When Val says he'll get emotional talking about exchanging laughter and the audience laughs but Conan gets it completely- I love that moment
The autobiographical documentary Val released a few years ago is so good. Highly recommend. It’s narrated in the first person by Val’s son who sounds very much like him.

What makes it even more epic is the fact it heavily utilizes "home footage" Val recorded, throughout his life. The man has a VAULT of recordings which lend perspective to the whole story. I always liked Val Kilmer, even in the '95 batman flick, but I gained SO much respect for him after watching the documentary.
It's sad to watch this old clip and you can hear Kilmer's voice going. Cancer is a bitch when it drags on and on. People can be brave and have perspective, but there is no "battle" with cancer. It just takes a piece at a time. Even if driven into remission, it takes a piece of the person (mastectomy, diminished endurance, stange immune problems) every time.

Nice, I gonna rewatch it soon. It's been too long since I saw it last. Oh, I have it on dvd and the commentary is one of the most hilarious I've ever heard. It's practically It's own movie almost as Val is lit up with enthusiasm throughout much of it. (Partly to the sometimes annoyance of Robert Downey Jr. and Shane Black who were quite a bit more low key throughout the commentary.) He's cracking jokes left and right. He even comes up (if I remember right) a contest, or some kind of game for the audience to play along while they watch. I can't remember exactly as it's been at least 5 years since I heard the commentary. I might listen to it again after I rewatch. It was a delight to hear him so lit up with energy and enthusiasm. He may as well have been Madmartigan in that commentary.

I think it is the Nordic accent lol! I can barely hear it, but I am a historian so I did a quick poke around. He’s only 3rd gen American on mom’s side, grandma was born in Sweden. He grew up in CA but mom grew up in Indiana, prob in a community with lots of Swedes & Norwegians & Danes. You don’t hear it that far south anymore, but I know plenty of 2nd & 3rd gen Nordic ppl in Montana who still have the accent. We don’t have it bad like Fargo, and that’s prob Norwegian?, but I even got teased about it in college & im not Scandinavian but I’m from a town that is. Until Jette Johnson, pronounced Yetta Yohnson, arrived and then they heard the OG accent. You all sent us your grumpiest but hardest working people in the 20s-40s, from Wisconsin to Eastern Montana along the Canadian border is Scandinavian country & the home of Ole & Lena jokes, which technically are bigoted but your people have done verrrry well here.

@@montananerd8244 I find accents fascinating. I used to think that every state had their own accent(s) but that's not true. Accents are regional and can encompass more than one state. I think American movies have caused lots of confusion in this area. They use a generic southern accent when in fact, there are many types of southern accents. One accent that has gone by the wayside in movies is the trans-atlantic accent. I enjoy listening to this accent from the early Hollywood talkies era. However, I have never known anyone personally that spoke with that accent. I wonder if this particular accent started in the Northeast US and Hollywood honed it? Anyway, I liked your perspective on the Nordic-American accent from the viewpoint of being an historian. Thank you.
@eldorados_lost_searcher
26 күн бұрын
@@vickyabramowitz2885 The Mid-Atlantic accent was an "artificial" one developed in the northeast for boarding schools in the region. It's supposed to be a cross between an American idea of an English accent, and a general New England accent. Because of its association with the upper crust of society, many actors in early Hollywood began to use it when playing those roles, and then kept using it once it became part of their brand. It was also great for getting dialogue out quickly because of its clipped, precise nature. But because no one place has a "native" Mid-Atlantic accent, once it became less fashionable it ceased to be taught, and eventually fell by the wayside. There's a few articles and videos out there on the topic, if you're interested in people explaining it better and pulling information from research, instead of from half-forgotten memory. Take care.
@vickyabramowitz2885

@@eldorados_lost_searcher Thank you for informing me that it's the Mid-Atlantic accent. I have to say I miss hearing it in movie dialogue but it had its hayday and then it faded into the past. Its part of history now but at least its been preserved in numerous classic Hollywood films. I feel inspired to do some research on it now. Thank you for your input.

Cancer can linger and build slowly and not be noticed, it was found and they started working on it after this. Sore throat, well I was shouting the same three lines for 6 hours yesterday, grab a menthol drop, I gotta shout 7 more hours today. Touch of pneumonia? Jab, pill, cough drop then back to swimming with a chick 20 years younger than me for half the day. That cough is getting bad, 3 months from now after I'm done shooting in Hawaii I'll make an appointment.

I prefer my roast beef from Rax, when I can. Did you ever have any food from them? I thought they disappeared entirely back in the mid 90s or so. It turns out they still exist, just not nearly as many locations as they once had. Yeah I feel they blow Arby's out of the water quality wise. Unfortunately since the pandemic there is now even less locations, around maybe 5 left since I last looked. I've been to the one that's about 45 minutes or so outside of Chicago. It's in Joliet, IL. It amazingly is like stepping into a time capsule as it looks exactly like the one did we had in my hometown, right up til when it closed in the 90s. Actually I think I liked Sir Beef better than Arbys too. I'm not sure how widespread those were. The one where I was living at, at the time went under a year or so after I moved to that city. (Forgive me if I don't offer that info up. It's a bit too close to where I am now.)
