Van Life | A Simple Day in the Woods

A simple day spent mostly alone in the woods and a random ramble about creating KZread videos, feeling behind, and what I’d love to do moving forward. Thanks for being here, ya'll are the best ♡
0:30 my morning routine
3:45 just boring van chores tbh
4:54 hi i’m awkward
7:05 i feel constantly behind
8:45 slowly but surely
9:45 how i store my e-bike
12:00 nerding out on storage solutions in the van
13:00 biking trails
14:15 pretty sure this will never get old

Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐

Christian, I just came across your channel. My only regret is that I did not find it sooner. Your recent comments about your life are reflections of a life alone. You, however, have the mountains, chipmunks, rivers. sunrises, sunsets, all to cheer you along life's path. Soon, I will celebrate 81 years of life in this world. I am truly blessed with a good life, decent health and a few good friends and a God that never fails to amaze me along life's winding path. Enjoy your youth, your ability to run, walk, stand, and do all those activities that enhance your work. Far too soon many of those may change. Continue to fight for the good values in life, one, that is obviously well managed. You have your "stuff" together and never doubt that. I love your artistic work, and the narratives you add. We get to see a bit of who you are inside... Thank you for sharing your life and letting us share your world. Ron

The thing I enjoy the most about your videos is that they make me feel like I'm just hanging out with a good friend. While I’d like to see the nitty gritty of your day to day van life, I’m much more intrigued by your cinematography. You’ve got a really good eye for composition and what the camera “likes to see.” I think more of the latter will portend good things for your career as a music video director and producer. Keep at it, you’ll get there!

  • @colinkelley6493
    @colinkelley6493 Жыл бұрын

Christian, your opening shot of the mountain reflected off the lake at sunrise was/is not just thrilling but life giving. World class photography is 50% just being at the right place at the right time. And that is not easy. It is 50% all the technical decisions that have to be made. I honestly like your photography as much as Ansel Adam's, and I can't say that about anyone else. I have his books, I have been to his museum. He made a student look at at mountain for 30 seconds and write down what he saw. It was half a page. Ansel's was something like 20 pages. Christian, it was so generous of you to share that photo with us. THANK YOU! (I am guessing it was Mt Shasta and Lake Shasta, but I could be way off?) You are so mindful and thoughtful and competent, I hate to call an idea I am going to throw out there, a suggestion. But if, you found a really good printer/lithographer, and each year, you took your twelve best photographs, that you liked the best, and bundled them into a high quality calendar, I know I would pay really good money to buy it, and I am sure there are many others who would as well. Such a calendar would be a keeper. The next year I would have them framed and put up on the wall. You would be sharing the beauty, seen through your eyes, that you have been there to see. I enjoy your channel for both the excellent photography, AND for your commentary. It does not matter to me how often you post, or what you happen to be doing at any given time, or talking about, or experimenting with, because it is still you. You are honestly sharing your thoughts, evolution and growth and that is what is important to me. I am a seeker of the truth. So are you. Life is about love. Not just about loving puppies and kittens, and children, and each other. It is about loving life, and loving the mysterious beauty that surrounds it. But a person has to really see that beauty before he/she can love it. What you are doing is really important. Thank you for making my life a little bit richer and a little bit more conscious of the world around me. What you are doing is very feminine and what I am doing is very masculine. I have dedicated my life to finding a way to grow super nutritious, beyond organic, food in a sustainable way that is not at war with nature, and not only is feasible and can compete and win against industrial agriculture. I am really busy and stuck in one place. So what you are doing really helps and strengthens me. Thank you for being you.

Your challenges with the editing process, your comfort level in front of the camera, etc. are reasons why your channel is so dang good Chistian....You have SUCH an incredible eye, your images and video footage is absolutely breathtaking and getting better all the time...Whether you think so or not!!!! Your attention to detail is obvious in everything that you create, to include your van, and you are so dang adorable when you go into the details about why you put things where they are and the process you have gone thru to get to that point....You can DEFINITELY use your skills to work with artists, the technical part will keep coming, but YOUR artistic side is well and truly developed and you posses a level of talent that simply can not be taught...And as far as you looking for work as a "high end organizer", that is another one of your talents that is so obvious with your need for attention to detail and the ascetics that you seek in everything.....Not sure if you have considered hitting up professional yacht crew agencies, but you should give it a go....There are some that also place people to manage HNWI homes and it could be an avenue for you to explore....Not so much the full time managing aspect, but possibly working with the managers to streamline their clients properties....Just a thought....Keep Doing Your Thing Christian, you are awesome and a lot of people look forward to what you put out in the world....Aloha....

I can understand you very well. As photographers we feel the need to produce quality. Sometimes it feels like pressure and keeps rather procrastinating. Then again we doubt ourselves, or the meaning of our lifestyle, our work and projects. That paralyses the creative work . Sometimes it is hard to break out of this circle and we need lots of energy to kick our selves...but once we are in the flow ....I think these are the moments we live for.

For what it's worth, I don't seek out your work looking for the mundane aspects of van life. There's hundreds of van life channels for that. I, honestly, don't even see your work as a "van life" channel, really. The van is just a part of the stories you tell. There will probably come a day when the van isn't a part of your story, anymore. I don't really think that will change anything for most of your viewers. I'm here because of the skills you have with a camera, and with words, that always seem to produce something compelling. Even if you're just mostly silently moving through your day. There will always be something heartening and fascinating about watching someone following where their heart takes them. I think that's why most of us are here...to see what's possible when you step off the cliff and embrace what comes. Thanks for what you do.

I too am behind. I've been on 3 cruise ships for the past 25 days. Be easier on yourself. Look what you have accomplished already. Take a deep breathe and try to enjoy the journey. I am pretty confident we'll follow you wherever you take us in these videos. Hugs from somewhere on the internet.

I love your videos. They are relaxing and inspires me to pick up my cameras (as an amateur photographer) and continue to focus on my plan to buy a van and live in it part-time. The scenes you have been to are amazing. I can only wish right now. You are living the dream. I wish I could before the end of this year.

Whatever you do, Christian, is always excellent. I love the music, scenic videos, but also the everyday stuff. As one about to set out part time in my van, you were one who inspired me to do this and your more informational videos have been very helpful. i feel in those i got to know you so it gave your scenic videos context. do what you have time to do, and whatever moves you forward to fulfill your goals or just gives you joy! i am so thankful you share them with us! also, i am a mountain girl too..i like green (and the beach!) to see you camp in less than perfect weather is helpful to me as i set out in colder weather and don’t really want to head to the desert. thanks again for all the work and a willingness to share with us!

Christian, we appreciate all your efforts in making these videos. So many shots you have to set up the camera to catch you walking, hiking or riding and then go back to get the camera. Lots of effort to bring all of us these shots. And as everyone says, the music and scenery are perfect and majestic but what makes your videos so enjoyable to watch is just how real you are. The rambling, explaining your bike, the text inserts to describe your crispy toast, it's that authenticity that I think we all love. Also your timely facial expressions bring us a smile. We're all loving what you do, glad you are sharing it with us. Peace and love!
