I was going to comment the same: the kiosk is for "rice polishing." Pay for how much rice you want to polish. In rural areas, they are scattered everywhere. Really handy for small scale /hobby farmers!

The Typhon was so bad in South Korea they evacuated the World Scout Jamoree site. 45,000 childre and 5,000 adults.

The machine that you couldn't figure out is the machine to polish or clean brown rice or husked rice into white rice in order to make the rice edible. Someone have already mentioned it below.

It's a rice milling machine. People bring their own harvest from their rice paddies. The machine let you chose if you want brown rice or white rice with germ or 100% white rice. Also people like to keep their rice as fresh as possible, so you only mill your rice as you consume.😊

18:46 that is Kudzu, eventually the trees under it will die. It slowly smothers them to death, unless something like a hurricane rips enough of it off. It gets so big you cannot even kill it.

From what I was told when I was in Japan- it is a rice polishing machine

The machine that intrigued me at the supermarket was the rice milling machine. You bring your own brown rice and polish it to your liking. When completely milled, the rice becomes pure white and chunky, while for paella and fried rice, the rice is milled sparingly. It becomes hard and flaky. The Japanese love of rice knows no bounds 😃✨

There is a recommended free auto campsite in Fukuoka Prefecture in the Kyushu region. It is Nougata Auto Camp Ground. It is located by the river in the city, not in the mountains. It is free, but internet reservation is always required. Managed by the city 🌱🌱 There is an established segment of solo campers in Japan who enjoy camping alone and at their own leisure. You may have such encounters. I wish you guys a pleasant future exploration of Japan👍✨ There is a hot spring nearby called "Ikoino yu" available for 500 yen. Also, there is a main store of a Japanese rice cracker shop called "Mochi kichi". It is a very tasty snack! Try the salad or soy sauce flavor for 680 yen per bag 🎵.

Tornado watches and warnings are very common in the U.S. Midwest, where I live -- and they are taken seriously, especially when the sun is out to heat up the atmosphere before the front bringing cooler air. Good that you made it through OK.

When I was a kid, we used to have ice on the inside windows of the house, never mind a car.

My eyes have been opened to Japan’s beauty…. Thank you for sharing. Godspeed!

So you know as someone who lives in Texas, many times directly after a tornado / severe thunderstorm the sun can come out then go away. Actually the more sun you get immediately afterwards can mean a bad storm could form. Hot, humid weather means a bad thunderstorm is ominous

That garden was lovely. The people there are amazing. They are so friendly and so gracious. That is something I never even thought about. They all seem so happy. It’s a great place

Don't forget to visit Hiroshima. There are two world-famous World Heritage sites, Miyajima and the Peace Memorial Park, and the Atomic Bomb Museum is a must-see as a human being. And be sure to try Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki.

In the garden those giant “lilies” were lotus plants.

I don't really like raw tomatoes either, and have grown some kind of record crop this year out of a mere 7 plants. I've been canning and canning and canning tomatoes. I do eat cooked tomato sauces and stews, so these will be good in the winter. It is just so rare to find someone else who doesn't like them much and yet grows them!

Beautiful garden! The little flowers are water lily's and the big ones are Lotus flowers. Amazing trip!

I was staying in atami in 2019 the night typhoon faxai hit. I looked outside and the force of the wind would have literally blown me away. Next morning the skinkansen to Toyko ran an hour late (unheard of!) and when I got to Tokyo station the departure board for my connecting train was blank. Totally bonkers! It settled down by the afternoon and I made it to Niigata ok

Another great video! We had a huge thunder lighting storm with heavy rain here yesterday in Osaka at unverisal studios super Mario World. These storms make for great memories. Cheers!!🇨🇦🇯🇵🍻

Hi Sharon - we are purposefully running the videos late at the moment - for a few reasons, but one of them is we have some family time coming up and will be taking a few weeks off - this way we can still share videos - the other reason is ... we don't actually know the route yet !! LOL - so if we end up having to wait for a few months for a visa we can still share videos of the trip - realtime is shared on our patreon. 😉👍

Another fabulous video - you guys are part of my Sunday morning ritual - coffee and Tread The Globe. We split our year between Alaska and the Midwest and when we’re in the Midwest we’re near Tornado Alley and as we’re watching this my husband is saying “Chris ignore what you’re seeing and believe the radar” lol - we’ve been under tornado warnings and enjoying sunny skies and zero breeze then BAM it just arrives !! Glad you are both okay though and we are loving seeing Japan !!!

So interesting to find out you grew vegetables. I am now at a friend’s house outside my country who has numerous tomatoes in her greenhouse and lots of zucchini in the veggie beds.

That machine was for polishing rice that you grew yourself or brown rice that you have. It is for polishing rice. I have used them before. You buy unpolished rice and then you can polish it in different degrees from lightly polished to really well polished.

Happy you were safe during the storm. Beautiful garden walk. Everyone you meet are all so friendly. I am familiar with those jungle bug sounds haha I hear them every night when I go to bed and there are no jungles near me. Lots of cicadas, crickets, toads and screech owls and the sound is relentless.

Yes they are! This is so different from the UK - and seeing warning signs of monkeys crossing the road makes it feel very exciting !!

If you may drop in at some Roadside Station of Japan, "it is raw" and should eat a tomato packaged in small size than a common thing carefully. They have few smells that are unique with sweetness like fruit.

Such an adventurous week indeed. It amazes me that you seem to hardly see any other people, nor witness people tending to their gardens so lovingly.

I have to scrape inside too sometimes. It's a pain. We had rainike that 2 weeks ago. I couldn't see where I was going. Tornados too. I love how clean it is there. Stay safe.

Japan has tornado warnings but not many tornadoes.

there's not many places with views and scenery like that, hope you didn't worry to much when the storm was upon you, at least you found out where the leaks were. keep safe and well 😄

We live in Indiana and get tornado watches & warnings often. We are desensitized to the TW now. We have had tornadoes in towns around us but never experienced one. It's the rogue straight-line winds that we have dealt with. Recently a rogue wind sent our pergola in the backyard over our house and landed on our vehicle in the front driveway. Love your adventures! Safe travels!

For your info, that rice machine that was puzzling you, that’s a rice refining machine. The local people who grow rice bring their unpolished rice and put them through the machine to remove the bran. You’ll only find those machines in the countryside where farmers grow rice. Wishing you the best!

Amazed to see your video from Takamatsu, Kagawa. It’s not so popular with tourists. By the way the suspension bridge you drove over used to be the longest in the world. It’s has two decks, road vehicles on the top deck and trains on the lower deck. Ritsurin Koen is amazing, especially in Spring and Autumn.

My mistake, you’re right, I was thinking you might have come from the direction of Okayama and Kurishiki but you must have crossed onto Shikoku from Kobe

4:35 min the ETC lane are for cars that have Electronic toll reader in vehicle which opens the Gate automaticaly 😊

No matter what the weather throws at us, It is Taifun than closes schools.....Only a few times have they come our way....... But hell, they truly are scary,,,,you would not believe it!

Future reference I guess, there is a _portable air conditioner/heater_ called the _WAVE 2 Portable Air Conditioner by Eco Flow_ . It can run off solar panels or you might need a big battery. It is used in vans by people who live in vans. Vtoman makes a big battery power station that can charge while driving the van or charge off solar panels. A van life KZreadr I follow uses both. _vanlife plus_ is the name of his channel. He has reviews and discounts available. He has said it does get cool in the van…. Is your van insulated?? I think that would make a big difference. Many van lifers make sure to insulate their vans to keep the heat in in winter and the cool in in summer.

Are going to the Art Islands when you’re so close? You won’t find anything like them. An amazing experience.

22:25 - that is an Iseki & Co., Ltd. building. You guys were close, its actually a MILL building. You put your rice in and it mills it for you. If you grow (or purchase) raw rice, you can use these buildings (for a small fee) to polish the rice. This turns brown (or other varieties) into fine white rice good for sushi rolls. All the signs indicate you can run the rice through in stages to get the rice as clean as you want it.

@@billwx3864 There are a ton of rice varieties. But "brown rice" is usually just white rice that hasn't be polished yet. It has a kind of... husk on it. This is the same as "whole grain rice." There is no difference. "dirty rice" is just rice with seasoning (if you mean the cajun dish). Wild rice is just a variety of rice, it will look brown until polished as well.

Ohh the horrors, remember in 1996 getting the Kobe-Tianjin ferry, massive cyclone came in which caused a fair bit of damage.. We were put to anchor near Hiroshima Island having just passed under the bridge. That night the sunset was spectacular, stunning oranges and reds before it hit. The next morning the Chinese Captain asked to meet me and I asked him where the tornado passed, about 10nm away, nothing to worry about he said 😂 Shame you couldn't go and shelter Trudy behind the concrete loo block! Your machine is to polish rice, used to see them at the entrances of supermarkets too ...

Hi - we have not had to use the grey water tank or the black water tank !! In all of the rest stops there are toilet blocks and we have not had to use our toilet at all !! There are toilets EVERYWHERE !! Japan has to have the best toilet / bathroom culture we have ever seen !!

FYI: 23:30 This is a machine that mills rice. If you buy rice that has just been threshed, you will need to mill it using this machine. What you are talking about as noise is the sound of cicadas.
