Veryan: Mysterious Thatched Round Houses, Cornwall's Best-Kept Secret!

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Cornwall, Veryan exudes timeless charm and a distinctively tranquil ambiance that beckons visitors seeking an authentic English village experience. This hidden gem is known for its unique round houses, a captivating architectural marvel, Veryan Cornwall presents a blend of history, tradition, and natural beauty.
The village's distinctive round houses, constructed in the early 19th century by a local eccentric, add a whimsical touch to the countryside. These thatched cottages, five in total, each boasting a conical roof and a quirky charm have become a symbol of the village.
The story behind their construction varies, with one legend suggesting that Jeremiah Trist, a sea captain, wanted to eliminate corners to prevent the devil from hiding. Regardless of the folklore, the round houses have become synonymous with Veryan Cornwall, attracting curious visitors and photographers alike.

Thank you for showing this. I've never been to England. But from what I've seen from videos and English tv, I am enchanted by these villages. I've fallen in love with the country side. Thanks again from across the water.

We thought so too. The church yard contains the longest grave in the UK. The grave contains the bodies of 15 sailors who died. On the night of 1st February 1914 the Hera, a German cargo ship on her way to Falmouth was shipwrecked. They were buried head to foot beside a boundary hedge. The grave is roughly 30 metres long (98 feet) making it the longest in the UK. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video.

There are two round houses at each end of the villages - they were to stop evil entering the village. They were built by the vicar of Veryan, Jeremiah Trist. They were made round so there are no corners for the devil to hide in. Thanks for watching Carl.

@thewayfarerswalk I would love to visit Cornwall. When I was at high school in the 1970s I had a British school friend. His family came here to live from London . His father got a job at Auckland International Airport after working at Heathrow Airport. My friends name is Keith , and he would talk about trips his family would make on holiday to Cornwall.

on the island of islay off the west coast of scotland there is a medieval church at bowmore village which is circular, i asked the minister why and he told me so the devil can't hide in the corners,

Ah yes. Veryan's vicar and local land owner Jeremiah Trist had the round houses built at both entrances to the village. It was thought that the round shape would guard the village from evil as there were no corners in which the devil could hide! It's amazing that two ministers at opposite ends of the country thought the same thing. Thank you for watching Patrick and your comment is really interesting. Rob
