Very Stony Soil - Complete Lawn Renovation
This is a lawn renovation where the soil is extremely stony. I found hundreds of stones some of which were the size of my hand!
The customer wasn't after a bowling green, just to get some new grass growing where it was patchy (after he had a new fence installed), so I agreed to take on the job. I Also made him very aware that it could do with a few bags of topsoil for the various dips and shallow soil but he was fine.
So the process included removal of stones, a LOT of hand scarifying, especially around the many large roots above the ground.
Only after all of that could my normal renovation procedure begin!

I love a good yard renovation, it'll look really good in a few weeks of care
Good job, sir. I've been doing a lot of work on my backyard, mostly removing lots of rocks throughout and working on my compost. I'm going to mix 50/50 garden soil and compost that I've created from home scraps. Getting ready for hurricane season. John from Miami, Florida.

Just watched this again Shaun and TBH thought what a lot of hard work, well worth the work but to have to do that amount of work every day for a livings not easy, most would be exhausted after that and need a lot of time to recover yet you are just moving on from that onto another job perhaps the same day, well done.

Hi.. 4 to 6 weeks at minimum.. most weedkillers state 3 to 6 months so I'd hold off till maybe mid october if u can then apply weedkiller
Fantastic as always and fair play to you for taking on ‘not ideal’ lawns. Out of interest do you manage to do much more work (I.e more customers lawns) after doing this? I imagine this is at least half a days work
@LawnRight

Yeah its usually half a day, but when im filmingh it adds afew hours on - you wouldnt think it, but often runs to a full day when the camera is running - did one similar yesterday in 4 hours
Thanks for your videos. The compost you use is only for the lawn or for other things in the garden as well. Greetings Tobias From Sweden 12:40

Thanks for the video! If you use a fleece to cover the seed, do you need to use compost top dressing too? Also you used hand seeding. Is a drop spreader better if you have one even for small areas?
@LawnRight

This is one of those things that the more steps you do the better the results... fleece will stop heavy rain winds an dbirds so might be agood idea but ive not tried it
Great job Shaun. Does it matter if I use different compost/ soil after overseeding as I have mixture of different bags available or is it best to use the same one

Feel free mate.. its just to cover the seeds. I've done it before
Hi, I’ve recently over seeded my lawn, scarified aerated and top dressed it and it’s starting to look good, how long should I leave it before cutting.
@LawnRight

Hi Peter typically it's about 3 to 4 weeks. Itll be ready.. just go steady when turning the mower and try not to cut too short
I've just done a deep scarification on a really mossy lawn. It's left significant bare spots that I covered with grass seed. Grass is starting to come through but there are a number of weeds (dandelions) coming up all over the garden, especially in the bare spots. I couldn't afford to topdress the seed which might have suppressed the weeds but I did rake and press them in. Is there a product I can put on the lawn to surpress the weeds or is it a waiting game?

Need a link to decent leaf grabbers! Do you never find the top dressing and seed sticks to your boots and takes the seed away from some areas?

I moved into my new built house here in Ohio about 5 months ago, they seeded the back yard but its still pretty patchy. The soil is clay and is very rocky. I've pulled up most of the visible big rocks but, there are still tiny gravel like rocks all throughout the yard. My yard is about 3200sq ft so a lot bigger than the one in the video. Im not really sure how to go about removing these small rocks because I really want to seed soon. I've tried using a metal rake but the clay is so tough even the tiny rocks really dont budge. Any thoughts?

Ooh... not good.. maybe run a scarifier over and aerate to create a good seed bed and cover with a thin layer of compost, gypsum and apply humic acid regularly
Any reason for the bannerman over the landzie on this one haven't seen it for a while

I decided to do my renovation in the Autumn (actually late summer in the North) and am concentrating on overseeing bare patches in the spring (or is it late Winter here) I had some ants where the lawn meets the path but after spraying with garlic solution a week back they seem to have gone. Going to apply this again in May and Sept to try and prevent insects laying eggs that develop into root-eating grubs. I’ve not been using a fertilizer when I overseed the patches. Should I do that after germination or not bother.
@LawnRight
Жыл бұрын
Hi you dont need to fertilise just keep the seeds damp as much as possible.. that's great feedback for the ants! Was it any particular product or just water and garlic granules
@davidplanet3919

@@LawnRight I just peeled and crushed one whole garlic bulb (from Asda), added to a saucepan with water to boil for 5 minutes, then left to cool and stew overnight in a bucket in my garage. Then strained through a cloth and diluted to 4 litres and sprayed on my lawn (approx 100 square metres). I did the whole lawn, not just where I saw the ants. The lawn did smell afterwards but that went away after a few hours.

@@LawnRight I think it will if I use it when the insects are laying their eggs. Thanks for the advice about not needing a pre-seed/high PK fertiliser.
You showed at the beginning a lot of different composts but decided to use the B&Q own brand!!!!! could you explain why you had Field No4 but didn't use it given you said the B&Q compost just clogs the spreader? Also not going to lie.... that lawn looked shocking and very hard work....how long did the front lawn take?

Hi.. field compost had a massive backlog so I couldn't get any more sohadtomakedo and just do my best for this one 😁.. think it was maybe 3 to 4 hours on the front
