With animation, because it's extremely expensive, they often order 2 seasons upfront. That's what happened with this show. HBO didn't renew it. HBO had already contractual obligations for the 2nd season. It's the same reason why Amazon is still doing that dumpster-fire called "Rings of Power", even though it was the most expensive flop in TV history. They contracted for 5 seasons upfront. So before they can cancel it, they need a bunch of money losses and failures to deliver from the producers before they can allege breach of contract.

Considering the 1st "season" only ran 10 episodes this new "season" is more likely the 2nd half of season 1. Netflix does this all the time breaking a 20 or so episode order into "seasons" to make it seem like the show's more successful than it is. Mindy Kaling's contract was probably so rock solid that it was cheaper just release the rest of the show than face a costly lawsuit.

You know, I sadly saw the entirety of season 1 of Velma (more accurately: I watched someone else watch the entirety of season 1 of Velma) and I realized that most people don't bring up one thing about the ending in particular. This entire series main cast is a reverse harem. For those of you who don't know what it means, it isn't always as sexual as it sounds. In anime, a harem is usually a bunch of characters simping for another character and wanting to be their #1 partner. When it's a guy, like in Sword Art Online, it's just called a "harem" because that's what harems were originally and are traditionally. A bunch of women simping over one guy and wanting to be the girl in his arms at the end of the series. The "reverse harem" is exactly what it sounds like. It's when, instead of a guy, you have a girl in the center of it all and all the characters fall for her instead. (Look to anime like "Fruits Basket" for an example of this.) While those stories focus on the men fighting for the girl's attention, there are sometimes female admirers as well. Velma is basically that if you pumped the concept with aphrodisiacs and weed. Velma makes the idea of the "reverse harem" a much more sexual and toxic thing where, in anime, it's normally shown as "Hey, you have options and all these people like you." (Or maybe that's just the fact that I don't watch anime that focuses on sex.) Velma has options and all of them are as terrible as she is, if not worse. Daphne is toxic, Fred is a man-child who is basically the punching bag in which his family represents the conservatives, and Norville is the original simp for whatever reason and a throw rug that just lets people walk all over him. To be completely honest, I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled a Riverdale and just had the whole main cast in a polyamorous relationship by the time they decide to wrap up the show. That is my theory and, honestly, for how woke Hollywood is, how can anyone think otherwise? It's not what I would want, but it's an obvious direction I can see them and almost expect them to go in. So obvious that it slaps you in the face.

My guess is that they are legally obligated to make this second season because it was written in someone's contract. They probably won't have a massive budget for it and are hoping to quietly release it and forget it ever existed.

Not to mention (and this is my guess), that shows like this have a large batch of episodes made beforehand. And then have it split into 2 seasons. after all (from what I remember), a 2nd season was already announced before the 1st season finished. And I guess that these would be the remaining episodes that were already made? But after this. The show will probably/hopefully get the boot?

Lead times for animated series are really large. So if you don’t do any pre-production or production for season 2 until after season 1 ends, the delay before season 2 is 2-3 years. So they do both seasons at the same time when it comes to writing and voice acting (which are quite expensive) as well as some animation. So there’s huge sunk cost in season 2 before season 1 even ends.

No, that's not why they're releasing the episodes spread out. They're spreading out the episodes to effectively pull the bait and switch! Because they know once people are 5 to 6 episodes in, that most people are weak enough to compromise at that point. It's all a bait and switch play on people's lack of discipline and restraint. Smh. This is why we will never get a complete victory and run these monsters completely out of the entertainment industry!

Well Ms. Mediaholic the reason for a season 2 could be: 'Contractual Obligation'; W.B. nor HBO may not be able to legally get out showing 2 seasons of this show. Ms. Mindy probably insisted & got a clause that W.B. cannot cancel the show at any time during the 2 season contract. The studio & channel may have allowed this being Kaling's star status & figured they had a successful, unique & profitable show on their hands. Both were probably just as shocked & disappointed as the audience was. And W.B. tried to get out of the contract & cancel the show but were unable to. So HBO is doing what it can to mitigate a ratings failure. I don't think Kaling can ever 'brag' about this show.

The contract was signed under the Sarnoff WB administration. Likely the current management looked at the amount it cost for another season versus the legal issues around early termination of the contract and said that termination was potentially more costly than making another season. By the way, season 1 only cost a few million, so the profit margins are there for this...

most animated shows (even bad ones ) usually get a second series greenlit. So velma getting one is not surprising. It was probably being worked on either at the same time as series 1 or while series 1 was being released. Warner probably expected the first series to do well and greenlit it prematurely.
