Variable CAM Timing
Get the book here: www.createspace.com/4321251
Variable CAM timing is a concept that entails changing the camshaft timing, as needed, depending on engine LOAD demands. This technology was impossible just a few years ago, due to the state of the art electronics needed. The latest Variable CAM Timing (VCT) systems are infinitely variable, meaning they have no specified settings. CAM timing can be changed or varied instantaneously across the whole range (ie. Plus or Minus 30 degrees from normal). By varying the CAM timing, the ECM can regulate the power curve to meet its own needs. On any gasoline engine, each RPM setting has an optimum CAM timing setting, depending on load. Up until a few years ago engines were set whatever the CAM lobes were machined at. With modern VCT, this relationship can be varied, also varying the engine's power curve. Most modern VCT systems do not control valve lift, but do great by simply changing open and close timing points during engine operation. See how it works here, with this superbly animated training video on automotive technology and variable cam timing (VCT).

    I replaced my intake and exhaust solenoids on my 2009 Cobalt SS. Driving around town it drove well enough only had a slight rough idle. When power was demanded it would shake the car like the gas pedal was being stepped on and off. After the install I cleared the codes and went for a drive with instant results. Very good video I learned some more :).

    @HamadHHAG No, 4 cylinders also use this technology. Pretty much all vehicles now use some form of variable valve timing. The latest in valve control is BMWs variable valve lift. See our video on this subject. Thanks so much for posting.

    Correct, There is only one V-tec, it's Honda's. Nissan is N-VCT, Toyota is VVti and so on. It's just like when Cadillac came out with the 4.6L Northstar v8, then Ford came out with their 32V 4.6 and then dubbed it "Intech" in 1996, but people still called it a "Northstar" because it was a 32v 4.6L V8.

    Going through this headache with a 2010 Jetta 2.5 engine. Snap on scanner showed VVT solenoid. I replaced and tested the old solenoid as well. It was not plugged up or anything from dirty oil. New one did not fix the issue. It also gives codes for the cam sensor, crank sensor, map sensor, and misfiring cylinders. Its at 88,000 miles so I gave it the full tune up and changed all the sensors, and R8 coil packs and new plugs. The camshaft sensor was quite dirty and did make an improvement in the car. But the problem is still there. It still throws all the codes and misfires. I am believing at this point it is time to pull the timing chain cover. I believe it to be the cam phaser itself and not a loose timing chain as everything is very quiet. The early 2.5 had a recall for timing chain issues but was supposedly resolved for 2010. I'm hoping its not the timing chain as its a very expensive repair. I could do it but it involves taking off the head as well as the transmission and possibly pulling the engine..Take me at least a week and probably special VW tools needed..Quoted $1900 for the job from VW. If I clear all codes it idles rough, up and down. I believe it is caused by the VVT solenoid giving it full advance and higher oil pressure onto the cam phaser making it do this as it smooths out as soon as I drive it and goes back to a normal idle..As I said the chain is quiet so hopeful its just a faulty cam phaser.

    No, you're over thinking this issue. It's a duty-cycle controlled (PWM) with 12 volt steady and PWM ground on the other. Some manufacturers may use a different arrangement, but this is the most prevalent. Makes sense?

    So the manual tells you to “unlock” the vvt on the cams prior to putting them back on after a rebuild. So tell me what happens if you didn’t follow the complex process of using two air chucks and tape to unlock or ensure they are unlocked? Wont they unlock or reset when the vehicle is started the first time? Car started just fine and seems to idle good. But on the third drive i got some random misfires and p0017 codes pop up. Thinking i need to clean the oil control valves. These codes didnt come up until several like ten miles and after a long slow idle so the engine was good and warm. Any ideas?

    Emissions is not the only reason. You could just do enough with EGR valve. The idea is to fully control the power output of an engine. Bosch calls this torque management system and for this to happen the ECM needs to control all systems, including valves and throttle. Thanks for posting...

    If a VVT problem is causing misfires you probably shouldn't drive it at all. Driving any car with misfires can damage the catalytic converter. As such you could turn a relatively inexpensive repair of the VVT system into needing a new and very expensive catalytic converter.

    I have a Mazda CX-7 with a 4 cylinder turbo engine. It had timing issues and I had all the related parts replaced. Finally we sent it to Mazda with a #1 cylinder miss. Mazda says the timing changes while the engine is running due to something they called diamond shims or spacers. Has anyone heard of this part?

No degree's markings that I can see so the cam sprocket must adjust for that. It will be a sad day in this hell if I have to take whole engine apart again to get to timing chain again. It's so AWESOME to have to remove 3- motor mounts, crossmember, heat shield, exhaust, flywheel inspection cover, 2- oil pans, along with all usual parts JUST TO REMOVE TIMING COVER !! - GOOD LOOKING OUT - TEAM screw the customer NISSAN . No, this code P0171 is very common and points to an Air/Fuel imbalance, like a vacuum leak etc. See which side it's doing it, if it's a V type engine and then use the Fuel Trims to help you. ADPTraining Vehicle is a 2001 Corolla 1.8L with plastic intake. It's only lean at idle. I removed all hoses that connects to the intake manifold and plugged them. Still lean. It already has a new MAF and Fuel pump. What else could it be?

  • @ADPTraining

    @ADPTraining

    10 жыл бұрын

    Plastic intakes are notorious for O-Ring leaking. So, you may have to remove it and replace the O-Rings. Before you do that though, use propane to find the leak and make sure before you do all that work. Ans always use the FuelTrims PID on your scan tool to detect the issue. You may also have to reset adaptive memory after or in between tests. Good luck. PS. Here's a publication that will help. sites.fastspring.com/autodiagnosticsandpublishing/instant/automotive_equipment_repair_strategy

  • @ADPTraining

    @ADPTraining

    10 жыл бұрын

    Yes, I've seen this many, many times. You need to use propane and a long hose or hollow tube to run the propane at various suspect sources. On FORD V6 for example, the intake variable air induction valve shaft (1/8 inch shaft) leaks and you need to replace the entire manifold. As I said, use the FUEL TRIMS and propane. That's the fastest way to do it. Good luck.
