Vanilla Thieves Of Madagascar (Full Documentary) - BBC News
The robberies are often violent. There have been dozens of murders in Madagascar linked to vanilla. Several communities have tried and failed to get protection from armed police. Some have taken the law into their own hands. Villagers say in a nearby village, a machete-wielding crowd descended on five suspected gangsters - hacking and stabbing them to death.
The killings have yet to be solved by the police. Locals say there is no will or capacity in the police forces to investigate the vanilla thefts - or the mob justice that sometimes follows.

A relief to see that the farmers are actually seeing a difference with the 100% price raise
Wow that’s crazy! Poor madagascarian farmers, the middle man always wants his bite! That is beyond unfair! The whole world is so unfair!

Wonderful interesting topic.
Reporter is ridiculously attractive.
Good content
The majority of the world's vanilla is the V. planifolia species, commonly known as Bourbon vanilla or Madagascar vanilla. Madagascar and Indonesia produce two-thirds of the world's supply of vanilla. Mexico, once the leading producer of natural vanilla with an annual yield of 500 tons of cured beans, produced only 10 tons in 2006. An estimated 95% of "vanilla" products are artificially flavored with vanillin derived from lignin instead of vanilla fruits.
Inga mortoniana can't be use as a substitute?
Am here for the reporter😍

I find it interesting some of them look East Asian. For example: guy at 4:33 . Apparently some seafaring East Asians mixed with the Madagascan population long ago.

Bloomin erk! All this just for vanilla essence? Wow! I will never look at vanilla again without seeing that poor guy who lost his crop or that couple who sleep so near the Orchid just to keep it!
Could you edit this down to say three minutes....
I'm surprised this documentary didn't explore the reason vanilla prices spiked. There's enough in that story to make a second video, showing how middleman speculators (some using laundered money) are the real winners.
Cut trees for current profit loose island in the years to come...Mother nature. Sad.
In India people tried vanilla agriculture. Initially there was lot of demand. people earned money. Within few months the demand went down and people stopped it.
Its very interesting documentary. The market of Madagascar vanilla is very high very less of profit get by the Madagascar farmers the yerners of this business is the middlemens
Wow, greedy buggers. Infuriating how greed runs everything now. Leave the farmers alone :(
Vanilla grows wild in Guatemala....has native pollinators too.

There are many species of plant in the Vanilla genus and members of the genus do indeed grow all over the world's tropics, including Guatemala, but only two wild species - both of which are native exclusively to Central America - produce the aromatic and edible fruit. It's these species the reporter was referring to regarding native pollinators (and what most people are referring to when they talk about a 'vanilla' plant in general).
It's disgraceful when the government doesn't help. They help each other and should be allowed to protect what they work hard for.
I love vanilla !
Awesome
I always thought vanilla was distilled out of ice-cream. Very interesting.
That's crazy.
Damn! Did u see grandmas muscles?

Vanilla quality went down and pods were picked to early because of the Chinese farmers who destroyed quality and increased quantity
He’s says they will loose vanilla and cloves in the Forrest because they are being cut down, I thought vanilla had to be hand pollination.?
@milkdudz

Vanilla does have to be hand pollinated to produce beans and so all plants grown in Madagascar are cultivated very closely. The man, Clovis, is talking about the heavy rainfall caused by the trees in a forest transpiring (part of a rainforest's water cycle), a process which is disrupted by the deforestation to make way for vanilla crops. Vanilla and cloves both need lots of rain to reach maturity quickly and give a good yield.
Sad that people would rather steal it than grow it themselves.Madagascar grows 37%, Indonesia 29%,China 11.1%, Mexico 6.5%,New Guinea 6.3%..Turkey and many African nations make up the remaining percentages..It's about 1/2 the price as of Aug 2018 $500/kg

Please Madagascar do your business inside ECOVILLAGES so you can preserve your WEALTH
I should start farming vanilla. :)
This kind of simplistic piece is no help to the Malagasy. Just because there are trees, doesn't make it primary rainforest. There is only 10% of the original forest left on the island and invasive species like pine and eucalyptus and humans are destroying natural habitat that Malagasy species need to survive. All lemurs are endangered. So sad.

Vanilla orchids technically do grow on trees, as they're climbing plants - so you're partly correct :) And yes, they do still exist and grow in the wild, but can only reproduce without human influence in Mexico and Central America. As the reporter mentioned, they rely on a very particular species of bee to pollinate their flowers, and this bee is not found anywhere else on the globe.

This comment is not consering this video , I am requesting people from the channel to make people aware of the current flood situation in Kerala , India which has resulted in the loss of many lives . Kerala is facing a grave situation and influencers such as urself can help a lot . Donations or providing aid and relief material is very urgent . I hope the people of the channel can make an awareness about the grave situation and help Kerala in this bad time . Channels such as these help a lot in spreading information to people and the grave situation in Kerala needs to be known to all .
