Vector W8 Twin Turbo: Ride and Drive

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I got the experience of a lifetime: riding in and actually driving a Vector W8!! I never thought this day would come. This car came out when turbo lag was a huge thing, and you can feel it in this car. But it takes off once the turbos are going full blast. I would like to thank the friendly owner for making this a dream come true!

Vectors are such fascinating cars. The styling is so wild, inside and out, and the story behind them is equally crazy. I've had the luck and pleasure to have seen a W8 in person, as well as a W12 being driven by none other than Jerry Wiegert, although I didn't know it was him at the time.

Early prototypes had no mirrors because they were trying to install the world's first onboard view cameras including backup cameras. Makes sense to try that as the view to the rear is blind. If you see pictures of the first fully assembled prototype, notice a tiny 4" TV on an arm between the seats. That was for the backup and side cameras.

I remember the hype in the car media about the Vector in the mid 1980s. It was portrayed as sort of a Tucker story - an outsider was going to turn the surpercar market on its head with a remarkable car. There was always more hype than reality, so of course when a car was finally produced, it couldn't match the expectations. It was best as a teen postercar.

I've heard some other people make the same observation about the exhaust, so there is a possibility. Regarding the acceleration, this car definitely has turbo lag. It starts to take off once the turbos have spooled up, but we just wanted to be careful about going to fast. I would love to drive this thing on a long airport runway to see how it accelerates then. Dry sump alloy block with forged internals, a twin turbo V8 mounted in the back. People even knocking the built 3 speed should know how much insane potential the platform for this car has once refined. Modern engine management and fuel / a supporting fuel system would allow it to hang with supercars of a far more recent era.

Cool car I knew Jerry, he was a local car guy in the Santa Monica Venice area, not sure who tuned the car before the video was shot, but they needed to back the timing off or run a higher octane gas in the car, the car is pinging like crazy under acceleration.

This and the Countach are probably the most outrageous cars ever built. I would love to see one but it's unlikely I'll get the chance because they are so rare. I imagine keeping one on the road is a real challenge since parts are totally unavailable. Just for the fun and adventure of it if you get the chance to drive a Yugo you just have to do it. Those things are completely unpredictable.

Well, many of the owners are the ORIGINAL owners and refuse to part with the car because they know how rare it is. Also, interestingly, many say although a supercar, it is unusually reliable and has amazing body work, i mean there isn't a single misaligned panel. I remember a car magazine invited to the body shop and the writer said the welders were VERY picky about the quality of the welds. They wanted it absolutely uniform throughout the frame. When they finally got to the exterior panels, the writer couldn't help noticing that everything was perfectly aligned. I mean perfectly.
