VEGAN GINGER BEEF | Recipe by Mary's Test Kitchen
This vegan ginger beef recipe uses tender homemade beefy beefless seitan, coated in a crispy fried batter, and dressed with sweet ginger beef sauce. It's super delicious and just as good, or better than Chinese take-out ginger beef (AKA ginger fried beef or deep fried shredded beef in chili sauce).
Scroll down for the recipe link.
Ginger beef is a Chinese Canadian invention. According to Wikipedia, it was developed for the local palate in the 1970's by chef George Wong at the Silver Inn in Calgary, Alberta. It's made from strips of beef, battered in a mixture of egg and cornstarch and deep fried before being covered in a very sweet and somewhat tangy sauce. It's on practically every Chinese take-out menu here in Calgary, even the vegetarian Chinese restaurant menus. By popular request, I developed this vegan ginger beef recipe for anyone and everyone who craves the taste and crunch of ginger beef without the meat and eggs.

I tried this recipe and it is so so so good 😋. My meat eater husband said: "This is better than meat" 💥. I made a lot of saitan in my life with different recipes, but this one is the best: it is crispy, spicy, soft in the middle and not rubbery at all... perfect.
I have to thank you...You are the ONLY person I've seen that talks about that wheatie flavor in the VWG. Everyone else that cooks with it never mentions it and act as though they're good with it. And they may very well be. Me being a heavy meat eater, who loved meat so much, I didn't care if I didn't have sides to go with it, needed that taste to be gone or I was heading back to the butcher. Okay that was an overdramatic statement. Sorry. But I was tired of that taste of wheat. I had stumbled across your Channel a couple of months ago and heard you mention using apple cider vinegar to cut that aftertaste and I fell in love ever since LOL! So I'm thanking you for mentioning this as a solution. I'm not gluten intolerant so now I can eat as much as I want and make all these fabulous dishes and still love the taste.

You're most welcome! I noticed the same thing too. It led me to wonder if maybe there is a wheaty-tasting gene that some people have...like how some people say cilantro tastes like soap

That's a good theory! I always figured that the brand I bought was bad somehow...

I think you're onto something there. Science backs up the claim that some people are "super tasters", cilantro as you mentioned, as well as bell peppers and some other vegetables are usual culprits. I would not be surprised if wheat was included. I'm so glad you found a method that works to make your seitan palatable!!

Mary's Test Kitchen // Vegan Cooking I know right? My friend hates Cilantro. Well, you have helped me a lot. I was going to ask in another one of your video posts, would any kind of vinegar help, like the Balsamic, Malt, White, or even Red Wine Vinegar. So, I see Balsamic here, which answers that question 😊. I'm enjoying making your recipes. I have three KZreadrs I really follow close. I'm determined to stay meatless😊. Have a good day!

Yes, it’s so wheaty! The wheat taste takes me out of “hum meaty” into “nope bread”. I have noticed many people try to cover it with lots of spices but sometimes I really miss the comfort and nostalgia of roast beef with salt pepper and garlic.
Literally just made this! But with double freezed tofu instead of setain and coconut sugar instead of brown sugar. It is PERFECT! 💓 Thank you!

Thanks for doing all the hard work for us! Can't wait to try this.
This dish is simply perfect! I made it earlier this week, and I will make it again today! LOVED IT!
Mary, I recommend your channel to everybody. I've tried several of your recipes so far with excellent results. This one is my favorite to date, and your tip for adding either balsamic vinegar or apple cider vinegar to the seitan to cut the wheat flavor is brilliant. I do that now for every seitan recipe I make, and it works in every instance. Thank you very much for providing such wonderful, tasty content to your viewers. Even my kids, who weren't all that enthusiastic about transitioning to a plant-based diet, love all of your recipes I've made thus far.
Mary, I made this for a dinner party tonight. I followed your directions to the letter, and it was a hit--- to the letter! This is an incredible recipe----absolutely delicious. This is my favorite seitan recipe now. I also learned something by using flax meal for the batter---It was so light and crispy. Thank you!
I absolutely love your recipes!! Off the top of my head your juicy seitan beefless burgers are amazing👌 I'm excited to give this recipe a whirl this weekend. Thanks for making vegan food exciting Mary! x

I made this and this is the 💣 and it does keep the crunch when you reheat it in the microwave.
This dish is off the hook.😚😇 It turned out soooo Good!
I'm glad that the vegans on here have been giving ideas on how to veganize meat dishes, for example, Yovana Mendoza has made vegan beef patties out of black beans which are cheap here in Australia (80 cents per can). My local vegan restaurant (Vegan hut) offers a portobello mushroom burger for $12 AUD but I could stay at home & make the burgers that Yovana has made for less money. McDonalds doesn't have a Vegan option over here apart from if you order a coffee with soy milk added.
🤤 this looks soooo good!! I realized bulk barn sells wheat protein and I never noticed before. I think this shall be tried out this weekend! Thanks again for your amazingness Mary!

This is my first time viewing your videos but, I am very impressed by your cooking skills and well thought out recipe.👍 I look forward to many more.🌞 I always wanted to make seitan but, felt it was too intimidating. You put me at ease! 🌈TY this sounds like it can become my favorite recipe ever!💝 💥I'd love a vegan fried shrimp or a crab cake or stuffed clam or scallop. I can't find a crab or shrimp salad substitute which I used to love but, I ate an amazing crab corn soup at a vegan Chinese eatery so I know its possible to make a creamy vegan shrimp, crab or clam chowder. I'll search thru your videos to see if I find any of these. I'm sure hoping if not you'll film some new recipes with these popular flavors. Thanks Mary 💘

Looks amazing now I need to make this seitan with a Mongolian sauce. Been truly missing Mongolian Beed.

This would be perfect with Mongolian beef sauce too! The sauce itself is usually vegan anyway :-)
fantastic, will be doing this fa shizzle, the big thing I got from this is to steam the saiten others have wrapped and boiled, time consuming, Thanks.
This was delicious. I made the mistake and did not let the oil get hot enough. Some of the batter stuck and I had to pry the seiten pieces from the pan with a sparula, but once the oil heated up properly the rest of the batch was cake. Thank you so much!

whoops! I am so happy you figured it out! 🤗🤗🤗 now you hvae the POWER to make vegan ginger beef when you want. What a powerful power hehe
OMG...I learnt that Calgary is the home of this recipe! Soooooo interesting. I used to enjoy the very best on 7th Av and 5th street, there’s a fantastic Chinese restaurant there (Cant remember the name!) that would adjust and make it with deep fried tofu for me. This is my favourite of all non traditional “Chinese” dishes, I lived in Calgary for 17 year working in the entertainment industry and working as a Vegan chef at Community Natural Foods in the day time. Now, through providence, I live in Australia. Thank you so much for this whip of of a recipe share. It looks exactly spot on, serious Calgary vibes here, nostalgic inducing and try this asap! 🔥 Would you show us how to make a chared ho-fun? ❤️❤️❤️❤️
