You’re right I had it all backwards. This is the 1998 match. No, wonder the outfits were all wrong! Lol! I was like, “why would they take artistic license on such a small thing like that? When we can just look up the match and see what they wore!” 🤷🏻‍♂️ As well as I didn’t see Sánchez Vicario taking a break here! Nor did she win??? They ended on 2 - 1 ??? I thought you had to win at tennis🎾 match by 2 !?

@@alexanderlopez7710 All the videos have been taken down. We can't have 2 African Americans as heroes and a white girl as a villain. That won't do. Martin Navratilova and Chris Evert said the toilet break didn't happen. Even though there are a million press articles of it at the time. When folks are prepared to lie even though there is irrefutable proof to the contrary you know this is something serious at stake. Chris Evert also said it was unnecessary to show the mugshot of Capriati even though the film hinged on the fact that Richard did not want his girls to enter the youth circuit with all the stress and temptations and wanted them to have as much of a childhood as possible and Capriati was the perfect example of why he was nervous about them entering the circuit. Capriati is white so it was unacceptable for Chris to have a white girl as a drug taker and poor role model and by contrast have Venus as an African American wholesome role model. Once you understand that you understand why they have chosen to lie despite the evidence. Racism is alive and kicking folks

@@keepitsports236 100% wrong. Arantxa had just won the French Open like 4 months before this match. She didn't start "declining" until 1999. Also Arantxa beat Venus in 2000 French Open. I think a better argument is not that Arantxa was in decline as much as the younger generation started to take over in a big way.

I don't think is cheat, I'm spanish and I know Venus absolutly dominate Arantxa in 1994 but Arantxa use a strategy using the same trick Venus use after, is strategy is part of the competition, if u can't follow the opponent rythm, force the opponent to follow yours.... For me is an absolutly no cheat.

The thing is that although in the film it was made up that Arabtxa used the break trick. That is just how Hollywood likes to tell the story. Don't trust everything dilms tell. You will end up with a distorted vision of history. But well nothing new for the USA, they have always told the story the way they want...

I don’t watch Tennis, but I watched King Richard. Is delaying the game on purpose still a thing? Did they fix it where the player gets disqualified for taking so long? Cause they should, you shouldn’t be able to get Chic-Fil-A & come back like she ain’t make the rest of us wait 30 minutes.

@@Mentosfreshnes What Vicario did is strategic. No doubt. Do anything you gotta do to win. But, that’s fault of the sport. That really shouldn’t be allowed to do. In basketball there is a penalty for delaying the game. As there should be. & this happens in basketball all the time, a team can have momentum. So then the other team calls a timeout and timeouts are only a minute long. But, at least there’s a time limit on it and amount of timeouts you have.

The H2H Results for Serena vs Arantxa: was 3-4 Arantxa beat the up and coming GOAT over all who was ranked higher. What that tells me is Arantxa possibly physically out gunned by Serena was a very smart player who could still win. I have always liked her, and felt they turned her unfairly into a villain in the movie.

This is not the match where Vicario left, that was in the 1994 Bank of the West Classic. This is in the 1998 US Open and yes, this can be seen as the revenge of Venus.

No she didn’t, she just broke her streak. That was the point. When a player is hot, you take the pause. Old tennis trick, A LOT of players have done. They shouldn’t have singled her out for it in the movie.

The toilet break did happen, it is wrong but it is not uncommon for players to use it as an underhand tactic to break a rampant opponents stride (including by Venus herself). Movies do need a villain and I do think it is unfair that Arantxa will now go down in movie history as that villain, given how widespread an issue well-timed toilet breaks are.

Not a bad match from Arantxa, taking a set off Venus. Though passed her prime, she actually played quite well in 98 with RG win as opposed to 97. Venus was still developing but already had all the shots. Some poor shot selection from Arantxa. When she could have hit the ball to the open court at the net, she hit it back to Venus. The wrong footing didn’t work. Overall I think she attacked when there were chances and played quite well here.

The problem for Sanchez was having to play an opponent that can hit the ball harder than nearly everyone else on the tour. Venus played a poor first set and still won this match going away. Sanchez was playing well enough to beat 97% of the other players in the tournament. Let's not forget she did win the French Open championship a few months earlier.

Clay is so different to a fast hard court though. The US Open courts were lightning quick in the 90s. Venus will nearly always beat Arantxa on a hard court.
