Valley of the Dolls - It's Impossible - Patty Duke 's own voice

Фильм және анимация

Since Patty Duke was playing a role based on Judy Garland, it was felt necessary to dub her for this Andre Previn number.
Gail Heideman sang for her in the film, but here's Patty's own vocal, taken from her album "Patty Duke Sings Songs From Valley of the Dolls and Other Selections".

All we supposedly know about Judy's short tenure on the Valley set is what Patty was told by Judy, not a reliable source of information. According to Liza, Judy hadn't read the book, so she didn't know Helen Lawson was a bitch. Judy could not or would not play Helen as written. A nice Helen Lawson would have made no sense. Patty knew and admitted that as much as she wanted to sing, she just couldn't get the technique. She tried so hard and had all of the desire, but she was a better actress than a singer. It made the washed up bar scenes and her pill addiction scenes all the more believable. Substance abuse is a death sentence for the voice, especially when combined with cigarettes and vomiting.

    I admire Patty Duke (although I don't admire her performance as Neely), but she certainly wasn't the singer Neely was (at least in the book). The dubbed version isn't much better; but, as Jacqueline Susann herself said, "this movie is a piece of shit." Indeed.

  • @lbputzer

    Personally, I always thought Susann was in no position to look down on the film, as her original novel was trash to begin with. As the film aged, at least Patty Duke & Barbara Parkins were able to acknowledge & appreciate being part of such an unintentionally bad film, and were able to laugh at their own work. To her dying day, Susann likely thought her book was literature, which is more embarrassing than the camp film itself.

    @@josephhernandez1885 You know everyone, some of this just isn't true. Patty said in her book that she "knew she couldn't sing it like a Professional singer but that she felt the deterioration was important to show". She said in her book that it "was decided that her singing voice would be dubbed" and that "she was fine with it". However, she has also stated in later years that she was angry that they insisted on dubbing her. So, keep in mind that in those days 'dubbing' was hush-hush - and Patty had records out previous to this movie that did pretty well with the Teen crowd. She could 'carry a tune' but no, her own voice would not be believable for the Neely O'Hara character.

  • @Autostade67
    @Autostade679 ай бұрын

    Gertrude Lawrence only managed to hold her warbly voice on pitch about fifty percent of the time - if that. And Fanny Brice was not known for anything approaching bel canto (Ironic then that the two ladies whose pitch is so perfect that they can use portamento as artistic effect - Streisand and Andrews - ended up playing them in contemporary biopics) - this did not keep them from being massive stars in their generation - so it's not out of the question that Neely COULD become a huge hit with inconsistent timbre and pitch, were she to have that certain 'je ne sais quoi' that makes a star a star (and if it were, say, 1946, not 1967). Whether or not Duke had that (I love her performance in the film precisely because she is so 'off' precisely because her formidable abilities wer given no 'off' switch) - is open for debate, but one can at least consider that using her own voice for this scene wouldn't have been out of the question.

It also killed Barbara Parkins's chance at a motion picture career. After Valley of the Dolls Parkins was relegated back to low budget TV films and roles. And what about Susan Hayward? Streisand would never consider taking this part. By the time Susann's book was released (let alone the casting of the film at an even later date), Barbra had already starred solo in two primetime TV specials, made a splash as the star of "Funny Girl" on Broadway, released multiple hit albums, and had already committed to star in the film version of FG. VOTD was pretty much an ensemble cast, with Neely sharing the story with Anne, Jennifer, and Helen. Streisand's ego (particularly at that time) would never permit sharing the spotlight with other leading roles. It wasn't until well into the 2000s ("Meet the Fockers") that she finally deigned to take an ensemble part.

    Judy was playing a part based on Ethel Merman. Patti was playing a part based on Judy Garland. Judy was fired because she wasn’t emotionally able to perform in front of the campus, sadly. Judy had read the book before she signed on to do the movie she knew exactly what she was signing up for. Patti’s voice, Is so untrained and she is so clearly not a singer that for her to use this version in a movie portraying a singer who rockets overnight to success because of her great voice, would be ridiculous beyond anything. For heaven sake’s she is presented with a special Grammy because of how fantastic her voice is and this is only a year or two after she made her initial success the Neely character had to have a fantastic singing voice. As it is the dubbed voice wasn’t good enough either but it was certainly better than this awful stuff that Patti dude was doing. I love the movie and I love Patti but she cannot sing and her albums were a joke.

    Valley of the Dolls... trash. Patti Duke still trying to get the stench of TV acting out of her system and does not succeed. I keep expecting to hear the theme song to the Patti Duke Show every time Patti makes an appearance in Valley. Patti pulled out every acting trick she used on her TV show, much to the dismay of the director, Mark Robson. And poor Barbara Parkins, another TV star trying to crossover to movie stardom doesn't quite make the grade as she succumbs to all the acting tricks she used in Peyton Place as well. Movie acting requires subtle characterization, not overt TV acting. And don't get me started on Susan Hayward. She must have needed the money badly to accept such a role. Susan does not sing but she attempted to lip sync with the gestures of an out of work drag queen. Thank god someone had the sense not to make Susan lip sync to Judy Garland's recording of I'll Plant My Own Tree. Garland as everyone knows was fired from Valley. Judy would have been great in the part, more believable, but she could not draw out the bitch quality required for the part, at least according to Marc Robson. No wonder Jackie Suzanne walked out in the middle of the first premier screening of the film.
