    Unfortunately, those bans are more common than you might think. I own a really old account that was created around 2014, though I'm not exactly sure of the date. I used to trade there very frequently. That's all I did - never selling anything for cash or buying anything off someone for cash. Can you guess what happened after a few months of constant trading? I was trade banned. The reason? This account has been reported for scamming other people, etc., etc. I'm surprised that people are only now noticing this. Steam support is severely lacking, and it has been for a really long time. This is mainly because Steam, to my knowledge, outsources this work to other companies, and most of the time, the people working there don't really care.

    To clarify, yes, I did try appealing my ban. Actually, I attempted a few times over the years, but I never progressed beyond receiving their copied-and-pasted responses. It feels like they simply didn't care at all. I actually got banned (I think twice) and couldn't send any more tickets for a month. Love you, Valve.

    Valve know this that's why u are actually not owning ur account and everything on ur account legally belongs to valve (u agree with this in terms of service part). This seems like a cruel solution but it helps valve to dodge some sketchy situations like this one (they know guy is involved in working with scammers so they bad him without having to sue with him) or u cant sue valve for changing how skin looks and etc, I guess u get the idea. Legal terms are so fucked and differ from country to country so valve rarely wants to integrate with them and I honestly can't blame them, like nobody really wants to fuck with taxes on unboxed knife.

    The second line in Kal's Support ticket to Hodshy, after the one you highlighted, is the line I think that is currently affecting Syncho. His trades look one sided since he is likely prominently a cash trader, steam is not supporting him since the transactions took place out side of the steam market?

  • @toilet_cleaner_man

    @toilet_cleaner_man

    That could play a role, but Valve knows that people do third-party/p2p trading. They don't directly support it, and they never will, but literally every single trader would be banned if they simply took 2,000+ trades with only one party receiving items as a scam. What is more likely is that he (unknowingly) "cashed out" an account (or several) that was stolen, which would be next to impossible for him to know for 2 reasons: 1) People with inventories they don't use generally sell the whole inventory at once for a bulk sum, with many players who quit in 2014-16 having skins now worth thousands; and 2) Syncho does not run KYC checks with his clients, so he does not know if he is talking to William "billyjenkins2009" Jenkins (the legit owner of the account), or Igor "fr0stedw1sd0m" Malenkovich (the dude who just hijacked the account). Inevitably, this is just a reality check that cutting corners in a grey market is an excellent way to lose everything. You do not own your steam items, You do not own your steam account, play with fire, you will be burned.

Especially when you live in a customer rights friendly area like the EU or Australia. "Give us money for some digital goods" is a legally binding contract and if one party renegs on their side of the deal they might have broken civil law.

    What do you think about financial freedom? Do you think someone who wants to buy contraband should intrinsically (by nature of being a human) deserves the choice to try to buy it? I would assume no, because you do not seem to be in support of a smaller government if you are pro KYC. So then do you think people who buy or sell fake contraband (or simply just scam) also deserve the same punishment or any punishment and why?

  • @jort93z

    @jort93z

    @@juliannowak5696 I mean, if they chose to knowingly buy contraband they are simply a criminal in my book. What is "fake contraband" to you? You mean like, fake goods? Like a fake rolex? Selling fake goods is, at least in my country, not a crime, just a civil offense. There is no punishment, but the rightsholder could demand compensation for lost revenue. I guess that seems reasonable. And I am not sure what that has to do with KYC.

    The issue isn’t them “not helping him” it’s they banned him for basically no reason and didn’t elaborate at all. I understand they don’t need a full judicial system but to not provide any details or what transaction it’s for etc is utterly unacceptable and deeply unethical. Seriously what is wrong with these companies? It’s beyond insane and totally not okay to not provide any details or explanation, you have some obligation to explain and justify the decision. Just another example of steam and valve being deeply unethical and dishonest organizations. Love their games but the company is verging on being a truly evil organized crime group factoring in everything they’ve been doing lately
