I like the buildup of Hoenheim to be this unfeeling, slightly villain-like man. Just for him to be revealed to be an awkward dude.

Well, try having thousands of souls in your body, crying in anguish, screaming for a years. I don't think even the strongest man won't become an awkward guy after that. And i like Hohenheim more because of this. He is able to talk to every souls in his body to agree in helping him defeating Father.

The funniest part is he was a feisty kid like edward when he was younger but everything changed after he had a philosopher stone put into him and he began to view himself as a monster, Also he is just as strong as father and when he says hes not as strong as pride that is only true to a certain extend as he refused to use the power of the philosopher stone inside him like father does. And with his regular alchemy he is no match for pride,

Van Hohenheim is TREMENDOUSLY underrated among the FMA fans. Man's one of the best characters in the series, gotta show him some love!

never before had I realized that Hohenheim was actually aware of Ed’s presence and wanted him to hear it. I’m pretty sure that at this point none of us watchers knew what his true intentions were, so I guess this is easy to miss or misunderstand. this makes me love the show even more.

Ghost KhaledN I interpreted it in a different way. When Ed and Al found out that the thing they transmuted wasn’t actually their mother, which means they didn’t make her suffer for the second time, a great burden was taken off their shoulders.

Van hohenheim is the main protagonist of fmab. The story is just told through Edwards eye but it all really started with hohenheim and father and also ended with them.. He was a good man who just wanted to grow old and die with his family but when he found out about father‘s plan he risked his life and left the only thing he loved to face him. Hohenheim is a great character and a great father as well❤❤ love him…

ShippoAlex No. Yes The Dwarf is from Hohenheim but it was the Dwarfs plan to use the country for the philosopher stone. djef ardeur said Hohenheim was the beginning of this which is not true cause he had no intention of any of this and, like I said, was dragged into it unfortunately. Besides they took blood from him I doubt Slave 23 (now named Hohenheim) had a choice to reject their decisions.

No. One of the biggest messages in the show is that we as a species need each other to do seemingly impossible things. I dont believe Hoehenheim had the ability alone to stop father, but he was a character that was just a step ahead of the rest of the main group.

This was actually the exact opposite. He knew Edward was there and wanted him to overhear this so that he and Al could discover that they hadn't actually brought their mother back and killed her a second time, something that had been plaguing them since that day up to this point. Their relief at the discovery latter and conveying of such knowledge to Izumi who also becomes just as relieved over her child's transmutation later speaks volumes for just how much Hohenheim did with this simple question. He had to be subtle because at this point he didn't know how involved his sons would become in the turmoil that was to come and had been trying to hide his family from the horrors of the homunculus since the very beginning.

Hohenheim also does this to help his sons realize they can get their bodies back. He understands the limitations of his relationship with his sons, but also knows how he can indirectly help them. Later in the same episode, his revelation about "Trisha" allows Al to realize his real living body still exists in the Gate and can be retrieved. In other words, the Elrics brothers don't need the Philosopher's Stone (and its immoral issues) to get their original bodies back. The implications of this major revelation carries onto the last episode of the series.

Their relationship of father and sons are very awkward, the results of him haven't seen them for a long time. And it will be hard to talk to Ed as at this point, he still is angry at his father, like in most cases to a young child, they won't listen to explanation of their parents. So Hohenheim helps his kids by saying it indirectly, that the thing they transmuted was not their mother. He always act like a cold sly bastard. Only the truth is, he is just an awkward old man.

@@crimsondynamo615 no, hohenheim was trying to help Edward. He knew that Edward would not trust what he said and he knew that it's impossible to bring back souls that have moved on. He said that knowing he was listening so he would dig up the body and discover that he didn't kill his mother again. Edward says later that he had been troubled for years that if only he had known more it would have worked. He is actually relieved to find out that it's impossible, as is Alphonse and teacher
