Carla Gugino is an underrated actress and deserves more flowers! She is for Mike Flannigan as Sarah Paulson is for Ryan Murphy! I need her in more, I need her is everything. It’s sad that Netflix dropped the ball with Flannigan that he had to go to another streaming service because he consistently served hits. Some are more popular than other but they are always well written and the world building is top notch.

@@Akshay-tq6zk I really enjoyed Midnight club. It was one of the few that wasn’t a one off in terms of storyline. I think it would have done much better with a second season order. A lot of stuff would have come together for character storylines and wrapping up mysteries. He actually released what his season 2 plans would have been on his tumblr.

Please never mention Mike Flanagan's name in the same sentence as Ryan Murphy's. They are on opposite ends of the horror storytelling spectrum. Flanagan is the best, Murphy is the worst.

Carla Gugino deserves all the awards for this role. She was absolutely ethereal. Also unpopulaar opinion but I find she's less like the devil and more like Death offering deals to people she finds intersting since Death was worse than the devil in Poe's works. Also AMAZING VIDEO!!

She’s Edgar Allen poe’s “Raven,” as others have pointed out. She is neither an Angel or a demon. Some people think she may be an Egyptian goddess or Morrigan, but I think it’s up to interpretation. Every culture has their own version of “the raven”. She’s not good or bad, but rather a natural force. Death comes for all. Just like death, some people see her as terrifying and bad, while others see her as a comforting yet intimidating old friend. Each death is a result of the family’s misdeeds. She never tricked or tempted the twins. They fully accepted her offer even though she was completely honest with the cost. They made a deal to change the course of their lives, and therefore they had to pay the price. In that regards, she’s like a karmic force. She never directly caused the deaths (other than Frederick with the nightshade… which it’s fredericks fault for being on drugs and it’s his family’s fault for using an unapproved paralytic agent… so even then it’s the Usher’s fault). Rather, she let each person set up their own demise, just like setting up a row of dominos, then she simply waved her had and then stepped backwards, knocking the dominos over themselves. Like I said, some people want to view her as evil. In reality, she shows us that it’s our greed and selfish decisions that are evil, and she is simply the consequence. People are greedy, they want and want. Each person in the show tried to justify their actions while it’s later revealed that deep down, their true motivations are self-serving. The monster is not Verna. It’s the ones who accepted the deal so they could “change the world”. And truth be told, if they hadn’t accepted the deal, the kids probably wouldn’t have become spoiled brats. They would’ve struggled yet they would’ve been people with strong characters, living better lives. Verna constantly refers to what each person COULD have been. The family’s true downfall was their immense wealth and privilege. They accepted the deal to change the world, claiming on the outside that they wanted to make it a better place with no pain. But their true motivations were corrupted and that was simply an altruistic excuse to pursue power and take selfish actions. They said that so long as they were serving the greater good, it didn’t matter what evil they committed. As a result, they made the world a worse place. It doesn’t matter what you have in life. Everyone has a story to justify their bad decisions. It never matters. In the end, you are always alone with your actions. In summary, Verna is death, karma, consequences, a force of nature, and revelations all rolled into one. That is the Raven.

Not the Devil! In cast quotes provided by Netflix, Gugino described Verna as "the executor of fate or the executor of karma." Importantly, Verna isn't an indiscriminate killer or monster who attacks people just for the fun of it. According to Gugino, Verna isn't the devil, and isn't even necessarily a villain at all.

I find this interpretation interesting. But a counter argument just for the sake of playing devils advocate would be the fact she gave them the ability to take those lives. The people that died due to their drug company would have never died if she didn’t give Madeleine and Roderick that power through the deal they made, and as she clearly seems to know the future, surely she would of known that millions of lives would of been lost through that deal? Yet, she still made it. Those million of lives taken are on her hands just as much as the Ushers. So if she is not inherently evil and is run by the ideals of karma and morality why make this deal? Unless she wanted to claim those lives just as she did the entire Usher family. Every death caused aside from maybe Rodericks boss, Father and Mother, seemed to have stemmed directly from that deal and therefor, from her. She brought about that death into the world. She knew exactly what would happen when that deal was made. So, is she really just trying to create karma? or was she an entity (either from hell or not) that fed on the death of the lives she claimed. Potentially, I believe it’s both. She took lives regardless, I believe it was more than just a deal, the death of others caused by her, sustained her. But then I also think she chose how she ended those lives based on what she deemed to be karma. This was just my interpretation of her character, but I find her to be immensely interesting and would love to hear more about other people’s opinions, either expanding or disagreeing with mine!

The Character of Verna fits quite well into the archetype of the "folk" Devil. which is much more complex, rich and nuanced than what modernity remembers of Him. He would tempt the wicked, to give them a chance of redemption. I mean, they never redeem in the end, and for that then He also punish them. For other people He is a liberator, a teacher and even a friend. (Also, the Devil is traditional asociated with black animals, like the Raven and the Cat, which both are connected to Verna in the show)

Su trato fue claro, sin letras pequeñas y sin trampas, les dió a los Usher lo que deseaban y solo regresó para cobrar la deuda. No conozco otro ser en ninguna religión o mitología que brinde ese sentido de trato justo.
