Vertical and Horizontal Stretches and Shrinks of Graphs
In this video you will learn how to stretch and shrink a graph both vertically and horizontally. To stretch or shrink a graph you have to multiply the original function by a number either outside of the original function or inside with the variable. If you multiply the function by a number inside with the x then you have a horizontal stretch or shrink. If that number is greater than 1, then it is a horizontal shrink and if the number is between 0 and 1 then it is a horizontal stretch. If you multiply the function by a number outside of the original function then you have a vertical stretch or shrink. If the number is greater than 1 then you have a vertical stretch, and if the number is between 0 and 1 then it is a vertical shrink.

Thank you for this, I thought vertical stretches would widen instead of thinning out, but this is counter intuitive because the x,y values increase. I’m gonna keep rewatching until it cements into my brain 🧠

You are welcome. Think about taking a rubber band and stretching it vertically. It will get skinnier.

Sorry just now seeing this question. They are basically the same. The only difference is if you want to talk about it horizontally or vertically.
