The Vacheron Constantin Overseas is a full-fledged rival to the Patek Philippe Nautilus and the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. Compared to its two famous luxury watch rivals, the Overseas Self Winding is packed with innovations that improve its fit, value, and durability (4500V/110A-B128). This is a 41mm steel sports watch that represents best-in-class quality and features even at its preowned price of up to $38,000.
Launched in 1996, the original Vacheron Constantin Overseas drew from the design of the company's own 1977 reference 222 sports watch. A third-generation Overseas watch collection debuted in 2016, and that was the first time Vacheron's sports watch truly equalled the pedigree of its primary competition from Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet. The Overseas Self Winding in today's episode incorporates features never before offered on an Overseas; a manufacture movement; Geneva hallmark status; a display caseback. Moreover, with a retail price of $22,500 as of 2022, the latest generation of the Overseas automatic is priced competitively.
The Overseas automatic is packed with impressive details. A manufacture caliber 5100 automatic movement includes a 60-hour power reserve, and its poincon de Geneve finish sits on display beneath a sapphire caseback. Despite the absence of a soft-iron cage, the movement is protected from magnetic fields of up to 25,000 a/m by a paramagnetic ring that site unseen beyond the edge of the display window. Each Overseas 4500v includes a screw-down crown and a water resistance rating of 150 meters. Among competing luxury watch models, only the hulking Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver has a deeper water resistance rating.
Vacheron Constantin designed the Overseas' bracelet to be second-to-none in quality. Finish of the steel links and clasp is as good as anything built by other holy trinity watch brands, the independent watch brands, and A. Lange & Sohne. Each Overseas bracelet includes a quick-release tab that permits rapid swapping between the bracelets and the two accessory straps (rubber and leather) that are included with each stainless steel model. All of the links of an Overseas bracelet are removable, and this guarantees precise sizing for any wrist. Moreover, each side of the deployant clasp includes a micro-adjustment feature for fine tuning the fit of the watch.
Today's featured watch is the blue dial version of the Overseas Self Winding. Its glossy blue dial base is the products of a polished metal dial that has been evenly coated with several layers of translucent blue lacquer. All of the hands, hour indices, and the Vacheron Constantin logo are fashioned from 18-karat white gold.

I always wanted to have a regular feature with high-grade production values, but it couldn't come at the expense of the 5-6 minute reviews. I never want this to become like the watch channels that release four highly edited videos per month; this channel is an archive and a resource. Collector's Guide gives me an outlet to produce better model-reference videos without slowing the publication schedule to a crawl. We lost and needed to replace a member of the video staff who was responsible for post-production of the Collector's Guide videos, so that's why I hadn't posted one of these in a while. Best, Tim

I asked about the 4500V in blue, and they said "give us a couple of days." 4 days later my watch arrived. MSRP, which at the time (late 2019) was $18,900. The astronomic price increases since then have been astonishing. They have dropped significantly since the end of February - almost by 50% from dealers who actually want to move their inventory.

I have trouble believing this. Many, many companies have implemented hacking seconds without undue wear and tear to watch movements. Patek made similar claims about wearing parts before admitting that hacking isn't a problem and launching it broadly. Rolex has been making hacking movements for 51 years, and we've never encountered a shaved balance wheel or stripped threading due to a hacking mechanism. Companies that worry about wear on contact components just use a piece of delrin, hair, or rubber for the balance brake. VC didn't put a hacking mechanism in the 5100 solely because Patek didn't have one in the 324 at the time the Overseas III was being designed. Since 2019, Patek has been replacing the 324 with the 26-330, which does include hacking. Best, Tim

Collectively, I love it! But with every watch, one can always see what they would have done and not done differently. And to that, I am no exception. I love the blue and brown dials, the interchangeable bracelet and straps, the box, the case and bracelet shape, etc. Conversely, I’m not fond of the sub-minute indices on a non-chronograph watch. The name “Overseas” implies that it’s a watch for a world traveler. And so why not make the most basic model a four-handed GMT? Replace the sub-minute indexed outer scale with a fixed GMT scale (no need for a bezel to rotate). Even better yet - place screwed down push buttons at 1:30 and 4:30 to adjust the twelve hour hand with. My 2¢ anyways…

To buy and keep? Yes. Could it be worth less in two weeks or two months? Yes. It's not going to be worth less than $39K in 2030 or 2035, so buying for the long haul isn't a concern. Day trading watches -- or anything resembling it -- isn't a secure path to profit for most buyers. We have a whole floor of our building where people do nothing but track buy/sell prices from day to day. Most collectors aren't set up to operate like that, so... buy and hold. Best, Tim

Brilliant quality, a sublime dial, but crudely over-branded, too large for any elegance (unless you're The Rock) and complete with Richemont qr strap gimmick, which makes the lugs and bracelet needlessly vulnerable to wear. This is a weak criticism. Patek Philippe, FP Journe, Philippe Dufour and many other incredibly high quality movements do not hack. It is incredibly violent, especially at that scale and precision, to slam a lever across the escapement to stop the balance wheel. If you want ultimate time keeping precision for referencing against the atomic clock you better save yourself the grief and get a digital Casio or a battery powered quartz. As soon as you set any mechanical watch it will be off by +/- 0-20 seconds every day as well. Thiery Stern once said “if we wanted Patek watches to hack, they would hack.” and if Francois Paul Journe cares more about not disturbing the balance wheel, protecting it from unnecessary shock over its life, I’m perfectly good with other watches not hacking too.
