Vedic vs Western Astrology: Are They Not Saying The Same Thing?

In this captivating episode, I’m joined by Mike Holliday, a renowned Vedic astrologer whose global journey has enriched his mastery of both Eastern and Western astrological traditions. Mike brings his profound insight to a detailed reading of my natal chart, focusing particularly on the moon sign from a Vedic perspective. Throughout our discussion, we explore the intriguing intersections between Western and Eastern astrology, examining how each tradition interprets the solar system’s relationship with the 12 constellations. Join us for a thought-provoking conversation that bridges the cosmic divide between two powerful astrological systems.
Mike has been teaching, coaching & counselling for over 20 years: yoga, acupuncture, massage and physical therapy, philosophy, Vedic Astrology and martial arts. He has dedicated his life to the the esoteric sciences, psychology, philosophy, and healing on every level. He mostly follows a very simple tradition, classical path of yoga inspired by the Shaiva monks he’s lived and travelled with. The Scholars & Brahmins of Varanasi make up the foundation of his higher studies, while the small ashrams along Narmada river and the deep forest of Canada have provided ground for his deepest spiritual practices. He is a true scholar and practitioner of the Tantric and Vedic arts, sciences & spiritual paths. He shows us how traditional perspectives are still relevant to the modern world.

To clarify, "Eastern astrology" usually refers to Chinese astrology rather than Hindu/vedic. Like yoga, astrology is another aspect of hinduism (part of a whole) & is closely intertwined with ayurveda & vaastu

We live in a time where if you google ancient practises or systems or walk into a book store, the majority of sources are all Western/European, with the propelled narrative that everything South Asian was born in India. Hindu astrology has been renamed vedic (vay-dik) astrology to distance its identity from hinduism, & is far more intricate than Western astrology, to the point where predictions can be made down to the minute because the math is so precise. Astrology is such an integral part of South Asian cultures from baby naming to both "minor" & major life decisions that typically, astrologers are pandits (puhn-dits) who come from a lineage of astrologers, & descendants of families continue to consult them because their family has known them for generations. Often revered almost as a preist would be, astrologers carry a profound role because they read more than just charts - they read your energy, palms, body, they perform pujas & "prescribe" certain practises the way a healer would prescribe medicine. It's painful to see what British intrusions & subsequent Western access has resulted in. I would not say that one can easily become "their own" astrologer, but it is definitely good to broaden one's awareness that there are other systems outside of the Eurocentric info that we've been groomed to accept as the default point of reference

Incredible insight. Thank you for sharing. While there may be a proclivity to Western influence in these ancient esoteric sciences, I find it particularly well described by the time it is perceived and innerstood by the West - after all this is where the sun (light, truth, consciousness) settles as it sets versus its explosive nature while rising in the East. I agree that it takes a lot more than being a lover or student of astrology or anything for that matter to call one an astrologer or suggest expertise in that particular thing. At the end of the day, what matters most is that people are continuing to thirst for the knowledge that's been hidden and forbidden by religion for as long as we've been living and more. Would love for you to suggest some sources for us! Any particular favourites?
