The moment I saw the discolouration of the enamel coating there was a 99% chance that motor was toast. The enamel coating on the winding's is the insulation. A company I worked for made Arc Welders and Spot Welders. The transformers not only used enamel coated copper wire for the transformer winding's but the completed transformer was preheated in a furnace/oven and dipped in another insulating resin and baked overnight for added safety and to prevent the winding's from vibrating against each other due to the magnetic field.

BASF used to have a plant at a place called Slinfold in the U.K that made that coating . The chemicals involved were extremely toxic and unstable . They reckoned that if the plant went boom it would take out the nearby village . They used to practice for if a plane going into Gatwick airport crashed there

For future reference Vince, motors generally have a reverse threaded nut on the shaft, so that inertia "tightens" when it spins. That's why the nut wouldn't come off when you tried

Did just that only a few months ago, should have realised at my age, worse, I used an impact driver, sooo difficult to get off once I had stripped the thread, had to re-thread motor shaft to smaller size....... not fun

yeah, I learned that when dealing with a faulty blender once, and found it consistent all over motor based devices.

Vince, using Ohms Law, a 12 ohm load at 230 volts is a 19 amp draw. (I=E/R) As others have said, the motor windings are corroded and internally shorted. The burning smell is the 19 amps heating up the wire/windings and burning. Probably the switch as well. Essentially, you made a toaster.......

Ohms law is only accurate when calculating for DC - it will approximate only when calculating AC

@@Grumpy_Granddad agreed however it’s accurate enough to see that at that load it exceeded the house supply . In the US, standard household outlets are 15 amps. I wouldn’t have plugged it in.

Definitely a new motor required. Those windings are shot with the plastic cable ties melting and creating the burning smell. It's a race between a fire starting and the mains power tripping. Fortunately, the circuit breaker is doing it's job to prevent the other eventuality.

The cable ties were broken due to excess heat. The stator wires were burnt and were fused together causing a short between certain segments of the slip rings. Hope this helps?

I've learned a few times the hard way that trying to test motors and windings with a multimeter can easily trick you. If you do that more often an insulation resistance meter is worth it's money. I think they start around 50 bucks from brands like uni-t and others. They can do the resistance measurement under a high voltage so sparks can jump over and you don't get tricked by wrong results from a multimeter. If the insulation of some of the windings are slightly damaged or burned but don't touch each other you only measure the short under a high enough voltage because that's when the sparks jump over.

Hello Vince , I have been watching your videos for nine years now and have always found them informative and entertaining. You gave me the courage to take apart my own vacuum cleaner that was dead and after two weeks of cleaning in-between my job that the hoover was actually bagless . It now works , I would even go as far as to say that it's one mean sucker . Because of your channel I have saved money 💰💰 thank you Vince and I ❤ your rolls Royce my grandad had one before he passed away from COVID keep up the good work.

​@Mymatevince Yup sure are! I got tripped up for a minute when I pulled my Bissel HotShot carpet cleaner apart. That whole thing is an octopus of vinyl tubing inside. Such a PITA getting it all routed out of the way to get the casing halves back together. Good vid as usual buddy. Greetings from Kenosha, Wisconsin btw.

@@Mymatevince oh, yea, I know the feeling, been through this. It is like when you think you won an argument with a woman. You just pushed a little gey boy through a military school. Ever since my first vacuum cleaner "repair" I search the internet for every device I attempt to repair, even just from the same category, hard to find exactly same model. I would say, it doesn't change much, since the winding is cooked, but if you didn't strip it, you could attempt to rewind it. You would definitely fail, but it is really fun to try. You watch hours of your most careful work going with smoke in a split of a second. I did it like 4 times. Cheers mate.

Some of the windings on the commutator (the spinning bit in the middle of the motor) have gone short. That's why you were getting different resistance readings while turning it. Unfortunately without a heap of work rewinding the thing it's nackered I'm afraid. Cheers.

Hey Vince, not sure if you have tried this or not, but the REL button on your meter will zero the resistance in the leads.

I have this same unit, sold under a different brand name (and colors) but virtually the same construction, and of course US voltages and plug. It was a game-changer for our household and pet stains.

Hi Vince, you can generally tell by the smell when a winding is overheated and burning. The copper wire is insulated by a varnish and is unmistakeable. The cost of a motor rewind would be several times the cost of the machine so it is just junk. The copper can be reclaimed though. If you can get a new motor and it works, at least it will save even more plastic from landfill.

I happy that you didn't spoil the result by calling it a failure video, i like to be kept in suspense until the end. I generally don't watch anything where you spoil the result.

best thing about Vince is that its completely random, never know what you're gonna get. With other channels gets boring real quick watching a Switch/PlayStation/Xbox same faults and repairs for the 50th time.

Yep, agree. Doing a variety of things I think makes it more interesting. I try to mix it up as well.

I honestly thought those wet wipes were going to sort that molten mess of copper windings lol. Great content as always. There possibly are some motors available but not with that part number search for vax motor instead and it looks like you'd have to transfer the rubber covers maybe. Cant see enough detail on yours to tell, so could be wrong. Good luck all your effort deserves a fix.

Yep , bottom line it’s a bad design , great video by the way . I bought a reconditioned Vax duo pet carpet cleaner( turquoise blue) ,after 2 replacements, with essentially the same issue (smoke coming out of the engine cooling vents !) it turned out to be water ingress from a faulty reseal valve under the cleaner fluid tank . Overall with your and mine , it seems to be that Vax have greatly unskilled labour on their assembly lines , wisdom as they say is proved righteous by its works !

Brilliant video Vince! Is it wrong that I 🤣'd when the power went out - I feel so bad lol, but it was exciting!!! Your explanation of how it worked was interesting and I am sure correct! I've always wondered how these work so it was a really interesting watch!

The resistance readings can fluctuate as you're generating a voltage when you turn the motor and this affects the reading on the meter.

I agree with a lot of the comments below, the windings have cooked, the coating has melted that covers the copper wire and it has shorted. Just unlucky you don't have a PAT tester, this would have shown instantly that their is a high resistency, or dead short. Testing the windings with a multi meter can be a pain as sometimes the windings check ok until power is put through them, then it arcs out, heats up and pops your rcd, the motor kicks in, shorts a few times then the rcd cuts your power, this is why the motor reacted as it did.

I had the exact same fault on a VAX 6131. One of the outer coils had a short after the motor flooded. This explains the on-off stuttering, as only one side was active. I had to replace the motor but when it arrived it was not the same despite supplier's promise. However, with a bit of ingenuity and cutting of the inner plastic cowling, I got it to fit. My model has a floating ping-pong ball to cut off the vacuum tube to prevent water being sucked up when the tank is full. This had failed. A new ping-pong ball did the trick. The old one had a roughened surface. Don't know why. By the way, the motor fan thread is left-handed on mine, so I guess it was on yours! DOH!

If the machine tips over with waste water still in it, the "full" seal isn't going to work if its switched off, so water gets in the suction pipe. You pick it up, switch it on and the water in the pipe gets sucked into the motor flooding it and possibly shorting it too. Your test while turning the fan showed that some of the rotor windings had dead-shorted, and as you found if the motor is left on when not turning, it overloads and 'cooks' the stator coils (the burning smell you had). a new rotor at least is required, a whole motor to be safe. The rest of it is OK, although a bit dirty, and will live again. Don't landfill it, wait till motors become available.

Hi Vince, the motor most likely block because the stator casing is not secured on the front cap. You can see the holes for the screws @20:08 (4 holes on the motor housing and 4 holes on the black support). Probably somebody else has been there before and checked the burnt windings on the rotor.

You will get it next time Vince. Was a good video .

The design is clever to a point. But if the vacuum falls over with water in the dirty tank it will usually find it's way into the vacuum ducting and then into the motor. And because its dirty water it will end up causing shorts. If this happens to your vacuum its best to disconnect the dirty tank take the vacuum outside and run it until the motor is dry. I wouldn't recommend flushing the motor with clean water as its already a electrocution risk.

I honestly dont know what a good ohms reading is for motor windings, but anything

Like a transformer, since it is an AC device, it depends on inductance. The amount of power drawn is a function of both resistance and inductance (technically, resistance and reactance). So it will vary with the design of the motor. In other words, a motor with very thick winding wire and a lot of turns would appear to have a low resistance but would not take a lot of power because it has a lot of inductance due to the turns. A motor with thin wire (or maybe aluminum wire) and few turns would take a lot of power but have a higher resistance.

Failures on the copper coil aren't always visible. Only a slight area of scraped enamel will cause it to short and pull massive current, and trip. That's why it was revving, stopping, revving. The motor doesn't sound good either, the whole thing has heated up too much like an engine without oil and expanded excessively.

You need 2 sets of things, sometimes even 3 :) I have 3 sets of screwdrivers, 1 in the car, 1 in the shed, and 1 in the home-office. Similar for drills, etc...

Good effort Vince. I think I would have called it after seeing the windings burnt. I think what could have happened is this... If they had left the unit filled with water after use, moisture could have evaporated from the holding tank and the vapour went down the pipe and into the motor area causing the bearings to rust and seize the motor. The next time they used the unit (a few month later), it probably hummed and smoked a bit. They then probably unjammed the motor by turning the brush manually and then it ran with a very noisy bearing and semi burnt motor and tripped the electric.... and then you bought it :) Great effort though, and hopefully you can find a new motor for it👍

Thanks Mick, another option might be it leaking down from the clean water bottle up top. I only say that because since this video I was round my friends house and he borrowed one ( a Vax) that broke in his possession. He said it is a common issue with it leaking from that top bottle, travelling down the upright bit and dripping into the motor area. I hoping a replacement motor will turn up on eBay and I can get quick revisit done on it. Cheers for the help 👍👍

@@Mymatevince Ah no worries. I had something similar with a Milwaukee wet and dry vac (few months back) where moisture got into the bearings and rusted them resulting in a seized motor. Hopefully one will turn up with missing parts or cracked casing or something 🤞

Did you check if the cleaning brush spins freely? It could be something stuck in the brush like hair or carpet fibres that would block or slow down the motor and make it overheat? That also happens with Dyson vacuums except they have a safety that stops the motor if the cleaning brush is blocked, if this one doesn’t have that, that could give this kind of symptoms I guess

I have this cleaner, and the float works way better than you think... it pretty much doesn't pull any water up from the carpet when tbe float is up

Use ohms law to calculate the current draw based on volts and ohms. Windings shorted, overheated, shorted some more, and ewaste results.

My bet is the windings have shorted due to corrosion. This caused a winding to overheat and that explains the burnt ties. Instead of replacing the motor, why not try rewinding the motor. Count the old windings as you remove them and rewind exactly the same way.

Oh i have had a ton of success using a small (purposely cheap underpowered) impact gun for removing fan motors. The biggest thing i forget is the reverse thread 😅.

I wish this video was older :D I had bought this exact model (different color) for the same purpose, similar issue, and it was in the corner for near a year before i lost interest and gave it away..

It would have been interesting to measure the rotor windings. Since the stator windings had the same resistance, but the resistance fluctuated when measuring both together (the whole motor) - its likely the rotor windings. If you have the patience, you could rewind the defective windings for very little money. Also: It is not well explained while there is a lockup at the end. It is well possible that there is a mechanical issue with the vacuum. The burned up moto is then only the result of the lockup.

I have one of these vax carpet cleaners and water gets in to the motor area VERY easily. I have had mine apart to dry the motor out several times.

Probably the fishing spinner jammed the float thing . How one of those would get into a carpet cleaner is beyond me . I used to work for a commercial carpet cleaning company and the first thing you did was vacuum the carpet . If the motor got hot enough to melt the cable ties the chances are it has burnt through the insulation on the windings

Vince where the cable ties was inside the motor, the coating was worn away and causing a short in the windings

The turbine nut is unscrewed the other way around. It is the only nut in this engine that loosens on the right, because otherwise it would loosen when starting.

I wonder if you could get a similar motor for cheap, and transplant appropriate components assuming the rotating part looks good enough as it appears that's the unique part to this device?

Surprised that the fuse in the plug didn't blow first, although I have had the exactly the same thing with a cheap pedestal fan.

The stator windings look overheated and shorted - hence the skipping. Probably stuck motor overheated them.

Motor definitely shot. It was a really, really bad sign at the video start when you turned the brush/motor assy and the ohm reading about tripled. Wether locked down and not turning or not, the ohm reading should not vary like that just by commutator turning on brushes. I also wonder if the water got in the motor because someone stored it laying down (or it fell over) with water in the recovery tank? Hope you find a motor soon mate!

I have seen some great video in youtube that cover re-doing the windings on the motor, could make a good at attempting to do this

What follows is only a guess: I believe there is a semi short somewhere in the windings of one portion of your stator. Hence why when the rotor was spun and the magnetic fields where shifted you noticed the drop in resistance at the plug. A short as we often know creates more heat as voltage is shunt through the least resistant path and the current allowed in the circuit is no longer shared among the entire circuit. Thus producing excess heat in one area. In this regard melting the plastic bindings. Unless you have the aptitude to rebuild the stator, you are probably best to discard and get a replacement. It is odd that it locked or seized up like it did with the permanent magnets on the rotor not looking excessively damaged. Regardless is was a good attempt and I enjoyed following with you along the repair.

@@unperrier5998 fair, not the best terminology on my end. What I meant by this is exposed copper in the winding that is either occasionally shorting due to vibration or that are close enough to each other that even without direct contact there is arcing because of the circuit inductance.

yup. melted coil windings, maybe if you got the new motor u could use your spinning bit in the new motor.

I think I know exactly the source of the fault. Probably there was a damaged basket in the bearing. As an effect balls could spin freely, but sometimes the bearing was blocked, causing overheating of the winding and short both within them as well as to the body.

My goodness,you need an accurate meter that measures correctly. That motor got really hot. Wonder if it did get wet.

19 minutes and 33 seconds on the left side of the lower winding in the video You can see what appears to be really shiny metal I believe the zip tie broke from the heat and then the windings rubbed out against the stator supports and they shorted to it. Also if you look at the design of the cooling fan it doesn't make much sense The cooling fan is trying to pull air from the back of the suction fan it just looks like a bad motor design all around. They should have put the white cooling fan at the back of the motor where it could get fresh air from the looks of that plastic housing it's overheated quite a few times maybe that's just down to the design of the motor

As the UK have fuses in the plug, I wonder why it didn't blow that fuse first?

I hate working on any Vax product as they often take forever to get to bits. Plus, getting parts for them can be a right pain. The number of machines I've plugged in and instantly smelt a burning smell coming from them is ridiculous. Also, the recovery tank on Carpet machines such as this are almost always smaller than the solution tank as you'll never suck up all the water the machine releases.

Hi vince! Long time no see, quite annoyed actually. KZread just stopped recommending me your videos! I normally watch every RR video and yet i was never recommended them.

Family must get fed up of being plunged into darkness. 😂 What probably happened to the machine was that it was laid down on its back or side (e.g. to clean the brush roll) with the tanks fitted and water in them. My VAX carpet cleaner (different model) goes to great pains warning never to do this as water can then get into the motor. Tanks must always be removed before laying the machine down. The float valve in the bottom tank shuts off the vacuum so no more water is sucked up, stopping the tank overfilling and again entering the motor. Laying the machine down negates the function of the float valve.

I think three of the windings on the stater, have definitely burnt through some of the insulation and that’s what’s causing it to heat up like a bar heater melting more of the enamel.

Have you thought about contacting a company that does motor rewind services? Should be a simple fix, regardless of the size of motor.

If that was 10 ohms shouldn’t that be pulling around 24amps on that winding? Current= voltage(240) / resistance 10ohm?

best to use another shorter extension cable rather than a huge reel all wound on the reel whilst in use - it can overheat and trip electrics itself, trip a thermal detector if fitted, or if not, just melt...if this powering a lot of hungry devices...

On age, odd not to see a moulded plug on this. Also, did I see a 13amp fuse? Maybe older than you think. Often worth looking at the motor and plastic mouldings to see the year of manufacture. (Ps also a useful trick when buying cars etc. if you suspect accident repair. Might not be obvious but a give away is buying say, a 2012 vehicle with a couple of parts with a 2020 manufacture date! 😂😂

Im surprised that a tinkerer at the level vince is that he hasent worked on motors before.. motors were the first electronics i worked on myself.. also surprised as hell he doesnt have a socket set handy off top.. kinda odd seeing on how much stuff has bolts and nuts on em..

Google Dim Bulb Tester. Make one of those for use with anything which may have an internal short.

Only you can have me watch for a few minutes explaining how a carpet washer sucks.

Mate I`d have gave up after seeing low ohms reading and definitely after those dark windings in the motor my guess is it sucked up too much water burning out the motor the fishing device was maybe just a fools prize caught up in the fun of killing a carpet cleaner my shop vac was killed in similar manner too much water bad float not paying attention

it's fd my guess it fell over while running, with water in the tank, and that bypassed the float

A 220v power device that uses water and causes a short .... that is not something I would buy to fix. Even if you can fix it, how can you know all seals are ok?

i'd say the winding melted and shorted internally. just search for a replacement motor. it is interesting how they fail - but it's not worth the time and hardly possible saving them

I think that circuit breaker detects current leaking to ground/earth. In this case, the motor was shorted from live to neutral, drawing a huge load but no leakage to the earth pin. A fuse or surge protector was needed here I think. If the copper winding had shorted to the motor housing, I think the earth leakage would have tripped.
