Steam Controller 2
On the website, it lists some of the features for these controllers, which include:
4 Custom Buttons to assign Functions
Full Gyro Support (only when "Steam Mode" is activated)
A customization feature to only activate Gyro when a specific joystick is touched
Continuous button pressing or "Rapid Fire" mode for face buttons
Supports both Bluetooth and Wired connections
A dedicated Steam button to start big picture mode or bring Steam up
A Quick Access Menu button
Controllers are Taking Over on PC
Stats: Controller use on Steam
Since 2018, daily average controller use has tripled from ~5% to up to 15%
~42% of these controller sessions are using Steam Input
During that time, the controller landscape has changed:
59% of sessions are using Xbox controllers
26% are using PlayStation controllers
10% are on Steam Decks
As usage has grown, our team has continued working to improve and add features to enhance the controller experience for these players. Here are some of the new features we’ve shipped for Steam Input and controller users recently:
Big Picture update- complete redesign of the controller first experience on Steam, bringing the Steam Deck user experience to the big screen
New controller configurator- rethought and simplified configurator to set, manage, and edit controller bindings
Gyro aiming- overhauled and improved experience for controllers with gyro, implemented Flickstick functionality in Steam Input
Virtual menus- added support to the desktop client
PlayStation Controller support
We worked with Sony to improve support for PS controllers including DualSense Edge, and can now automatically support future 3rd party licensed PlayStation gamepads
Xbox Controller support- We shipped a driver for Windows allowing us to better support Xbox One controllers, including the rear buttons on the Xbox Elite ControllersOne of the benefits of Steam Input is that when it’s implemented in a game, players can use any one of over 300 supported controllers to play. We also recently added support for the new HORIPAD for Steam (available in Japan later this summer), and worked with HORI's team to make their controller work well with Steam Input.

    I dont know why someone or Valve just doesn't make a controller that has an identical layout to the SD without the screen. They're leaving money on the table! so many times I'm using a bluetooth controller and i'm like ughh gotta go grab the mouse to navigate and do whatever for a quick sec. They could even add a small physical keyboard at the center bottom like those attachments you can buy for xbox/ps controllers. that would literally be perfect for mouse/keyboard inputs on a controller. SOMEBODY STEAL THIS IDEA!

    The Dualsense edge has the same amount of inputs but also has a touchpad for even more inputs and it currently has the best gyro on the market. It doesn't have capacitive sticks though, but for online shooters is that really an issue? when most would want gyro to always be on. I'm still intrigued though.

    I will have to disagree with the trackpads with the Steam Controller. I own one for more than 5 years (still alive and kicking), and I use the trackpads with multiple functionalities and most of them are made readily available by the community via Steam Input. I prefer playing Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal using the trackpads of the Steam Controller than a Keyboard & Mouse these days (I'll definitely do the same thing when The Dark Ages come out), and I use the trackpads entire surface (especially edge recognition for other functions) with games like Fallout 4, SkyrimSE, Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise. And I use it on Racing Sims like BeamNG and Assetto Corsa more than any gamepads cause of its uncompromising customization. The pair of trackpads are definitely not for everyone that's given to any unconventional inputs but that doesn't mean it doesn't work on games.

    I love how customizable the Deck's controls are. If the Steam Controller 2 is as good as the Deck's controls, this is going to be the best controller ever. If it had a trackpad and the sticks are Hall Effect, that would put this right over the top for versatility and longevity. I'd gladly pay 150-200 bucks for this, since I'd very likely never have to replace it.

  • @Bootchair

    @Bootchair

    2 күн бұрын

    Many factors. Almost too much to list. The steamdeck OS is getting more efficient as time goes on. The oled screen is already at 90hz. There’s no reason to go beyond that. Sure there 144hz screens on handhelds but the power consumption is atrocious. There’s only so much space for the battery unless they start with a brand new chassis, Which won’t happen for a long time. The steamdeck from its first iteration to the latest has seen overhauls to every single component. Zen2 is still a power house and pretty conservative on battery. With the launch of zen5, and still Being on TSMC N6/N3/N4X process node while being more efficient and a chip level we may finally see an updated steamdeck with updated hardware. I wouldn’t hold my breath because prices for zen 5 are going to be expensive for a while. Were a year out minimum.

    I'm going to guess the use of PS controllers on PC has to do with people having PS for a console (FF might be on Steam but there are still JRPGs out there that aren't on PC) so they might as well use that. The other reason I'm going to guess is driving up this trend despite the software issues is the ergonomics. My three grip fingers and trigger gingers absolutely love the XBox controller, especially if I'm playing a game for hours. My thumbs are different matter as the D-Pad feels too far away. It's not a problem for the right stick but it's not like I play FPS games with a controller (well, OK, I put Warframe on 3rd person view - controllers just make melee combat easier) for hours on end, but as much as I played SF in the arcade before, I get forced to use the left stick over the D-pad because of how it feels trying to reach the D-pad. I ended up trying a GameSir T3. Triggers feel like total POS to the T4 Pro, but my left thumb doesn't feel like the D-pad is too far on fighting games and it feels fine on mecha games, but what do you expect from a $22 2.4g wireless controller. What still kinda sucks is my three grip fingers just find it way too small, which is a thing for PS4 and older. I'm guessing the PS5 controller's grip might have fixed this, but even if they haven't, it's way easier to just win fighting games on a PS controller (with my left thumb not having a problem) and take a break or at least most RPGs are slower-paced in terms of input so I just have a very loose grip.

  • @SoundToxin

    @SoundToxin

    This controller is indeed disappointing, but what it does have is the ability to have gyro and analog triggers at the same time, and back buttons supported for separate inputs from the other buttons. I have GuliKit KK2 Pro and KK3 Max, 8bitdo Pro 2, Ultimate Bluetooth, and SF30 Pro. They make good controllers but due to the way they pretend to be Xbox or Switch controllers in their various modes they have some pretty unfortunate limitations. Switch mode has gyro but digital triggers, XInput mode has analog triggers but no gyro. It's pretty much just PlayStation controllers that are able to have both, and those don't have Hall effect sticks, and there aren't many third party controllers that act as PlayStation controllers.

  • @SoundToxin

    @SoundToxin

    Күн бұрын

    @@zaghell It depends on a few things, like which stick layout you prefer (symmetrical or offset, aka playstation or xbox style), how much you care about back buttons/paddles, and if you think you would ever use macro recording/playback. To start with, the GuliKit KK3 Max looks awesome on paper but has been pretty buggy for me. The Switch mode doesn't work on my Steam Deck for some reason, and if I played wired in XInput mode I get ghost pressed, the steam/home button presses itself randomly every few minutes or so and messes me up in games and activates shortcuts, pretty much unusable if you like to play wired. I reported it to a few people but it doesn't seem like it's getting fixed any time soon. On the other hand their older KK2 Pro works quite well still. The main thing you're missing with the KK2 vs the KK3 are the 4 back buttons they added. GuliKit's controllers can record up to 10 minutes of gameplay and play it back, which can be useful in some scenarios. Like if you need to do something very repetitive you can record yourself doing it once and then let the macro loop to craft a bunch of items for you or repeatedly attack something or whatever. It's also handy if you need time to pass in a game without your Deck going to sleep since even just something like opening and closing the inventory on a loop is enough to keep it awake. The GuliKit controllers have the Xbox-style stick layout, so that's another major factor to consider. All macros and settings and configuration of GuliKit controllers are done without external software, it just uses button combos, which some people really appreciate. 8bitdo has controllers in both stick styles. There's no macro recording/playback. The Switch mode and XInput modes both work on Deck, wired or wireless. So if you play any shooters and want to use gyro aim I would probably lean toward 8bitdo. The Ultimate Bluetooth controller from them has the Xbox/Switch-style layout with the sticks. The 8bitdo Pro 2 is more Playstation-style. The Pro 2 has a very nice dpad and is good for a lot of 2D games. Platformers, fighting games, etc. The Ultimate Bluetooth and Pro 2 both have two back buttons, compared to the GuliKit KK3's 4 buttons and the KK2's 0 back buttons. You will need the "Ultimate Software" app to reconfigure 8bitdo controllers to assign the back buttons and such. 8bitdo recently revised all(?) their old controllers to have Hall effect sticks. The Ultimate Bluetooth was their first to have them. So if you go for a Pro 2, make sure it's the new version with Hall effect sticks. Check description, pictures of the box, reviews, etc. to be sure. So for PS-style sticks I would recommend the 8bitdo Pro 2. For Xbox-style probably either the GuliKit KK2 Pro or 8bitdo Ultimate Bluetooth, unless you never play wired and you think the extra back buttons on the KK3 are worth it. Bugs with the KK3 aside, I would say they're all pretty good controllers, and they all have Hall effect sticks now. I've used them on PC/Deck and Switch, even used some on a modded Xbox 360 and they work pretty well. Also, for all of these controllers, the firmware gets updated over time fixing issues, you'll probably want to update them as soon as you get them.

    @@SoundToxin Thanks for your very informative reply again. As I thought, it's between those two Chinesium companies. Pretty embarrassing for the big companies like Logitech, no innovation, 10 years behind in every peripheral. You made me decide to get the Ultimate, I don't see myself care about macros on a controller or back buttons, I mostly care about it being reliable, long lifespan, xbox style layout and not break the bank.

    +1 on keyboard & mouse for FPS! I tried Borderlands 2 on a PS3 once - what a disaster (my ability - not the quality of the game). My daughter plays COD on her PS4, but I am truly awful with the thumbsticks on any of the shooters...

  • @SoundToxin

    You can't play shooters well with just the analog sticks (they're neither fast enough nor accurate enough for aiming), but with modern controllers that have gyro you get the speed and accuracy of a mouse in a controller, and with control styles like "flick stick" that repurpose the right stick for fast turns, you can even surpass keyboard + mouse in some ways. Splatoon is the best example of official gyro aim working well. It's still not very popular in games. It doesn't help that Xbox controllers don't have gyro. They're holding everything back. Even on systems with controllers that have gyro, not all the games choose to implement it as an option. Fortnite has both gyro and flick stick and is available on most platforms in case you wanted to try it out. It takes a little getting used to.

    Bro, just because you don't use the steam deck touch pads doesn't mean that they never worked right. In minutes I can literally find hundreds of people who play on the steam controller specifically because it is the only real choice if you want to play on trackpads.

    The 60% XBox controller figure may be inflated by DS4Windows and/or DSX usage, basically "hiding" the PS4/5 controllers as XBox controllers where Steam is concerned. It's not an issue on Linux, but under Windows it works considerably better that way.

    Third party controllers very commonly show up as Xbox 360 controllers in their XInput mode, as does any arcade controller using GP2040-CE or HayBox firmware. So yeah, I wouldn't trust any stats on this stuff.
