It is interesting to note that while Father is defined by his seven sins, Van Hohenheim is greatly defined by the Seven Virtues. He fell in love with Trisha and remained loyal to her even long after her death (Chasity), he never abuses or exploits his power beyond what is necessary for the situation (Temperance), he is willing to sacrifice his own happiness for the sake of others (Charity), he is willing to put in the work to accomplish his goals (Diligence) he is willing to endure great struggle or time in the process (Patience), and despite being incredibly powerful he uses his power to help others (Kindness) and does not see himself as superior to others (Humility).

And that's how Father is the evil counterpart to Hohenheim: He is what the latter could have been if he grew too obsessed with his own power.

This scene is so bittersweet. On one hand I'm happy for Hohenheim, for he gets to spend his final moments as close to his love as possible. He knows that his sons are Strong, Capable, Intelligent and Empathetic. He's assisted in correcting the evil that addles the world and by doing so, he's found a sense of peace. On the other hand, he'll never get to be the Father, that, he so clearly, wants to be. He's proud of his children and wishes to be a part of their lives.

Compare Hohenheim's death with Father's one: -Hohenheim accepts his death with bravery and wisdom, but refuses to accept the death of his loved ones. -Father begs for his life before being dragged back to the gate he came from, being fine with killing others, but afraid of his own death. -Father is Hohenheim's match in raw power and intellect, but lacks his wisdom.

Of course, because even in real life the talking to tombstone thing has actually very little to do with the actual dead people and much more to do with the living people trying to process, their loss , grief , feelings , hopes and the idea of death , so the people who need to hear the confessions and the prayer are ironically not the dead people but the actual person who is doing the tombstone talking ! So it’s fine if Trisha didn’t hear Hohenheim’s last words , cause she had already joined the truth , so in a way she already knew , plus the only person who actually needed to hear Hohenheim’s tombstone talk …is Hohenheim !

Of course, it's an anime, and they need to inform the audience what the character is thinking and feeling, but people talking to no one for their own sake isn't exactly uncommon. Speaking out loud, even if no one is there to hear it is a common way for people to understand and come to terms with themselves, especially during emotional situations like this.

I lost my dad to covid during 2020. His lungs were shredding and he had to go through a lot. I could tell he was in pain but i didn't want him to go. My dad tried saying goodbye but his voice was to muffled by a breathing tube for him to say anything. Later i found out he made some questionable financial decisions that have made my life and my moms life a nightmare after he was gone and out of grief i hated him for it. Me and my mom about a few months later started watching anime so we could bond since i didn't get a chance to that with dad. We watched fmab soon after we started watching anime together and when hoenheims motives and love for his family was shown yet he had made very questionable decisions and mistakes it reminded me of my dad. In a way this show gave me closure due to the fact that though dads make mistakes most will try their hardest to make up for him. Im just sad my dad never got his chance Rest in peace Hoenheim Rest in peace dad

But what really made me bawl my eyes out was the scene just before this one, where Major Armstrong thanks Hohenheim for his sons, but Hohenheim gets overwhelmed because he knows he can't continue to be the father that he always wanted to be for them. He doesn't have much time left, and even though he wants to be free, he is left with the realization that he has something to live for, which is his sons. @@GSol1 Nah...FMA is way better in story and character than all of what you said. One piece has better world building but the story is kinda meh, berserk is....well berserk. AoT is really good at building hype and has the best world building out of the 4 but the ending is sucks also that not every character is important in AoT not like how FMAB which every character literally has meaning in the story

@@kikijihan8316 this is it for me. I think FMAB is set apart by how integrated its story is. It really has exactly enough to do what it needed to. Nothing in its story is wasted. There’s no filler, no arcs that feel pointless, no characters who feel like they were done wrong by the story. It all just works so well for me. This is what elevates FMAB over any other anime I’ve ever seen.

at the end of the 4 strongest fma brotherhood (pride, the dwarf in the ampoule, wrath and hohenheim) there remains only pride with a new body and no powers while many much less strong characters survive, and this makes the anime even more beautiful because you can expect anyone's death

  • @Vgamer311

Technically as far as we can tell, “Pride” actually is dead. The single soul that remains in side the vessel which Pride previously occupied could be any one of the ones in that philosopher’s stone, having essentially been reborn. Now, it’s not *impossible* that the person we see at the end really is Pride and he’s just acting innocent, but there isn’t really any strong evidence to suggest that.

Always feel this big empty void after finishing a shonen. The journey coming to an close and knowing this is where it ends. Seeing the end credits in Naruto Shippuden, watching Fairy Tail's best team leave on their Hundred Year Quest and the Elrics returning home. It's like saying goodbye to good friends when moving away.

But at the same time I'm so happy he has found peace with his past and is released from his burden and suffering he even got to die next to the love of his life this was just so bittersweet.

Can we just point out how Granie is the real MVP, she first introduced Hoenheim to Trishia, nursed Trisha during her illness, looked after the boys for a bit when she died, performed high class medical procedures on Edward twice over, buried the monster human transmutation, kept fugitives in her home and then on top of that saw her old friend again this time no longer showinng his age defying appearance, but properly dead finally. Mad.
