Van Build Coversion Design for Second Back Seats in Promaster Sprinter Transit Vanlife Campervan

Having extra seats in a van conversion seemed like a no brainer to us. We love to share our van life experience with people who would not have a chance to otherwise. Designing our van build was fun and we knew that van life and van travel would be a ball. Our first attempt at back seats or second seats in our van were salvage seats from a Ford Transit van. These were all that was available because of Covid. They were not perfect - partly because the Ford transit seats, like the Mercedes sprinter second seats tend to be narrow. But also because I installed them looking a bit to the forward of the van. We want to be able to take people with us from time to time for day trips or maybe even out for dinner when we drive our van to another city. I’ve never wanted to have to rely others to provide for us. And there will be times when we’ll be on a road trip with another couple - not sleeping in the van but it the van build is good what a great way to travel. Beats being in a car all day. Having access to the Dometic cooler - www.dometic.com/en-us/outdoor... and the comfortable lawn chairs and even coffee tables for stops along the way really makes for a more enjoyable journey. We love being on the road and really want to be able to have others with us as well.

Greetings from the southern interior. This seat is exactly what I was looking for to use for my 159 ext. Thx for the video and rock on.

Serenity Cruiser - thanks from the northern interior !! I can tell you these fit nicely into a 159 ext. - but if 1. You have a Promaster 2. they'll be facing forward and 3. you want the bed function - check out the "1200" it's a 3 panel fold out that makes a complete bed on it's own. Because of the step up in a Promaster you can't use a front seat as a bed extension. Be well and stop back !!! Dave

Jee, you are lucky to be able to do that in BC! Here in Qubec, adding a belted double or single seat requires to be done by a Transport Canada Certified outfit (3 of them here), which are installing a ridiculously thick steel plate over the van's steel floor, making this secondary seat stronger than the front seats! We are talking about a few thousands of dollars for that job...

This is excellent and might just be the ticket for me too. I recently purchased '83 Econoline gutted cargo van with two front captain seats, but there are three of us! Currently only used as second/backup vehicle, so my 5yo has car seat up front and loves it, but eventually would love it to be camper van and would like two seats in the back so kid and wife can sit there and the kid can sleep on it also. And I don't like the idea of the older style conversion van third row bench that supposedly folds into bed, had one in previous van and was not comfortable. I wonder what other seats you came across during your research, if you don't mind sharing and saving me the time, please? Love your vids, will copy a few of them. Thanks and cheers from Wisconsin.

Hi Joeh - thanks for watching and the kind words - Being in Canada there are not many options for after market seats, if you find one at the wreckers that's usable it'll cost an arm and a leg, and the manufacturers will not sell a replacement. The Wilderness Van seats I bought I believe they have the Canadian rights. Everything else I found was in the US or Europe. Check out www.freedmanseating.com/ - these are more commercial but close to you. The ones I really wanted were from www.jmgsystemsllc.com/ - but they don't ship outside the lower 48 so for me - with the exchange on the $$$ and the freight forwarder and the customs I was looking at about $ 3000.00 a seat which is just crazy. I hope things work out for you. We'll be driving through Wisconsin May 19th and 20th ---- looking forward to seeing some of the state .... hope you'll stop back. Be well .... Dave
