    Nick, thanks. This is Totally First-Class, excellent. I'd have a problem trying to decide between WTWAX and a combination of VTSAX and Vanguard's Total International Stock Index (with a smidgeon of VBTLX). Nevertheless I appreciate so much the light you shed on this fund. I was not aware of it. Keep up the great work Nick.

  • @nickdoyle-achievefinancial2464

    @@DennisMocheniat it’s questionable if it’s worth the hassle. The benefit of foreign tax credit varies based on income and portfolio size. For people affected by net investment income tax, it may not even be worth it at all, and make sense to have US in taxable. It might be worthwhile to pursue some of these strategies during working years, but not in retirement. It’s complex. Holding separately has also given me a couple tax loss harvest opportunities. I just change my yearly contributions to keep them at about the right level and rebalance once per year if needed. I have definitely been considering if it’s even worth the hassle lately. I may capitulate and switch to VT.

    The S&P is roughly 80% of VTSAX and VTSAX is ~60% of VTWAX. 80% * 60% = 48%. The precise numbers can be tracked by looking at the index factsheets and/or using boglehead's wiki which has approximations. www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Approximating_total_stock_market

    In your opinion are there any risks to ‘VT’ closing, forcing tax implications upon holders, as compared to VTI and VXUS? I tried searching AUM and daily trading volumes but I cannot distinguish whether VT would have that as a risk or not in comparison. It seems like VT is growing, which would be a good sign? If an ETF closes, one cannot just ‘roll over’ without taxes the money into a different investment in a brokerage account, right?

  • @nickdoyle-achievefinancial2464

    @nickdoyle-achievefinancial2464

    That's a good point. I guess that is a risk with any fund. I think the risk is quite low with VT, and even lower with VTI & VXUS. I guess it's another reason some may prefer to hold the individual funds, but I perceive the risk is too low for me to be concerned.

    Whats the difference between Vanguard FTSE All-World and Vanguard Total World Stock ETF?

  • @nickdoyle-achievefinancial2464

    @nickdoyle-achievefinancial2464

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Peter, It appears Vanguard only has a "All-World ex-US index," which tracks the FTSE All-World ex US Index. This index track large & mid cap companies in developed and emerging markets (excluding US). The Total World Stock ETF tracks the FTSE Global All Cap Index. This includes the US, and it also includes small cap companies in addition to large & mid. A fund that is more comparable to the "All-World ex-US" fund is Vanguard Total International ETF. This tracks the FTSE Global All Cap ex US Index, excluding US but including small cap stocks. FTSE has fact sheets for these indexes with more details. I hope this helps!

    Don’t hold VTWAX in your taxable account because you will not be able to take advantage of the foreign tax credit. Instead, split it between VTSAX and VTIAX at the proportion of your choosing. If you’re using a tax advantaged account like an IRA, 401K, or ROTH IRA, VTWAX is fine.
