In the summer of 2015, filmmakers Aimee Savard and Chase Bartee packed up their belongings, moved into their 1985 Volkswagen Westfalia, and left their home in Massachusetts. The goal? To make their way to Montana, and spend as much time as humanly possible exploring, fly fishing, and documenting their travels. Living in an eighty square foot van would pose its challenges. But the lessons learned and experiences gained over the next three and a half months would set events into motion that would change their lives forever.

    This video inspired me to go on a 3000 mile road trip with my best friend through the northern rocky mountains. It was pretty cheap and an awesome adventure. that experience completely changed my trajectory and inspired a passion in me for nature and the outdoors. For anyone thinking about doing something like this, just do it.

    4K Subs? How can people watch their brains melt into soup watching some dumb shit prank his friends with 20 million subscribers but let something as beautiful as this go unseen? Something with true American spirit and such personality and heart. I don't understand. Thank you for this. Inspiring and couldn't have been done any more beautifully

    In 2016, I took my 3 kids out of school and we lived in an RV and traveled the US for one year. In the RV we saw the lower 48 (all of them), made it to Alaska on a cruise ship, and hit Hawaii on our way back to Australia (our home). This brought back so many powerful memories that I had to keep stoping the video just to deal with the emotions it brought out. We traveled so many of the same roads, and I times, I think we may have even been in the same campsites. I'm so glad I found this, and look forward to your future videos.

    I have a brother in North Attleboro, where you started. It's a lovely, HUGE house and I designed his landscape. PART of the many, many things I've done in my life. My brother is only semi retired, in his 70's. That's how he has maintained his life and vigor and longevity, doing work and play, taking his sailboat out, shooting his guns, and writing for his newspaper.

    Sure is beautiful country, I have lived here since I was born.. As a native Montana resident I thank the tourism industry for helping fund our states struggling economy I.e. this film here. On the other hand when I hear things like "we left for the north to avoid the crowds", I cant help but hear some sort of elitist attitude and cant help but think, you two are the "crowds". From the perspective of an angler that lives here anyway, Rock creek is barely fishable anymore, flooded with out of state license plates and people who run through the woods to cut me off at the best holes, I call the leap froggers. I hope you guys were respectful and enjoyed yourselves. Thanks for the support and you make a nice video, but every year our state is flooded with people, some humble and some that seem to exude a sense of superiority and entitlement to our water. Stay humble. Peace

  • @TightLoops

    @TightLoops

    Thanks Caylin! Glad you liked the film. Just to be fair, my entire family is form Montana, and I've been fishing these waters since I was a boy as well. That stretch I was referring to is the Madison between Hebgen and Quake lakes and even when I first fished it 20 years ago it's been outrageously crowded on weekends. Hell, even most weekdays. It's certainly true that rivers are getting more and more crowded, and even the great state of Montana is not exempt from the growing pressures of increased angler counts. Everybody hates "leap froggers" so you're not alone, but to blame that mentality on people from out of state is a little silly. There's plenty of Montanans who'd be just as happy to leap frog you as the tourists are. And in the interest of staying humble, we should all remember that our waters don't belong to "us" any more than they do to anyone else. That's the wonderful thing about this countries public land; it's there for everyone to enjoy. It's also important to remember that none of us are really "natives" here. (I'm assuming form your name that you're not Native American) When we fished Rock Creek in 2015 we didn't have the same impression. Has it gotten worse? It's a shame if so, I don't imagine it can sustain too much pressure for too long. Hope you find some empty stretches this summer ;) Tight lines.

    I don’t know if you guys ever read the book “Trout Bum” but I’ve always wanted to take a year and do just that. I’ve been a Fly fisherman for 35 yrs and remember in the 70s it just seemed easier to “get away”. Sadly, you still very much need money to “rough it” these days- even campsites become expensive. Today my health has robbed me of such adventures. But I pray that I’m able to at least do a trip this Summer with my two adult Sons so we will have something like this to look back on. It may be the last time I have a chance to do this before their lives are “too busy” as well. So awesome that you guys took the time to connect w Montana. My feeling is that Montana is a Fly Fishing experience not to be missed. Some of the best trips I’ve ever had.

    Thanks for this. You took me back to the early to mid-70s when a group of high school friends and I would hitch west to The Beartooths, meet in Cooke City, and then head up into the BT Primitive area with precious little food or what would pass for proper gear today. We caught grayling, cutthroat and rainbow. Those were heady days...

    Thanks so much Andrew. I wouldn't be too bummed about not filming. Sometimes we wish we weren't filming either. Its great to have these films to look back on, but sometimes it feel like living through the eyes of the camera isn't really living at all :/ That being said. we really love sharing these experiences with folks like you. For better or worse, its an itch I think we'll always have to scratch!

    When I was a younger man I had the pleasure of touring your country, albeit with a contingent of Marines during a NATO exercise. Your country was lovely and it's people even more so. Fond memories of snowball fights with schoolchildren as our armored vehicles rolled through small towns. Perhaps one day I shall return.

    Thanks, Doug! We are definitely images makers first, and I think it shows. Basically all our films are figuring out a way to tell a story that fits into the beautiful images we wan't to capture. A little backwards, but sometimes it works.

    I have gone trout fishing in many parts of Montana and Idaho, Oregon and California in the 2,000's. It was a great experience. I ate some of my catches. I hiked a portion of the Appalachian Trail in the mid 1990's and then hiked the southern half of it the next year. Looking forward to doing the whole thing as an old man. Seeing videos like this really point great promise and "go get it, boy" at the thrill of doing it again. And, I will. Married, now I rarely do anything. I don't play my guitar anymore. I don't go camping, fishing, hunting, exploring, nothing. I rarely even go outside to enjoy the beautiful weather and nicely landscaped house I worked my ass off for. Whoever said marriage was supposed to be happy needs their ass kicked. I guess it can be, but I don't see it. Marriage is grand, they say, but divorce is 500 grand. I also have a Tahoe in storage, back in the USA, that in years past I used for camping and fishing trips. I'm going back to the USA to get it going and do some camping and fishing around the nation, and I'm not bringing "wifey" with me. It's going to be a prep toward getting my mindset to hike the AT again in the upcoming years, probably while in my 60's. If I wait any longer than that, there will be the greater chance of failure in my endeavor. Once I reach Maine, it is my intention, after I finish the Trail to the top of Katahdin, to go trout fishing for a month. It will be my next adventure until snows force me back south. I have started a channel peripheral to this friend and family only channel going now, specifically for revamping and riding my Kawasaki Ninja in the heart of Mexico. I'll post the link to that channel on this channel of mine, at the right time, though that Ninja channel is live already NOW. I also have an outdoor fishing and camping channel that, as well, will be linked in this channel of mine. That will be the channel where I put videos of purchases and preparing for my Appalachian Trail hike, and the actual hike itself. It will probably be in 3 to 5 years. The link will start showing up in 2023. LOOKING FORWARD to seeing the beauty of my olden golden years start playing out, cuz this ain't cutting it.
