I have done the Prolon 5 day fasting mimicking diet and having the prescribed food made it possible to tolerate the diet because extreme hunger wasn't a factor. I believe in Dr. Longo's research.

Now in our mid 70s my wife and I have been doing our version of this FMD diet roughly every three months since 2015 with great results. She no meds at all, me 8mg of candesartan only now. We are slim, trim, and mostly follow Dr Gundry''s dietary advice day to day. We among several known neighbours are also the healthiest. Efforts to encourage them to use these practices have been a total failure despite the evidence it would greatly assist their ailments. Go figure.

On VL's comment about not being a ketogenic diet it nevertheless raises ketones and lowers glucose, alot. I've done the official FMD and my own version based on the macro breakdown and in all case my ketones went up to clinical levels (.0.5 mmol) in the 2 to 3 mmol range by day 3 of 5. I take this as just a marker of low insulin. My glucose went down to 70s from high 80s/low 90s. Highly recommended. But do before and after blood work. And when you come out of transition to a good diet and TRE if you can. I did the FMD as two meals/day about 8 hours apart, so a form of TRE combined with FMD.

In his book, Longo shows how to do a DIY version of the FMD. Very easy. I do it once a year.

Yes, I designed my own after doing the official version 3 times. Works very well - Using ketone and glucose levels as markers my version gave same results.

Doing my first round of FMD. Primarily interested in anti cancer. Wondering if alternating the FMD with a vegan KETO would stress cancer cells more than just FMD. Example, month 1, FMD, month 2 Ketogenic diet (5 days).

I wonder if he has looked at senescent cells? Are they reduced as in senolytic therapies?

I don't know how people do it. I'm lucky if I can fast for half a day. Fortunately, I don't mind exercise and my eating habits are improving. I just love to eat!

I find that carbohydrates cause hunger. When eating low carb there is much less hunger.

Use FMD before chemo. Listen to Longo’s interviews on fasting and MS, diabetes, cancer. Those from several years ago on Found My Fitness podcast are my favorites. Consider finding a functional medicine doctor and nutritionist who understands **your cancer** - dietary recommendations differ for various cancers - Use both traditional and functional medicine - if you are inclined. Honestly you have a better chance than with one alone. Good luck to you -

Did he say, penguins are mammals?

It's a bit vague. Something like, "mammals can go long periods of fasting, LIKE these emperor penguins." So the way I read it is that; mammals can fast like penguins. Rather than penguins are mammals (which is incorrect of course, they are birds).

Water fasting is free! Better than free as you don't buy the food. The commercialization of the FMD is truly obnoxious medical capitalism at it's worst.

Longo used to talk about fasting in his earlier talks. It seems he has completely shifted to talking about his fasting mimicking diet; making sure he reminds everyone that he takes no money from the company prolon

But cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy did not want to water fast and found it very difficult to commit to such a regime. What suits you might not suit others and your sneering dismissal of a protocol that may help people at a difficult time in their lives is just as obnoxious.

Would water fasting/ close to zero calories be more beneficial?

He claimed in his earlier papers that a three day water only fast was equal to the 5 day FMD. Better only in that you got the same benefits in only 3 days.

I used to think the same thing. I did water fasting for one week and it was mentally/emotionally challenging--it took mountains of building up to for me (and I never could do it again). I think if I had a serious disease that would be enough to help me through the head challenge. I have done the FMD two times now, and while it's a bit unfun on a couple of days, it's sooooo much easier. Also, you can DIY it if you are on a budget!
