I would recommend always adding a few drops of oil to any O-Ring you use, so you don't "Rope" the O-Rings when you install them. Nice video, well done and quite informative.

On my GTS300 insted of removing the hub bolt and dealing with custom funnels to prevent oil on the tire and rotor. I used a big syringe of 300cc and a 5mm plastic tube. Super easy and no mess 👍 With this method I was able to extract 225cc from the hub at first service. Same amount I replaced with new 80W-90 GL4 Oil.

Helpful video. I got my Vespa HPE super tech in Oct, 2022. I just completed the first service in local dealer side because of free charge. Seems the dealer's workman did not conduct the coolant check as it should be. Thanks to the video. I need to double check that. Thanks from China.

Great Vid!!! Picking up my new GTS300 on Tuesday, but I love to see how things work. I will let the dealer do the 600 (just so the can inspect initial break-in bolts and torques), after that I will do everything you covered myself. I'm use to German and US engineering, with fluid drains on the bottom which makes the process much easier.

Great vid. The first time I took my dipstick out at 14 miles it broke off! Its a long story but I bought an aftermarket better quality dip stick, I had to take it into the garage to get the broken peice out and I had a sump fitted with a sight glass. As is stated in this video, you are suposed to check the oil before every trip and the HPE is ruputed to use oil. I have now done 1900 miles and I haven't found this to be true but I don't hammer it even when touring. I have found however that the site glass is priceless as I can see every time before I ride what level the oil is. This is my third GTS and I have had big bikes but I love my GTS, it is so effective and versatile.

I see an oil pan with a sight glass in my future too. So far mine has not been using oil as far as I can tell. Like you I’ve heard other people say that they tend to use oil. I’ve also heard other people say that they broke the dipstick off trying to get it in or out. What a pain! Glad you got that all worked out and you are now enjoying the bike!

One other observation. At my age, I’m no longer enthralled laying on the concrete. I sold my motorcycle lift table swearing no more DIY maintenance. I need to remember that.

I did a little bit more rolling around on the floor than is generally necessary. If I wasn’t trying to film it and keep my head close to the microphone on the camera, I might have done things a little bit differently! 😂 But yes, rolling around on the garage floor gets less attractive with each passing year.

You're on a roll (not a cimminon or toot-tootsy roll either!!) Good angles and explanations. Chapter markers. Good editing. You gonna give Mitch a run for his money!!!! (FYI that how my son used to say cinnamon). The little platform scissor jacks are pretty good and compact for this job. Can get 'em off Amazon for about $80. I tried my motorcycle lift from Harbor Freight and it works, but the little scissor jack (recommended by Robot) is better for the scooter. I just got back from the local bike shop and purchased the same oil you did. Got my O-rings, but I'm gonna reuse the crush washer in the rear. Liked that drain funnel from the oil container...that's easy/practical. Thanks for the ideas. Good editing again!!!! P.S. Enjoy seeing you in the Scooter Tag!!!!!

Thank you! I’m not planning many more maintenance videos at this point, but I thought it might be useful to others to record my first service. That oil bottle funnel worked out pretty well for a hack on the fly. A real lift might spoil me too much! I’ve been enjoying the scooter tag. For anyone else reading this, there is a scooter tag forum thread on the adventure rider website. It’s like a photo scavenger hunt that a bunch of us are playing with scooters. Willa Jabir got me playing. Check it out.

Good video, I’m currently shopping, trying to make up my mind on which color I want. That orange is growing on me and would be appropriate as I live in Tennessee.

Good overview of dealing with the HPE's first service, DIY-style (even though I'm letting my dealer do the heavy lifting for the first few services). One *big* change I made was swapping out the oil pan to an aftermarket model, which is essentially the very same oil pan Piaggio makes, but with a sight-glass installed, which makes checking the oil level a LOT less of an ordeal. Worth its weight in gold, as far as I'm concerned.

I agree. That’s on my list for the next service. The combination of the small oil capacity and the dipstick placement makes a sight glass doubly valuable in my opinion! Obviously you need to be on flat ground, but do you find it easy to read?

Dine my 23 SS yesterday as well, no oil consumption during breakin at all. Get you one of the long skinny accordion type funnel and you can simply drop in in from the top with the pet carrier out. All that modifying a funnel stuff is silly. I drained on the side stand and rocked it over the same :) neat clean quick and easy. Loving it !!

Just a tip: If you want to re-use a copper crush washer, heat it up with a torch and let it cool down slow...It makes the copper soft and it will crush it bettter for a second use . Do not cool down in water fast because you do make it harder.

So interested to see the YT videos of flatgrind's GTS. At age 80 now, I reminisce over pictures my Vespa GS. It was top of the line when I bought it new in 1962, for $500. It made10.5 HP at 6500 RPM from 160 cc, and had a cruising speed of 65 mph. I had it for a summer before a dog ran under the front wheel, knocked me down, and my parents took it away and gave me a car.

@@flatgrindrides The GS was my second Vespa, in college, after having a new 125 Vespa sold as a Sears Allstate Cruisaire in high school. I saved the photos of both. My next bike was not until 1966 in grad school. I bought a new BMW R27 250cc at the factory in Munich and rode airhead BMWs for the next 50 years.

Hello, great video, as always. I wanted to make a comment about changing the oil in your engine. Why don't you use a large syringe to which you attach a small rubber tube so that it can easily enter the loading hole? You could easily calculate the amount of oil to introduce into the engine and work less to fill the oil sump

Nice video, thanks! How do you keep the engine bay and bottom so clean? Mine, a 300GTS Super Sport in Blu Vivace will have the 1000km service at the dealer next week. They also need to change the legshield trim which was a little torn when new and replace the petrol gauge as it never worked! Curious in which state I’ll get it back.

Hello friend vespisti! I am the owner of a vespa gts 300 hpe like yours! Here in Europe we take our bikes to the authorized dealer to perform the scheduled maintenance at least for the warranty years otherwise we lose the warranty. Additionally, the dealer is going to fill in the online piaggio service warranty system after each service so if we want to sell the scooter in the future, the new owner will know for sure that all the scheduled services have been done. How come this is not the case in your country?? All the best!

The general rule here is that for a manufacturers warranty covering part defects or assembly defects on a new vehicle, as long as the work is done properly and in a timely manner using the correct parts it doesn’t matter who does the work. Just a different set of rules I suppose. There are people here who would have to drive 600 to 700 km just to get to the closest authorized service center! Generally speaking, the rules here prohibit the manufacturer from adding warranty terms that require future purchases from them or their affiliates. For example your car has a 30,000 mile warranty but only if you have your service done here and buy parts from us. motorcycleridernews.com/archives/4211. I’m not particularly concerned about the warranty issue but as long as the work is done properly and documented it should be OK.

Great Video! I am afraid that the hub oil chance may be too difficult to some engineers of the Vespa dealers? I wander why Vespa has designed that so!

Hi again, I've been watching your first service with interest since it's only recently that I carried out the same on my scooter. Even though mine is 5 years old it only had 114 miles on it when nI purchased it. The warranty wasn't an issue for me because of it's age so doing my own service a no brainer and I enjoy doing the work. Have you decided to sacrifice the warranty in order to produce videos? Thank you. That’s a good point. The dipstick marks can be confusing too! Here in the states as long as the work is done on a timely basis and with the correct materials the warranty should not be an issue. There’s no requirement to have a factory service center perform the work.

I'm doing the same thing this weekend. Just passed the 600 mile mark.

@@flatgrindrides Finished mine this weekend I'm really glad you had mentioned the coolant because mine was almost bone dry. I also noticed my hub casing is the same which makes me believe it's probably how the mould is. Also, you can buy 150ml syringes on Amazon for like $6 which makes it really easy to add the gear oil.

@@TylerAldrich The syringe is a good idea. I’m surprised that your hub casing was the same. When I picked mine up from the dealer, I noticed it and asked him. They looked at another one they had in the shop and it did not have that flaw so we figured it was just a one-off. I guess it’s more common than that, but it’s purely aesthetic. I’m not worried about it causing any issues. Glad you’re all topped off and ready to roll! Enjoy!

do you drive your vespa as your daily vehicle? i’m having car problems and storage aside, i’m really interested in committing to a vespa for my daily for 40mi commute (round trip) to work + errand runs!

Right now, yes, the Vespa and my motorcycle are my main rides. I work from home so no daily commute, just runs to the grocery store and such. It works great for me and my situation, but can’t say for you. Something you’ll have to figure out based on your needs. Good luck!

Man I just got an HPE and I’m really weirded out by the headlight during night riding. How has you experience been? Just a lot of shadows in the light beam for me.

So synthetic oil right away is okay? It used to be a motor needed broken in well before switching to synth.... times change I know, so I guess Im asking are you sure this is good as to new thinking?

This is a subject of great debate. I am nothing close to an expert. If you want to explore this issue, I would suggest searching an online forum like Bob is the oil guy: bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/conventional-or-synthetic-for-break-in.357339/ I did what I did, and I am not making an argument, one way or another. I could see how one might want to use a break-in oil for a longer interval. I also wouldn’t be surprised if I had taken it to my dealer they would’ve used whatever standard synthetic they’re using for their normal fills! For me, I was comfortable being conscientious about varying the RPMs, and engine load in that first 600 miles or so, and then going straight to a high-quality synthetic oil that meets the specs. YMMV.

No, the first service is scheduled at 1000 km which is just over 600 miles. After the first service, the service interval is every 10,000 km.

Doesn’t doing this service (or any scheduled service) yourself void the warranty? I’m like you in having little faith in dealers doing a proper job and would much rather do it myself. I’m in Australia if that makes any difference. Thanks for the video btw.

I can’t answer that. Here in the US they cannot require you can do the work yourself but you must document that all of the correct work was done with the correct materials. consumer.ftc.gov/articles/auto-warranties-service-contracts#Important

Yeah, I talk about that in a different video but in this video I decided to stick with the manufacturers specifications. I didn’t want to confuse people and have them putting oil in that might void their warranty.

Very professionally done but that’s not a flaw in the casting by the hub oil dipstick. I don’t know the correct terminology but the belt cover had a tab as part of the original cast to aid in removing it from the sand after the cast and what you’re seeing is the remnants of that tab which was snapped off after the cover was removed from the mold. All new GTS’s look like yours in that spot.

Interesting, this is good to know, thank you. I assumed it was a flaw because when I asked my dealer he said the other bikes did not have the rough area where the tab is broken off. He didn't have another bike on the floor, so I didn't have anything to compare it to, I just went on what he said. It is not a big deal, but it does seem weird to have a rough spot like that on a bike that has such a "design" focus. It feels like a flaw or a missed detail.

@@flatgrindrides, I agree that 10 seconds spent at the factory with a grinder would make that area look nicer. My '22 GTS has the same imperfection which is why I asked my dealer about it. He had a couple GTS's in stock at the time and they were all that way.

Hello, on my Vespa 300 gts 2018, my rear brake lever hardened to the maximum, official service tells me that it is the ABS Module, here in Argentina it is not available (Argentina it is what it is), where can I get it online? I wanted to get acquainted with the bike, and honestly I don't have a lot of trust in the dealer service departments. When I picked up the bike from the dealer the traction control had not been calibrated, the warning light was on and the coolant was a little low. That kind of attention to detail bothers me. I guess you could say that I sleep better at night knowing that things have been done the way I expect. That said, I may have the shop do one of the upcoming service intervals, put it on the scanner, etc.

@@flatgrindrides the same thing with me. I only go to the shop because waranty. I don't have trust with them since they skip some crucial things last time, and many of them didn't read the maintenance schedual at all... I live in Europe.

I'm pretty sure when checking the oil you don't screw it back in , you unscrew wipe and dont screw it in to check , that's probably why you think the factory has put to much oil in !

I’ve bought things at various places, but if you are here in the USA, you might consider ordering from Scooter West. I’m not affiliated with them in any way, but they put out a lot of good Vespa content so it might be nice to support them.

Back front should took drain plug out before removing filter very weird 😮

It's important that oil meets JASO MA2 standard, because it defines characteristics which are very important for catalyst converter and its function. If you are not planing to keep stock exhaust it's ok, but with wrong oil, catalyst convertor will not last long.

This is an interesting point. I was thinking that they should’ve specified MB oil because there is not a wet clutch and MB would likely provide better wear performance and efficiency, but I didn’t think about emissions and catalytic converters.

If the additives in JASO MA oils will damage the catalytic converter, I wonder why they specify it in the manual? My manual lists both MA and MA2. Oil specifications can be so confusing. I’m guessing most people pay no attention to them at all!

It says to inspect the “safety blocks” on the first service. What are they?

The “safety fasteners “ - all the key fasteners on the bike that if loose could present an immediate danger. Suspension, steering, brakes, etc.

The only check I did on the brake fluid was looking at it through the indicator windows to check the level. I’ve owned the bike for just under one month, so I’m not concerned about contamination or break down over time. I also did a visual inspection of the rotors and brake pads and of course I know how they operate from a month of riding.

@@flatgrindrides It’s not even to save the money but I think I trust myself to do the fluid changes more then the Vespa tech at my local dealer. Not to say he would mess it up just they get paid to get it done fast. I’ve done my own oil changes on a pre hpe gts and it’s practically the same. Only issue I ever had was I over tightened the oil filter and was leaking.

@@Pete_or_Peter4Long I hear you. When you read the online forums for motorcycles, cars, scooters etc. it seems that there are plenty of dealer service horror stories. I suspect a lot of people sleep better knowing that work they did themselves was done right. That said, there are plenty of dealers doing a good job with service too. I would rather ride than wrench, but I also want to have a reasonable sense of the condition of my bike and be satisfied that maintenance is being done properly.

About 40 years ago I had an oil filter gasket stick to the bike and didn't look at it, I just installed the new filter. 10 miles down the road it started to drip. I felt really dumb once I took off the new filter and saw 2 gaskets.

Did you see me tilt the bike in the opposite direction to drain it? That got more oil out than would have come out on the stand, level. As I say in the video, it took a total of 1.25L to refill to the “full” mark on the dipstick. The manual say the capacity is 1.3L, that would mean I there was 0.05L left in the engine. If you find this unsatisfactory, what do you recommend that might be better?

I have gloves. I wear them when I want to. I don’t wear them when I’m using a camera. It’s easier to clean my hands than it is to put on and take off gloves continuously while operating a camera. But you enjoy your gloves. I hope Santa brings you some more ! 😂

If the manual says 1.3L it's mean 1300ml. So, you put 1L and 100ml so you short 200ml that's why on your deep stick the oil mark is low.
