The stark difference between "Mr Birchum" and "King of the Hill", despite it being the same joke of "Old school conservative dad living in the changing modern day" is the fact that when Hank got upset about something, the joke was "Hank's upset by the changing times". In "Mr Bircham", the joke is "He's upset and you should be too and the thing he's upset about is wrong and should be mocked". Hank is old fashioned and resistant to the changing world and often times confused and frustrated, but rarely angry at it. Meanwhile conservative humor now is "Things that are different are bad and woke and should be made made fun of and hated specifically to own the libs"

Hank Hill works because he's someone we all know. An aging man confused by a changing world but he's never malicious he's just struggling but tries to learn and his heart is usually in the right place. He's someone you can understand. Mr. Birchum is just telling people to dig their heels in when they're angry and his heart isn't in the right place because it's inflamed from a mixture of a lard diet and morning scotch because he think it'll own the libs.

Hey! I'm one of the animators and fixers of the show! I thought i can maybe share a little bit of how we made some things about the animation, since you commented on it By the way, i heard some of the advertising saying that this show was proudly made in America, but we, the animation crew, were located in Valencia, Spain. We put some references here and there, like the poster on principal Bortles office that says visit Valencia The show was made using 2D cutout rigs mainly. For those who wonder what that means is that instead of having to draw every single frame we move a 2d model similar of how 3D animation is made. Shows like Rick and Morty also use this, but they have a lot more time and manpower to polish and refine and to make more complicated poses. In fairness, they kind of wanted the characters to look a bit stiff, and not cartoony, so that's the show style But we didn't have time to make rigs for everything, specially por the characters that appear for a gag, so those were hand drawn animated. We had to do it fast so the animation is on 3's or even 4's I personally didn't like the show, and seems to be the main opinion for the crew i talked to. Hard to be passionate about a show that oposes LGBT+ rights when most of the crew is LGBT I would say "hope you like it", but lets be honest, so I'll say thanks for you to endure it

Producers tend to push it, the usual thing of "if our show is like this one it'll be just as successful." Its why the moment Rick and Morty came out and got big, suddenly we got shows like Inside Job or that star trek one that went with the same style. There's also a kind of "industry standard" style that gets around based on the standards of what networks want at the time. Say 80s kids shows having a certain look so the toys were easy to make from one mould, 90s shows using traditional styles inspired by looney tunes/rubberhose etc cus of the "back to basics" ethos of the time. A lot of producers these days just go "family guy big, make it look that." I remember hearing one show with kind of a different look, can't remember the name, did it's pitch and pilot to look like family guy, but once it was picked up just changed the style to what the creators actually wanted to do.

(Velma comes to mind) Issue is alot of conservatives seem to scream out in horror that 'liberals are pushing their agenda' in instances where there is a story about a gay person or trans person, just the idea that there could be a story about a gay person (who exist in real life, what a shock) is somehow propaganda for their children. Thats what i mean by they are trying to combat propaganda with their own propaganda. I don't usually shit on animation, but I'm making an exception 'cause by holy jesus christ on toast SAME HAT. My eyes hurt from looking at the choppy, piss-poor animation. Whoever the animators were, I feel SO sorry for them. It's so obvious in how little care went into it that they couldn't even muster enough of a shit to give to make sure there were auto-tweens thru every key.

Also, one thing that makes the show even worse but is peak “conservative comedy” Birchum is hated by everyone. All the kids make fun of him, the staff and adults barley respect him (until they side with him from writer contrivance) He’s a jerk to everyone, and is really just a miserable person. And the show sells that as a good thing, and openly celebrates him being an irredeemable POS. Cause conservative comedy thinks being a genuine A-hole and or seen as a horrible person is a good thing, out of cope. To them, that’s the standard of conservative comedy, everything you say is true, all your comedy is just reality, therefore if you’re an a-hole and or hated for being a truth teller, that’s how you know you’re right.

King of The Hill was also more nunced in its politics. They humanized Conservatives and made fun of liberals but there were also episodes where they humanized the liberal view point. There was even an episode when peggy became freinds with a drag queen who was betrayed as a good person. Peggy was even called out for almost dumping the freindship because she was to judgmental after she found out. You can tell this show is never going to have an episode were liberals and progressives are going to be portrayed as anything but horrible, or stupid or both. They also still took shots at conservatives. Hanks dad, who was even further to the right then him, is betrayed as a miserable abusive tyrant. Hank didn't want to be anything like him and we even rooted for him over his father. Also Hank was a likable character. He had his flaws but he also had a good heart, cared about others and strong moral compass. You liked him for being more traditional and conservative. Birchum not so much.

They focus so much on ruffling feathers and pandering to their demographic that they forget to write decent material. No one is laughing at their jokes because they suck ass, not because their fee-fees were hurt. You know, maybe they have a point about “wokeness” ruining comedy, because now it’s the only thing they make jokes about

Yeah, South Park had an episode where they straight-up used the N-word repeatedly.

So, the first episode has the main character use his students as unpaid child labourers, but the writers expect us to side with him? Honestly though, the most offensive thing about this show is how bland it looks.

As much as they complain about minorities existing in media, they don't even have the balls to have an exclusively white, male cast... There are women in the show that even... do things... and have jobs of their own.... His wife is a real-estate agent who probably makes a hell of a lot more money than a wood-shop teacher (which is a no-no!) And his daughter wants to cut wood too! (Isn't that a man's job? Shouldn't her dream job be a wife and mother? ) I don't know.... this show is looking pretty "woke"....

What makes me pissed off to this very day is that back then people complained how Disney doesn’t have lgbt rep which this may sound controversial, you shouldn’t force people to have diversity in stories. So when Disney did listen by making Baymax the series and Strange World, people still got offended for the lgbt rep. It’s hypocritical and it shows you can’t satisfy the public. I will never understand why most adult animated shows have the most bland, generic, and basic character design ever, I wouldn't even call it basic, it's disgusting, can't wait for DailyWire + to fall off for good, first we had a Bluey ripoff, now we have a 4th Brickleberry clone. Beautiful. And it's depressing too because I know a lot of good adult shows with a very unique art style, Smiling Friends for example, but shows like this get overshadowed with stuff like Brickleberry or whatever, it's depressing.

Smiling Friends is genuinely creative and hilarious with unique situations in every episode. Invincible is a brutal, fun, and very emotional story about a guy wrestling with his father. This? This is just a Family Guy ripoff with even worse political commentary, but at least family guy had the balls to go all out for its bits, even if they didn’t always land.

smiling friends ended its first season with a main character being saved from the devil by god. THey won before this shit even crossed the starting line.

King of the Hill works because while the characters might be conservative, at the end of the day they aren't hateful conservatives. They aren't going out of their way to try and "own" anyone, and they push back against bullies on both sides. The characters in King of the Hill aren't judgmental towards others, they are just living their lives and reacting to outside forces that interfere with that. Probably the closest thing we get to an "anti-woke" episode in King of the Hill is the one where the guy wants to make a historically accurate depiction of the Alamo and takes it a bit too far, making Davy Crocket a coward that couldn't wait to surrender. Hank doesn't sit there and complain about pansy liberals (woke wasn't a term at the time), he gets upset because it goes against his Texan pride, but even though he hates it, he still accepts some of the hard lessons, then talks about why he still treasures the history and lets it proceed. We see the characters accept Dale's gay father, Bobby's love for theatre, Bill's need for companionship, Dale's crazy conspiracies, Nancy's unfaithfulness, and more. At the end of the day, King of the Hill works because the main message is to just be a kind and accepting person.

Imagine "King of the Hill". Now imagine everyone being insufferable and annoying. That's this show.

Mr. Birchum is literally just “what if Family Guy was right-wing?” in a nutshell.

The problem is that the Daily Wimps are rightwing millennials cosplaying as Boomers and don’t really know how it’s done. They’re like little kids who think it’s hilarious to quietly say naughty words like doodoo and fart when their mom isn’t around because she’s so strict. They’re all repressed dorks so any kind of rebellion feels cathartic, even though they can’t attack the people who keep them repressed, like their parents and religious leaders. But honestly, if a comedian started their set with “I like saying the n-word” that’d be pretty funny. They could go into other naughty words they like to say like doodoo and fart. That’d definitely be funnier than any of the “offensive” comedians today who talk about how they can’t tell jokes anymore instead of telling jokes.

I just love all the self-owning they did. They claimed that for decades, no one would go near the show due to apparently “offending the wrong people” 1. Saying that you signed off on a show nobody wanted for decades is not the own you think it is. 2. I thought the narrative they liked to push was that “snowflakes” were created in 2016 and before that it was anything goes? So if nobody was offended until the 2010s or so, why were the networks scared of offense? I will never get tired of seeing the Wire shoot themselves in the foot over and over again.

Watched first two episodes. There are three gay characters so far, one is Bircham's friend from the navy, the other two are friends of Birchum's rival and they are both from the army. But they all bond over beer at a bar where they celebrate veteran's day in the second episode. If anything, they showed better friendship between gay and straight people here than in Velma. The big joke is that Birchum asked the guy to prepare elastic pants for them because he is gay and the gay guy says that other guys are attractice. That's it. If it was supposed to be offensive, then they have failed miserably. I think that is why the nutjobs are mad about. The main character is friends with a gay guy, doesn't hate gays, and the gays are veterans and decent people. Like, even the gays in this show hate the social justice warrior guy

As a conservative, I used to follow Daily wire few years ago but I stopped when they had a fallout between Steven Crowder and found out what they were doing to Crowder. Realizing that they’re terrible people. Also, it really shows their polarized views on the Israel-Palestine issue where they are pro Israelis. Especially Ben Shapiro yapping about the issues demonizing Palestinians as a whole and thinking that Israel is a poor victim or something. It’s so bad that I’d rather watch or listen to Steven Crowder instead because he knows how to do comedy while commentating on global politics which is enjoyable imo. Daily Wire should’ve taken notes on him on making their content enjoyable but they clearly do not see their own flaws.

King of the Hill works so good because Hank Hill isn’t seen as Cartoon Jesus. Sometimes his beliefs are right and the episode shows why that is instead of just telling you FOLLOW MY BELIEFS and then sometimes Hank Hill is wrong, and the episode shows you why Hank is wrong. It shows a grey area to these sorts of issues in a proper way without shoving it in your face.

Im glad creators are now labeling shows as “anti woke” so i just automatically know what to avoid

7:20 There's a certain irony that these guys scream that others use media to force their opinions on people, yet the moment they make their own stuff as a rebuttal, they do that just with their own views. You kinda touched on this but also in KOTH it actually examines the views conservative people have fairly reasonably, like Hank isn't a cartoonishly evil dude - he's a good dad and a loving person, he's just stuck in his ways and struggles with change. Like there's a whole episode where his work gets a new manager who starts doing shitty things like raising prices in the winter and tracking the employees fuel use, which enrages Hank. Not because it inconveniences him but because he believes in the more traditional idea of running businesses by treating people with respect, which isn't something that modern companies like doing (arguably they never did but semantics). He's completely shown as in the right too, it's an examination of a topic and not a mouthpiece which is where shows like this fail

I think it really chronicles the fall of conservatism. Previously, it was something that could at least be respected- even if you didn’t see eye to eye vis-a-vis economic policy, you could still rest assured in the knowledge that your conservative neighbour/uncle/whatever would be a good guy who’d respect you. Nowadays? It’s the exact opposite. Conservatism has devolved into nothing but populist, whiny bullying. Always blindly looking for someone different to hurt and mock, always in a perpetual state of “everyone’s ruining civilisation” whenever, say, a trans person makes the news. And, of course, it’s all egged on by billionaire agitators and their mouthpieces. It’s not something that can be respected in its predominant form anymore, and the difference between the shows really encapsulates why.

Dailywire seems to have forgotten that the opposite of woke is asleep 😴

because they aren't actually aimed at adults (other than manchildren) they're aimed at the brand of edgy teenagers who stayed up way too late to watch Adult Swim and got an extreme shock-centric sense of humor. And in this case are also being groomed into conservative voters.

I think it's because kids shows need to be eye-catching, and work within their limitations. An adult show will just go for the concept directly with no interesting spin on it, causing it to be lackluster. e.g., a kids show may make a clever sex joke that works around the censors, while an adult show will just be blunt with it because it can be literal with said joke.

Maturity is about growth. Kids shows teach lessons. Adult cartoons lampoon lessons for (often cruel) indulgence. Compare the discussion of violence in Avatar: The Last Airbender to recent Family Guy Episodes. People die in both and in large amounts. But which one has a lesson?

I believe part of it is due to animation still being seen as "kid's media" and adults are ashamed to be seen as childish. So to compensate, they go all out on the blood, sex, and crudeness because obviously kids wouldn't be watching that, in theory. Also, these shows are usually watched by edgy middle school boys and the creators know that.

Why do people keep making media that is super political in any way? Isn't that just alienating people who disagree with your political opinions and thus cutting your potential audience in half? Both the right and the left are more than worthy of being made fun of, but we don't need entire tv shows dedicated to it.

It could alienate people. And that can be a good thing. If I make a game or movie and my main character or an important side character is some minority, I’m likely to alienate bigots. That means I have a better community, which attracts more people to it Also, whether or not you like it, politics is in almost every piece of media. Even games like Stardew Valley have politics. Media has always been political, and it will always be political, because media is often a reflection of what the people working on it think about the world. Media without politics ever is boring

@mobcrusher99 1. Media alienating extremists are inevitable and a good thing since extremists are a bad thing. But media that is too far in one direction will alienate moderates and centrists. Even if the moderate is on the same side, extremists are still insufferable and worrying. 2. I clearly said that media having political moments is fine. I just said nobody wants an entire tv filled largely with them no matter what their or the show's politics are. Entertainment is supposed to be a form of escapism, and if it's all politics with little actual substance, it fails at allowing people to escape reality. Nobody would like Stardew Vally if it didn't have the things people love about it and replaced it with a bunch of political jargon even if they completely agreed with the devs's politics.

Using art to express an opinion is fine. The trick is in incorporating the message you want to give into the themes of the actual story. If you use a character to just tell the audience what you want them to believe, a lot of people will probably see your work as being preachy. On the other hand, though, if you're too subtle with your allegory, you run the risk of being misinterpreted.

I don't like Hazbin Hotel, but I'll give the creators credit, they at least tried to be creative with the visuals and had ambition. This one is just a cheap glorified attempt to take potshots are liberals/ people of the left.

The only thing that makes this exist in my mind is Patrick Warburton being in it. It's also a good contrast on the claim "go woke, go broke", because this prooves again that bad writing has no political compass.
