Variable Valve Timing Cleaning P0011-P0021

Спорт

This video shows a little of what Can a P0011 or a p0021 really is.. this came off from a Nissan Maxima 3.5L.. and I also show how to test the sensor to see if it’s actually bad before cleaning..
I went ahead and cut some parts of the video due to because if I would’ve left it without cuts then you’ll be watching a 40 + mins video...

Good to go dude. I've had this code off and on for a long time. Usually right before I'm due for an oil change, I thought being 1/4-1/2qt low might trigger it. Anyway, I pulled the solenoid out and cleaned it up good, there was a lot of gunk after 150k miles.

Jbolanos 10 You rock!!! I was going nuts trying to find out the name of the VVT/Solenoid for my 2004 Maxima 3.5 I just had the valve covers replaced a week ago. A job that I could've done but I hurt my hand. Soooo It cost me almost $800 bucs Parts and labor. $300. for the covers, $180.for three coils. And $300. for the labor...quite an expensive job. So to the point here. I started to see oil leaking from which I thought was the valve cover. Down to the alternator. Also oil had splashed up by the fuse box on the right. I cleaned up the oil. Took the car on some errands and then checked by the solenoid again....a little oil was seen. And I found it was coming from the housing for the solenoid. Possibly a gasket leak. So I'm going to the dealer to pick up one gasket (only doing the front of the car side) and I'll follow how you did yours. Hopefully I'll solve my oil leak problem. Thanks much for the video!! I learned a lot and god willing I'll be saving myself some money!!! I subscribed to your website also...You do a great job at explaining the "How Too's"!! Be well buddy, TED

Mine 05 Nissan Xterra 4.0., was not the VVT solenoid, but the bank 2 camshaft sensor. I had a code for the camshaft sensor awhile back (p0340 or 0345, whichever is bank 2) and replaced it with a sensor that I got on ebay that was supposed to be a smp PC461 that the guy had in bulk, no box. I paid $8.98 shipped for it. So, who knows exactly what it was, but it lasted for 30k miles and was still working fine, except I was getting a P0021 code for that bank and for the last 5k miles or so, it would take a few turns before she would start. Suspecting this sensor, I decided to change it before I bought a new VVT solenoid. I got a New Hitachi CPS0013 (these are the revised versions, that has the metal tip) and installed it and that solved the problem, no more P0021 code. I was also getting a random P0420 code and once I got the p0430 code. The p0420 code didn't start appearing until after I changed the 02 sensor, due to having a p1158, p1031 code, which are linked to bank 1 sensor 1 02 sensor. Once I replaced the 02 sensor all codes except the p0021 went away, however a day later, I started getting a p0420 code, I could clear it and it may stay off for a day or so or it may come back on the same day. However, there are a lot of things that can trip a p0420 code, but I went ahead and did the lacquer thinner trick in the gas, to see if that could help clean the converter, just in case it was getting clogged. I put one gallon of lacquer thinner to just under half a tank of gas. It's possible that the camshaft sensor issue was helping to trip a p0420 code due to misfire or timing being too advanced. Not sure just yet, but as on now, since I replaced the camshaft sensor, no codes have returned. If something changes I will let you know.

So is the bank 1 actuator (P0011 is for bank 1) closest to the radiator or firewall? I'm glad to see you were able to remove the rear solenoid without pulling out the intake manifold. I had to do it for the rear plugs not long ago and that wasn't fun.

  • @drocha3257

I just did the right one by the firewall. Bank 1 I believe. I didn't remove the plenum but I removed the old one and replaced it to make sure I knew how to do it. I changed the oil because I used Engine Restore and was low on oil. Apparently this clogs the solenoids and makes it rough start. I cleaned both solenoids but got the rear one (difficult one) new. Runs way better but still getting the front(left) one new. On order off Ebay.

I removed the bolts to the electrical harness running right on top of the solenoid. moved it out the way. Then, I used a long flat screwdriver thru the backside of the connector. This pops up the tab instead of squeezing and pulling like on the one on the radiator side. I bent a piece of plastic coated tie wire that comes with electronics into a 90 degree angle and placed it thru the gasket whole that doesnt take the bolt. Top hole furthest away from you.

The owner is looking for the receipt to see what parts were change. Her vehicle is making engine noise according to her and it gets louder when vehicle or outside temp is cold.

MixBoyChris if you have the same exact code and you clean the VVT sensor and after erasing the code still won’t go away, due a engine flush and then add the oil you going use for use ... why am I saying this??! See , Nissan made an engine where it get very picky about service especially with oil viscosity having dirty oil, or wrong oil viscosity will activate the sensor and mess with the timing.. I will suggest clean the sensors first and then change your oil, I always been using full synthetic on all my cars better lubrication and burns less also prevent from having oil leaks.. let me know how it goes.. The "Left is towards the front, the right is for the back by your firewall. I think they go by standing on the drivers side of the engine compartment. Just another note here...If you have to replace spark plugs or coils? Stand in front of the engine/car...And the order is/starts from the left hand side, coil #1 is in the back by the firewall. Coil #2 is the first coil directly in front of you by the radiator and so on. So in short the back/right is 135....The front is 246. Too be safe you can also google it. Hope that helped you somewhat. One more thing...if your going to change out the spark plugs on the firewall side? You have to remove the plenum/ the cast aluminum three channel thing on top of the engine. There's no getting away from that. Do it once? And you're gold. Good luck!

@Jonathan Montano So currently, my problem is resolved. I have driven about 3000+ miles and luckily the code hasn't come back. I bought an aftermarket bank 2 sensor from advance auto but it did not fit all the way into the engine. There was at least 1-2 millimeters gap between the sensor and the hole for the sensor in the engine. Anyway long story short, I am using the old sensor but i cleaned it up with a rag. The old sensor fit nice and snuggly. The only thing I can make out of why I was getting the P0021 and P0345, is that my car was running low on oil. When I changed the oil, I only got 3 1/2 quarts out. So now just add a little bit of oil every 500 miles or so. Also, now I am using the mobil 1 high mileage 5w30 oil. I hope this helps.
