So I worked on Velma and let me answer your questions! You're right - the studio almost always orders 2 seasons of animated stuff at once since that's cheapest, so Velma was going to get a second season no matter what. Then, we had 3 (YES THREE) art directors, and a host of in-house animators, which is why it looks so good. Unfortunately, the writers and head creatives (MK and team) were still the same so despite the massive re-writes we went through to try and mitigate the backlash, we still got.....this. Soooo much time in animatic reviews was put into "pumping up" the jokes. Let me tell you, it was a STRUGGLE to get through for me. The amazing production crew was the only reason I was able to bear it.

@@misanthropicservitorofmars2116 Work is work for production teams, they got a gig, best to see it through so you get your paycheck. Now if someone on staff takes to social media and attacks those criticizing the finished product, well you made yourself open season to be criticized yourself. Back on topic, I often feel bad for many of the production staff on these projects, and try not to lump them in with the writers or head producers usually pushing the agenda-driven BS that makes shows like Velma so awful. Not everyone working on these shows has a say in things, and they're just there to animated a scene, make sure the script revisions are handed out, and whatever other behind-the-scenes task is on their job listing.

@@XenoJehuty84 exactly what I try to do. Separate the workers from the creatives. I base my understanding of the industry on the Behind the Scenes content from The Lord of the Rings extended edition DVD special features. It’s so in depth, it’s like 10 hours of behind the scenes content. I’ve watched that since I was a teen. That’s where I learned how creatives and workers can work together towards a common goal. It also taught me why some things are bad. Because the creatives and workers don’t have the same motivations towards the project.

I will try my best to answer it. Ego and victimhood, they think they are the smartest most talented people out there, everything and everyone before is below them. Then there is the factor of crying that they are oppressed. These 2 things is to take old IPs and alter them to be better and inclusive yada yada. As for hoe they get away with this, the stufio executives dont even care of fathom with what is made, they only see numbers, and think that because what was made in the past was successful, they should remake them over and over because thats what numbers said worked. And think that because the loud “oppressed” like the twitter people make up the majority of people, they think putting them in charge will make them money, and cant fathom why its not working cus they dont have passion. I hope this helped summarize it

They are so self-absorbed that they can’t see anything greater or worth more attention and admiration than themselves and so the fact we don’t mindlessly applaud every IP simply because they have inserted themselves in it fills them with rage. These guys probably grew up watching the big screen with stars in their eyes about making their own mind-blowing and fantastic stories that audiences the world over would love them for and shower their creations with adulation from now until the end of time. One English degree later, they're stuck in a Hollywood writer room sweatshop working on Popular IP Sequel number 2300 because execs are terrified of anything original and their hopes and dreams of creating their own amazing work dies an inglorious death. So they take out that frustration on the show, either merely using the name to write the show they ACTUALLY wanted to write or shitting on the thing that supposedly stole their hopes and dreams from them.

You're absolutely right about context being the lynchpin for stupid jokes. I think if Velma's overall tone had been friendly, upbeat, and NOT actively crapping on anyone who isn't female, gay, or any race other than white, the stupid meta jokes might've come across as at least a little endearing, if not full-on funny. But yeah, you get what you give, and if the foundation of your show is anger and spite, that's exactly what the audience is going to give back. You'd think that would be fairly obvious, since the main function of humor is to make other people laugh and feel at ease, two things which really can't coincide with rage and frustration. Anyways, God bless you for suffering through this mess for our sakes. If nothing else, we're all learning a valuable lesson about what NOT to do when writing a comedy.

  • @Darth_Conans

I don't remember who it was, but some standup comic was talking about how you can be an "angry comic" and still be funny, but the anger part can never hit 50% or more - at that point you're just a guy on stage ranting at an audience who occasionally says something amusing. IIRC the example of a guy who tipped too far into the anger was Lewis Black - his popularity started to peter out because he got way more angry than funny, and audiences don't respond to that.

Yeah, it contributes to other characters thinking that Deadpool is nuts (to be fair, he is…) when he references them being in a comic. It works for him not only because it is a part of who he is, but also because it affects how other characters see him and react to him. Being meta like that is funny for him because it isn’t done just to seem oh-so clever, but to emphasize how randomly crazy he is to others around him. It’s the only way he can get away with doing it so much. Velma thinks it soooo clever, but doesn’t realize that meta humor has to be applied with precision in order to hit the mark and actually be funny. Otherwise, the jokes just take the reader or watcher out of the story for no reason other than to say “hey, see that? I’m clever-funny. Haha!” 🙄

"Why was this Greenlight when it Season 1 sucked." Simply, Contracts. Most Animation under WB get 2 seasons, look at most others and you'll see the same thing. So why wasn't it cancelled like, say Batgirl, well Batgirl got Tax Write Offs, which made it worth doing that, while I assume what ever Write of they could get for the show isn't worth what it would take to break the contract.

Shows like this are why so many people were saying things like "bring on the AI overlords" and "they want to be paid more for THIS?!" when the Hollywood Writer's strike was going on. Which isn't entirely fair- there are still some good writers working for entertainment, and plenty of others in the salt mines trying to make scripts like "Velma" into something that doesn't make teeth grind and ears bleed. But unless someone stops lousy misanthropes like Kaling from getting these vanity projects greenlit in the first place...

He had the capabilities of a dog with the intelligence of a human not to fuck things up badly like eating the evidence. He could probably sniff things out at least or dig things up.

Yes. RE: Deadpool concern, me too. Very much so. But this show is, in its awkward, stumbling, miserable way, mean to be a prequel to the Scooby Do show. So its showing how everything turned out that way: here's why he wears a crew neck! Here's why Velma wears glasses, on and on. But honestly... Family Guy seriously has a lot to answer for; this is what it leads to.

It is so funny to me that the ones writing and directing these “down with the rich, capitalism sucks!” stories are usually part of the clique they claim to dislike. It has such a “How do you do, fellow poor/comrade?” vibe to it all. Why can’t creators just create something that’s fun and brings joy to people? On what plane of exist do they occupy that they think taking a beloved family franchise, turning it into a mean spirited convoluted mess with unnecessary blood and sex jokes, and then insulting the people who rightfully call out their incompetence will make their ‘creation’ a success? Forgot the straw-man religious cope, THEY’RE the ones on something much, much, much stronger. Regarding Fred ‘joining’ the Church, I’m already wondering about several things cause I can’t help it. For one, has he gone through the Sacraments of initiation yet? Or at least has Baptism as a baseline? If not, he would have to take classes or have a discussion with the parish priest to get that ball rolling on becoming a member. He also wouldn’t be required to tithe (giving % of income) with most parishes as they operate more on a charity basis. If he’s not wanting to fully commit just yet (which some people do), then why is he wearing a priest collar? One doesn’t get to wear that until they complete their seminarian studies, which takes years on its own and to begin one must usually go through a long discernment process. And there’s no guarantee one can even get into seminary. If he’s into being a Catholic for a bit, why not go for a monk or friar look with the full robes and cords? Way more distinct and could probably be more humorous. Such as claiming he’s a Jedi monk and pulls out random weapons from his robes, wearing a bald cap, or something more amusing. Also, does he start carrying around stacks of prayer cards, Rosaries, holy water, medals, scapulars, mini statues, etc? Cause that is an issue with some Catholics thinking that the sacramentals themselves are ‘good luck’ charms, and gang members are known to wear scapulars and rosaries thinking it will keep them out of hell (side note: it doesn’t). Could have added on to the monk/friar gag where he pulls random things out of his robe all the time, and even he is shocked at what he finds sometimes. Just saying, there’s way cooler Catholic drip they could have gone for that’s more interesting than a black shirt and collar. Yeah, yeah I know the whole gag is meant to be ‘funny’ and all that, but a joke should at least have a proper set up. Also, Thomas Aquinas, Fr. Georges Lemaître, Nicolaus Copernicus, Fr. Johann Mendel, John Henry Newman, and quite a many others would like to show how silly “the Church doesn’t require me to think” mindset actually is.

Part of a good joke set up is knowing the subject matter. I remember a speaker saying he hung out with some nuns one afternoon, and quite a few times they would talk with someone and all of a sudden they would be passing around prayer cards to them to help with an issue they were having. Guy said it was something like “ninjas pulling out shurikens from their robes. Where did those cards even come from? Just gives it a sense of timelessness that one can’t always get with drones, tanks, etc. But then again, tanks are also cool 😂 All this of course when I am not likely at all to be conscripted or required to fight, so I won’t say yeah or nay to a crusade. 😅

Also most creators on KZread saw through the hate watch bs and “engagement” approach (*see Parrot Analytics).
