In Canada this version was known as the Lada Signet. The 2106, called the Lada 1500 here, had already opened the way for other Warsaw pact cars to make it to Canada by demonstrating that Canadian consumers did not object to buying cars from communist countries as long as they were inexpensive and accepted to run at least most of the time. In this regard Ladas were better than most because, unlike the Fiats they were based on, they could cope with our winters. Alas for Lada and all the other Eastern European cars, their rusticity meant they didn't stand a chance once the Koreans arrived with fully-equipped cars at similar prices.
