HOW I GOT INTO VET SCHOOL: Marks + Experience!

How I got into vet school! Before I applied I was always curious about what other people put on their vet school application and what experience they had. Now that I've gone through the process I thought I would share my veterinary and animal experience as well as my marks from high school to undergrad! Remember, there's no formula to get into vet school and what works for one person may not work for someone else. Always do what you feel like will make you most successful in your application! As always, if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

    Hey Amanda! I’m finally crunching down on binging your videos. You’ve inspired me to consider OVC. It definitely helps being in Ontario and there are grants available now to stay in Ontario LOL. Your video before this one definitely helped. As an older person who has no friends and family who have even done anything beyond a bachelor’s in engineering 🙄 (just the two distant cousins) were absolutely no help. Being the trailblazer and breaker of cycles is not easy. So like I tell my RVT classmates, look for resources; we have a collection of the world’s knowledge at our fingertips… use it! With that said. Thank you for being a resource that is SO relevant. I’ll probably have more questions for you later, but right now I’m absorbing. I have horrible studying habits that I need to improve upon. My first semester just ended and while I finished with a 3.6 GPA and have loads of experience, I know I have a lot of room for improvement.

    I did my first internship/shadowing experience about 2 years ago, and the first day they decided to put me in the OR. I also happen to be Jewish, and that day happened to also be a fast day. I'm sure you can tell where this is going. My first ever spay I fainted right when the DVM made the final cut to excise the uterus. Luckily she was a family friend and it was fine. She said I was extremely professional in the way I handled fainting! Pro tip: if you feel faint, don't make a big deal about it. There is a patient opened up on the table and they probably can't come to help you anyway. Just tell them you're feeling faint, lean against the wall, and sit. You won't be sterile but at least you won't fall on the patient or in sharps! She said I had good empathy and I would do well. I have never fainted watching/assisting a surgery since, and I'm working as an assistant now-- so don't give up if you do faint the first time. My favorite place to work is in the OR!

    I love stories like this! I think it’s important for anyone going into the field to remember it’s not always going to be picture perfect. I worked with a vet who didn’t do surgery because she fainted every single time! She works for the government and loves her job. There’s many different avenues in vet med and it’s so important to remember that. I’m glad you didn’t let your first experience deter you from something you now enjoy so much!

    Me too! My first day job shadowing at a rural clinic the vet told me the first thing on the agenda was repairing hernias on pigs. I grew up in Chicago and had zero food animal experience I envisioned piggies on a surgery table . Nope it was a parking lot procedure with the farmer holding the pigs by their hind legs while the vet did the surgery and the pig squealed bloody murder. The first pig had a small hernia the second was much bigger and I found myself putting the dr’s kit on the hood of his truck and slipping into oblivion. The vet was a super nice guy and made sure after that made sure he explained what was going to happen. I still hate to see any animal in pain but I’ve never again fainted. It’s been 31 years since I graduated and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Waiting now for my daughter to find out the result of her vet school applications.

    Thanks so much for watching!! It will depend on the school you're looking to apply to. Some schools require you to to have a bachelors degree (or at least a couple years completed) to apply. At my school, a Vet Tech degree is considered an Associate Diploma so you would need to do additional schooling on top of that degree to apply! If you're unsure, I would email the vet school you're interested in and they will be able to give you more advice tailored to their program specifically! Hope that helps 😊

    A new subscriber here! ✨Really love your videos and looking forward for more!! I’m a first year college student now and I have no vet experiences... I asked a few places this year but mainly because of COVID-19, places are not accepting students to go volunteer and shadowing. I’m really stressed out because I know it’s late to start my vet experience in college but in high school I was not sure what career I want to pursue. Do you have any tips on asking for shadowing and experiences? And is it really that late to start my experiences in my second year of college?

  • @yourvetamanda

    @yourvetamanda

    3 жыл бұрын

    In terms of volunteer and work experience I think it's important to check the requirements from the vet school you're planning on applying to! At OVC there was no minimum requirement for volunteer hours that we needed to apply! So if the schools you're looking at are similar, I don't think it's too late to start your experiences. I found volunteering to be more about figuring out what path I wanted to take in veterinary medicine or to see if it was actually a career I liked, so depending on your school, try not to focus too much on the number of hours you have but the quality of experience you're getting! Volunteering at clinics may be hard for the next little bit so I would try and get some experience at your school. I worked for a summer under a professor doing research on swine and it was some of the most valuable animal experience I gained!

    Hi Amanda. Thank you for this video. It was very informative and helpful. My daughter, who will be in 10th grade this next year, is trying to figure out what sciences to take in high school to help best prepare her for vet school. She took Biology last year and plans to take Chemistry in 11th grade and possibly Physics on 12th grade. What science would you recommend for 10th grade? She was considering a Zoology or Animal Science class. Also, in your video you said it doesn’t really matter what you take in high school when it comes to applying to vet school. So in that case, does she still need to push hard sciences? Just trying to figure out how much she needs to push harder sciences now, since we know they will be coming in the future at college! Thank you so much! Anne

  • @yourvetamanda

    @yourvetamanda

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey! Thanks so much for watching!! The courses you take/what you get in them doesn't directly impact your vet school application, however, the courses she takes in high school will impact which undergraduate programs she can apply to! If she's looking at Zoology or Animal Science they will most likely require biology and chemistry in high school in order to apply (If she has a school in mind, I would recommend checking out the university's website to see which courses she needs to take in high school). For my undergraduate program, I had to take Biology and Chemistry for sure, and then they recommended taking physics, which I also did! Each program will have slightly different requirements, but in general, if she's applying to a science based undergrad, they will most likely require her to take the sciences in high school to prepare! Hope that helps, and tell her I say good luck!!

    Thanks for watching and subscribing!! I can only comment on what the process is like in Canada, but for us, universities only look at grade 11 and some grade 12 marks! So I wouldn't worry too much about your grade 9 and 10 marks. Take a look at what universities you'd be interested going to and get an idea of what their admission marks are (for me it was around an 80% for my undergrad) so that you can figure out a realistic goal to aim for this year! Also no vet school will look at your high school marks so don't worry about that either! You got this!!

    Hi! it's been my dream to go to OVC for a long time, but I'm in first year university and don't have much experience. I rode equestrian for 6 years and have lots of experience caring for horses and barn animals. I also have experience with beekeeping and dogsitting with all sizes of dogs (i know dogsitting isn't much) and have handled many kinds of animals. I volunteer twice a week at a vet clinic (i also have a job and am in university full time). I was wondering if you think this experience will be enough? obviously I am going to continue to volunteer throughout university, but is there anything else you would reccomend?

  • @yourvetamanda

    @yourvetamanda

    3 жыл бұрын

    I think you have a good variety of experience already! I had never worked with cows when I started at OVC so don't feel like you need experience with every species when you apply. You can always try to get experience in research or production to cover all your bases. Another thing I would recommend is getting involved in the university with things that have nothing to do with vet school! It's great to have extracurriculars on your application to show that you're a well rounded student. I think you have a pretty solid base already!

    I think it depends on the vet school you’re applying to! For OVC we didn’t have to have a physics pre-req to apply! I’d definitely look into it 😊

    How did you get in contact with animal clinics, zoos?

    I started volunteering with the veterinarian that looked after my family dog and then that led into a job opportunity at a clinic. All my other experience I got from applying for jobs. Hope that helps!

    You'll need to apply for an undergraduate degree program! You can see all the requirements on the ovc website! www.ovc.uoguelph.ca/recruitment/en/applyingtodvm/admissionrequirements.asp 😊

    @@shamshersinghkang9722 anatomy, physiology and histology are all courses you take in vet school that you can also take in undergrad. I didn't take them in undergrad, but I know people who did and they found it a lot easier in vet school so those could be some courses to take 😊

    Hi! Is it okay to use nursing as a pre-vet?

    I don’t think it would be an issue! As long as you have taken the appropriate pre-requisite courses needed to apply to vet school you should be good! I would email the schools your interested in as they might have different requirements when applying!
