@@chazzkramer432 I was gonna say the same thing! There are soundboard tapes floating around from the 1975 to 1977 era that capture the “club” Van Halen era before they were signed by Warner Brothers. VH pretty much cut their teeth as a band by playing anywhere and everywhere in Southern California during those years. They had to have hundreds of cover songs rehearsed and at the ready for any requests or just to craft unique sets as they sometimes played multiple sets a night. They played their own stuff too, but playing covers was the only way to get gigs back then in the bar circuit. This ZZ Top song was a taste of their club days and it speaks to their musicianship that they dusted this one off as an audible during a major tour like that.

To everyone who thinks Michael Anthony sucks: consider that he was absolutely perfect for that band at that time. They didn't need a technical virtuoso, they needed somebody to hold the foundation of that circus down with comfortable authority and as a bonus he handled any vocal harmony that was called for. Seems to me they could've written this song; it would've felt right at home on Van Halen I. Also I'm only recently appreciating that Eddie was usually playing the straight hook of the songs through the verses and choruses and only cutting it loose during designated solos. This lineup showed us what a celebration a rock show could be. Just my two cents, guaranteed worth every penny.

That fast blues shuffle where it sounds like the beat's always accelerating -- or maybe I just want it to accelerate -- that is a powerful tool for a rock band to use. Plus, Billy Gibbons' recorded playing probably taught young Edward a thing or two about getting a fat tone partly via right-hand palm muting, and how far from the bridge you place your right hand, to emphasize certain hues in the guitar's tonal palette. Oh yeah, pick-slams onto the fretboard on "Beer Drinkers." Billy rules.

I started playing guitar two years before Van Halen (one) was released. SO glad I witnessed these guys in their prime. This video sums up everything I loved about them back then. Thank for sharing!
R.I.P. Eddie. You were a true original.
Never heard this version before. What a tribute to ZZ Top, OUR Texas premier rock and roll band to match Aerosmith, Boston and other Yankee bands. Van does a solid job as always.
I'd like to see Michael Anthony replace Dusty, only fitting that the two guitar gods of tone share killer backup vocal bassists.

Yep so true man!!!
VINTAGE Van Halen. ZZ Top would be proud.
It kind of reminds me of ZZ Top's "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers."
