@@jamesyu5212 Davenport was a great player; an absolutely clean, pure striker of the ball, and an all-court player, but she lacked the movement and absolute tenaciousness and mental toughness of Venus and Serena. Before Venus, there were other tall women who played tennis, but none of them moved like her. They were generally slower, and unwieldy, like Davenport. Venus has the power that comes with being a bigger, taller athlete, but moves with the quickness and nimbleness of a smaller one. This was an unprecedented combination before her time, but is much more commonplace now. I would go even further to say that this phenomenon also translated into the men’s game, where more and more there are taller players who move well. Added to the Williams sisters’ power, movement and smarts was as I mentioned before, their mental toughness. Opponents know no matter the situation, they are always in for a fight with these two. This is why these woman reigned supreme for so long.

I was only 8 but I remember how huge a deal it was in the UK for Venus and Serena to meet in the semis at Wimbledon. My family and I were on holiday in Cornwall and out for lunch and I remember begging my parents to take me back to the hotel so I could watch it. I have been a huge fan of both sisters ever since and was lucky enough to see Venus defeat Lindsay in the 2005 final, one of the most exciting days of my life up to that point. I wish these women could go on forever.

Venus has always been my favourite of the 2 Sisters. In her prime Venus was simply the most exciting female tennis player to watch, with the speed of her movement, unbelievable court coverage, powerful serves and volleys. While Serena ended up being technically better and more consistent with her strokes, it is very hard to say when both play at their very best who would win. If not for the fact that Serena was around at the same time as Venus and of her illness over the years, Venus would have won around 12-15 grand slam titles. She is one of the very best female tennis players of all time, right up there with her sister, Steffi, Seles, Navratilova and Evert.

Venus and Serena are the greatest sports stories till date and perhaps ever

Venus is such a trailblazer and game changer. She, for my money, is the greatest mover the women’s game has ever seen-she was graceful, athletic, and seamless with her cross-court movement. I hate how the sports media of the last 10-12 years have pretended that her amazing career and accomplishments are basically non-existent. Serena isn’t the only all-time great player in the Williams clan. Vee came first, and has also fought for equal pay with such class and never-give-up spirit

Steffi Graf is the greatest mover the game has ever seen. As for Venus, she is not an all-time great. The only all-time greats are Wills, Court, Evert, Navratilova, Graf and Serena Williams. Venus is somewhere around the 13th best after the aforementioned ladies and others such as Billie Jean King, Lenglen, Connolly, Goolagong, Seles and Henin.

Yes… there’s incredible talent, focus and dedication. But it’s the self/belief that puts the chills down my spine. Even at such a young age, they knew it!!
