Van Life Blizzard | Sub Zero Austria

Escaping Insane Snow Storm | Winter Vanlife Austria
In this winter van life travel vlog, we experience an insane snowstorm in Austria. Despite the heavy snowfall, we are able to tick off some bucket list experiences from a balloon ride over the Alps in Filzmoos to staying in a cozy cabin in the woods. We love our cabin life as we enjoyed the things that we don't usually get from living in a van. It was the perfect way to see out the snowstorm with movies, a fire, and an oven. We feel rested and recharged ready for more vanlife Europe content.

Welcome to the official Travel Beans KZread channel! On this channel, you’ll find a variety of travel and vlog content, in which you’ll see us in places like Thailand, Japan, USA, Slovenia, and more.
In 2017 we left home with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a sustainable travel lifestyle happen! We are now living our dream as digital nomads and want to inspire you to create your own story, whatever it may be!
After 5 years of aimless, yet enjoyable, backpacking around the world we found ourselves in New York City battling with depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on. After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle.
Our time spent battling depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. In our vlogs, we talk openly and honestly about our travel experiences, the digital nomad life and depression. We hope our videos can help to inspire you to create a life that makes you happy!

Yes, these stoves are very traditional in the Alpine region. Typical for farmhouses, but were surely widespread back in the days. They are called "Kachel-ofen", refering to the heat-storing tiles on the outside. Sometimes they even have wooden benches along the sides and a simple bed on top for resting in the cosy warmth of the oven.

Excellent decision to stay in the cabin! Yes, you're right about us Canadians and hearing us chortle at your snow adventures. "Kachelofen" is a pan-European thing (Kachel=tile and ofen=stove) stretching from Scandinavia down to the Italian alps, and over into Hungary. Healthy heat, albeit dry - we used to put trays of water on the flatter surfaces (eg. on top). Recommend Slovenia and Slovakia for more great skiing.

I've never seen so much joy over a snowstorm 😁. As a Canadian who's husband has had to snow blow 4 times in the last 3 days to get us in and out of our 100 meter driveway, I think you have earned the badge Alex! Well done! 👍 I can understand getting excited about it to be honest. It is quite beautiful. It just gets tiring when there is so much snow, and it keeps coming. It has been one of those winters in Manitoba. I would absolutely take a balloon ride, and that one looked fabulous. I still would love to see you guys do a tour of France, small towns, along the coast. Of course, it's a little selfish of me, because we are planning a short, one week driving trip primarily in the Brittany area for 2023, along with Ireland, Scotland, and some relax time in Croatia. CANNOT wait! I can't wait to travel again! Hoping to get some tips from you for France. Loved the VLOG! - Coreen

Tossed and turned, cussed for hours about the shoddy insulation job I did, how I'll have to beef up the window covers, thicker curtain! Was so embarassed when I got out of bed in the morning and realised! Rookie error lol! Wow! I envy you the balloon flight! I'd love to do that (have done it here in the UK). The footprints you asked about are rabbit prints. The 'fireplace' you fired up in the cabin is traditional in Austria, Germany, Scandinavia, maybe other countries too, that I don't know about. It's called "Kachelofen", (Kachel: tiles, Ofen: oven, stove). I've enjoyed your Austria vlogs tremendously - it's my home country, and I grew up not far from where you've been 'frolicking in the snow'.

Hi to you both . I am currently living in Ireland in County Kerry with my mother. I found your channel about a month ago. And I almost fell over with excitement My father is Austrian born and currently my sister is living in Austria not too far away from where you were she's not far from Innsbruck. I recognised some of the mountains in the background I was skiing up near the mountains in the 80s and 90s.. You asked about the stove in the cabin they are known as kachelofen and well known in Austria long before my father was even born and that was in around the time before the Titanic was built. My mother put two kachelofen into our house the end of the 80s I am currently nice and snug and warm from the heat from the kachelofen .they are brilliant stoves. Your videos are epic I get so excited seeing the snow and countryside I recognise thank you for sharing and hope that you have a successful time. Yours sincerely here from Ireland thank you.

... and don't forget the "targ", the legendary market on Zakopane Main Street, where they sell those traditional leather shoes, the toys, and all the other stuff directly imported from China, and the smoked cheese Oszipka, which is the only thing which is really traditional there... Sorry guys, but Zakopane is only beautiful when you travel there outside the main tourist season or you turn the time back to the 1990-ies where I had been there the first time!!! Anyway, if you find a spot there which is not full of tourists it is still beautiful there

The masonry heater was a traditional way of heating houses back in the day, (all over the colder parts of Europe, I guess, you can find them in castles), people would also cook on it in the cottages (the Uk would have a range cooker, we would have a tiled stove) I’m sure they still have them in some of the big old houses in the UK as well. People have started using them more again, at least in the central European region because they look good and are very efficient.

Fantastic video. Really enjoying watching your blogs In Australia we take the wiper blades off the glass during snow so the rubber doesn’t stick to the glass Thank you two so much for truly great videos

Not sure about going up in balloon but more than once was woken up by that roar as balloons touched down in pasture below our house decades ago. We streaked through Austria a number of times going south and north into and from Italy. Magic, mystery and so much history including prehistory. I’d prefer just some Champaign preflight.

What a wonderful snow storm experience!!! I would do the hot air balloon, but John my other half said he would be on the floor of the basket. So good to see you two so happy and exploring! ~Cara 😊

We had just the same amount of snow in Sault Ste Marie and more to come this week. So you are getting there!! Good decision in the cabin. And yes I would do the hot air balloon in a heartbeat!

I might have done the hot air balloon ride, but I would have been terrified and instantly regretted it. Love your videos.

That heater system is a typical Austrian way of heating. Very effective. It reminds me of the first time I visited Austria looking at cuckoo clock houses and then staying in a cuckoo hotel. That stove did the whole hotel!

As one of those people who did say last time that it wasn't much snow.... Yes this is officially a lot of snow. I think you made the right call to get the cabin.

This video was amazing! That balloon ride epic! I would so do this and actually it is something that I have listed to do…when, IDK but it will happen God willing. I don’t miss snow like that at all! When I Lived in CT and this was pretty normal but hated it. So glad you guys had that cozy cabin to stay nice and warm and safe. I know you’ve been to the Dolomites but that was in summer. You should check it out now with all the snow. Plus you can do more skiing. Be safe 😍🙏🏻
