I've just scarified my front garden of about 270 square metres, twice, with a cut before and in between, plus hand scarifying with the Wolf Garten scarifying rake any areas I couldn't get to with my electric scarifyer (Hyundai model ‎HYSC1800E). I raked up LOADS of thatch and moss (I don't think it's ever been done). I then over seeded, followed by 1,500 litres of Field No.4 Organic Fine Grade Lawn Dressing (excellent stuff), which covered approximately 200 square metres (I need to get some more to finish the job). I have to say, it was all REALLY hard work. Maybe it's just me, but I found it hard. All in all, I've spent around 20 hours on it (I may have been a little fussy, hence it took longer than it should have done), so I can appreciate how much effort you put into this work. Fingers crossed it will pay off in a few weeks time.

Great job. For small patches I have been covering the seed with a dusting of compost shaken through a garden riddle/sieve. I seeded a small patch in the shade of the house. All the seedlings have emerged “leaning over” in the same direction, about 30 degrees to vertical. Very strange but they do seem to point away from the wall and towards the brightest part of the sky.

Hi Shaun, what’s the difference between using top soil vs using compost after seeding the lawn? My lawn is completely dead so I’m starting from scratch. I’ve scarified already (and the lawn is basically just a big brown patch now as there’s virtually no grass) so I’m going to aerate, seed, and then I want to cover the seeds in something but I don’t know if I should go with soil or compost? I would be buying from my local Hilliers garden centre so if you could recommend any specific brand or type I should buy that would be amazing 😊

Spring or autumn really best suited as they have added moisture and better average temperatures for seeding

Looks like a little bit of work. What was the size of the front lawn, how much time did take and how much was the labour cost?

@@LawnRight Thank you for answering so quick. But how much is the labour cost? I know the estimate of this kind of job is relative.

Q: Should we scarify and aerate every year, or can that be done every other year.

Honestly as and when is the best answer. I have customers who never do any of them Their lawns are "ok" and acceptable and mostly weed free, all this stuff is for those who want something better. So anything is going to help, although the longer its left the worse it looks once done and it takes a fair while to recover.. ideally once or twice a year is great but some sweat it if not
