones, but it will vary depending on which courses people choose to take for sure!!

Hi Amanda! I'm an American Pre-Vet student looking into applying to OVC, and I was wondering when these Pre-Requisite courses need to be done in reference to your intended starting date. Most of the schools in America only require your Pre-Requisite courses to be done by the summer directly before you begin school there, but it seems like OVC wants them all done by the time you submit your application. Yes, you're right about OVC, you need to have to courses completed by the time you submit your application. So if you're submitting your app in Feb of 2022 then the only courses you can use as prerequisites are courses from Fall semester of 2021 and earlier! Hi! It depends on where you go to school - in North America students have to take courses (the ones in mentioned) in an undergraduate degree! Most schools allow you to apply to vet school in your third/fourth year of undergrad! So after high school it will be 3-4 years of school before a 4 year veterinary program! Hope that helps! Hi!! So in North America, you need to take an undergrad degree (seperate from veterinary medicine) before you can apply to vet school! So I did my undergrad in Animal Biology and graduated with a Bachelors of science in Animal Biology and then I applied to vet school! You'll have to check the requirements for your country but I'm pretty sure the University of Queensland had a 5 year vet program so you don't need to do a seperate undergrad before applying! So each university will have different requirements to apply! Hope that helps!

Hey Amanda! Im a student at the University of Florida in my sophomore year I am planning on applying to at least 5 vet schools but the ones im interested in have different pre-reqs and some of these pre-reqs are just not available for me. Im already taking 4 semesters at a local community college to fulfill orgo and physics but i can't attend any animal nutrition (NCSU req) or anatomy and physiology courses (CSU req). If i don't take these courses will i automatically be denied by the college or should some other upper level bio classes help? Im already taking genetics of domestic animals, animals in human history (how we evolved and came to domestication etc), and intro to animal sciences, and canine + feline genetics (basically all the animal science courses my university offers).

Hi! I'm not sure how it works for American schools but for my vet school in Canada if you don't have the appropriate pre-req courses your application won't be looked at unfortunately!

hi! i’m currently a sophomore in highschool but i’ve been doing a lot of research on uni of guelph and requirements because i’m hoping after i finish gr 11 i can get early acceptance. For vet school, do i have to do my pre vet at a university or can i just do a 2 year degree in biology in college. Would they prefer students that went to universities then students that went to college? also what classes did you need to take in your senior year of highschool to get into pre vet?

Hi! To apply to vet school you need to submit courses that are from a university undergraduate program! So unfortunately you cannot apply with college courses. In senior year of high school I took all three sciences, English, calculus and advanced functions! Those were the courses I need for animal biology at the university of Guelph! Other undergrad programs may have different requirements!

if you don't get your desired grade or fail a pre req can you retake the course? Btw love ur vids

You definitely don't need to take these classes specifically! But if you are applying to ovc you will need to take classes that fulfil the pre-requisite requirements! Other vet schools may have other requirements for application that are different from the ones mentioned in this video! Hope that helps 😊

Hello Amanda, I hope you are doing well! I'm currently a fourth-year biology student in the Philippines and I intend to apply to the veterinary medicine program as I aspire to become a veterinarian like you. However, my family is planning to migrate to Canada, and based on the requirements of veterinary admission to OVC, I do not have enough hours for the veterinarian or clinical experience. I am wondering if I can apply to a veterinary technician program in Ridgtown campus for two years then work in a vet clinic to obtain hours of experience then apply to OVC eventually? If so, will my grades from my pre-requisite courses still be valid? Assuming I apply after four years after finishing my undergrad. I am truly grateful for your amazing channel and I would appreciate your answer.

Is bvsc and bvms the same and if I choose bvsc can I do surgery just like bvms ? Hi! I think it depends on where you are planning to go to school? I'm not familiar with either degree as we get a DVM in Canada. In Canada we have to take an undergrad degree (prevet) and then a 4 year degree for vet school! I had all of my requirements done after first semester in third year! But some of these courses I took in my fourth year since I didn’t get in on my first attempt! Hope that helps 🙂

However I joined the live story on Instagram (I think it was the UofG admission) and they told me I should finish a bachelors degree (4-5 years) first (and also meet the prerequisites) before I could apply to the veterinary medicine course.

Can one get into the OVC DVM program with an undergrad from a different university? (assuming you've checked off all 8 prerequisites)

I want to apply to a school in USA like Virginia tech,but after doing my research,the school request for a prerequisite course and I was confused. I kept wondering where can I get this prerequisites courses because am not from USA and there is no pre vet school in my country. Right now I am in my second year of study,I am studying zoology in my university. I was just wondering if this prerequisites courses are course that should be among the course that are taught in my program. I am in my second year,first semester,the course take 4 years to complete and when I am done I will be graduating with a BSc in zoology. After my research About Virginia tech,the school asked for a BSc in any major and also request for the following prerequisites courses: General Biology: 2 semesters with labs. ...( Biology was taught in my first year for two semesters,it is also taught in my second year along with genetics, the course code in my second year first semester are bio 201,bio 251 and bio 201. Bio 251 is called genetics, biology will always be taught through out my years till my final year which it my 4th year) Organic Chemistry: 1 semester with lab. ...( This course was taught in my first year for two semesters and also in my second year for two semesters. But I think it will also be taught in my third year) Physics: 2 semesters with labs. ...( Physics are only taught in my first year for two semesters,the course code is Phy 101 for first semester and phy 102 for second semester) Biochemistry: 1 semester. ...( This course code is called BCH and it is taught in my second year first semester) English: 2 semesters. .( English was taught in my first year for 2 semester, like maths and humanities/ social science,they are taught only in my first year) Math: 2 semesters. ...(like English was taught in my first year for 2 semester) Humanities/Social Science: 2 semesters. .( This one like maths and English are taught in first year for two semesters) Medical Terminology: 1 semester.( I don't know more about this ). The courses you're taking in your program seem like they would work for prerequisite courses on your vet school application! To be sure that you can use those courses I would email the admission committees for the vet schools you're interested in to double check! Good luck!

It depends on the vet school you're interested in applying to! I think a chemistry degree would be okay but you'll have to check the requirements for the school you're interested in!
