Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time vs Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Patek Philippe vs Vacheron Constantin: Aquanaut Travel Time vs Overseas Dual Time; this battle rages across four time zones! Today on Versus, Tim Mosso compares dual time luxury watches in order to determine the ultimate high horology travel watch. Two stainless steel standards with impeccable pedigrees and full-time wrist potential will vie for watch buyer approval and the win in our latest Versus watch comparison.
The Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time 5164A-001 bowed at Baselworld 2011. As a complication for which the Patek Philippe Nautilus model line had no answer, the 5164A helped the relatively young Aquanaut collection move out from beneath the shadow of its older brother. The Aquanaut Travel Time retains the 120-meter water resistance of the core 5167A, but the Travel Time adds a second independent time zone, dual day-night displays, and a clever system for adjusting the reference time.
Patek Philippe equips the Travel Time with a rubber composite strap that matches the “geosphere” cut of the Aquanaut dial. The watch includes a full stainless steel deployant clasp for security on the wrist. The 5164A case isn’t as finely detailed as that of the Nautilus, but it does feature strong lines, full lugs, and robust crown guards. Even better, the triggers for the travel time function blend seamlessly into the lines of the case.
Each Aquanaut Travel Time includes a dial with a “geosphere” cut and a metallic gradient fade. The silver metallic gleam of the center dial fades nearly to black at the outer edge. White gold Arabic numerals permit easy reading of time, and large amounts of Super Luminova paint are applied to enable easy reading at night. The radial date display and dual AM/PM displays permit rapid reading of both local and reference time zones. The skeleton hour hand for the reference time zone can be hidden behind the solid local hour when a second time zone is not required.
The Patek Philippe manufacture caliber 324 SC FUS is an automatic movement with a 35-45 hour power reserve. It includes both a free-sprung Gyromax balance and a Spiromax silicon hairspring. The movement is adjusted in six positions and bears the Patek Philippe seal; both precision and finish are commensurate to Patek Philippe’s reputation.
Vacheron Constantin launched its third generation Overseas model line at SIHH in 2016. The Overseas sports watches have become a major attraction to younger watch buyers, and the generation three models were designed to elevate the Overseas to the level of Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe. This Overseas Dual Time was part of a follow-up series that debuted in 2018.
With a 41mm stainless steel case, the Overseas Dual Time is more versatile than its hulking proportions suggest. On the wrist, the integration of case and bracelet results in a seamless appearance without ergonomic compromises. This steel model features standard accessory clasps in leather and rubber, a deployant clasp in steel for the straps, and a full stainless steel bracelet. Quick-release lugs enable rotation between these options without any resort to strap tools.
Vacheron Constantin’s Overseas Dual Time can be ordered with several dial colors, and case metals, but this steel example with silver dial represents the most popular combination. The silver sunburst dial features blackened hands and indices for easy reading. Unlike the Patek Philippe, the Overseas Dual Time’s reference time zone hand cannot be hidden when not in use, and the day-night indicator relates to the reference time zone only.
Inside the case, Vacheron has equipped the Overseas Dual with a manufacture caliber 5110DT. Previous generations of the Overseas employed F. Piguet, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and Girard-Perregaux calibers, but the third generation uses in-house movements almost exclusively. This automatic caliber includes a 60-hour power reserve, the Geneva Hallmark, and five-position adjustment. The Overseas Dual Time employs a screw down crown in order to achieve 150-meter water resistance. Despite the sapphire display caseback, caliber 5110 DT boasts 25,000 amperes per meter antimagnetism thanks to a paramagnetic ring around the case.

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time (5164A-001) features a 40.8mm stainless steel case surrounding a black embossed dial on a brand new black Tropical rubber strap with a stainless steel deployant buckle. The watch also measures 10.3mm in thickness and 46.8mm from lug-to-lug.
The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time (7900V/110A-B333) features a 41mm stainless steel case surrounding a silver dial on a stainless steel bracelet with folding buckle. The watch also measures 13.1mm in thickness and 49mm from lug-to-lug.

What a fantastic showdown and your coverage! I was looking for exactly this comparison. Thank you Tim and what a great commentary voice you have!
Great program - great images of both pieces side by side - nothing better then seeing them both at once. VC would be my choice for sure. Thanks Tim .
VC with the blue dial would be my choice
Knockout delivered by VC! I love the Overseas- my favorite design from the holy trinity.

Sergey Zerkin Lange and Journe make a small number of watches compared to what VC, AP, and Patek do, is that right? You have to consider quantity in the equation don’t you?

@@golfbuddy1969 no, why ? What does quanitiry have to with any thing? Plus ap is one trick pony .. with terrible movements ... that break and cost 5 k to repair .. I love vacheron.. but it's hard to justify any watch from their catalogue:( the market has always better and more interesting watches for any given price

Sergey Zerkin yes I understand the skepticism on your part... but when you are building very few watches, and very few models, you can give them more attention than a manufacturer that is doing multiples.

@@golfbuddy1969 not at all .. Rolex makes the best watches and they make millions of them .. they don't break... Ford Henry made the best cars thya never broke .. he made millions of them ...while go buy Maserati... youbhear people only complaining .. go on whatuseek you see the most complainers from vc .. and those are not 8 k watches like Rolex.. those are 25 and plus watches.. sure the movment is rather new .. but it's not an excuse
love that Aquanaut, but the Overseas has grown on me a bit over the years (I still like all the other Genta technicals more). Kinda wish there was a no-date option to make it more practical as a secondary watch. Either way, the Overseas jumps from looking the part of the Aquanaut to the Nautilus rather swiftly. The two extra straps (leather and rubber), in addition to the bracelet, make for an excellent staple watch. edit: dang, and it has a Geneva Hallmark, and is antimagnetic. Excellent watch.
PP have it for me, very good comparison and analysis by Tim.
Price update - $18-20K for Vacheron has increased to $30k I think.

Pushing $40k for blue dial now too 👍
I've never understood the allure of the Aquanaut. The caliber is decidedly nothing special and the fact that I have to cut the strap to make it fit (with no ability to adjust on the fly) and can only make the fit tighter over time boggles my mind at this price level. The VC is at least an order of magnitude better than the Aquanaut unless the buyer simply must have Patek written on their dial.

The Aquanaut was always the budget companion to the Nautilus
Love that Vacheron! Awesome review, thanks!
Patek is my grail as a brand in general but I agree completely with you Tim on this one, the VC, no contest. Thanks for another, as usual great review!
Well put as usual however, despite the great secondhand value of the VC, one seems to force himself to love it because of the sheer value on offer but even on my larger wrist it is just overwhelming, and I did try on the blue dial variant which as an object is absolutely gorgeous but as a daily wearer feels off... thus the used prices, especially in HK. Too bad, it could have been the ultimate watch. I’m actually awaiting this Patek at the moment.
I’m a sucker for symmetry on a dial, and appreciate the PP for that, however the Overseas v3 has been my favourite luxury sports watch since release, and the 9 o’clock indicator and 4 o’clock pusher just aren’t enough to change that in this case. That being said, it is my third favourite Overseas behind the 3 hand date (my grail), and Chronograph (reverse panda specifically).
That hidden travel time hour hand wins it for the PP in my book. Best method for tracking two time zones on the market IMO. Also love this thinner case and that rubber strap looks perfect on it. I'm going Patek
What a verse video...... a hands down for VC Oversea!!!!!
The Aquanaut is very nice but the VC is just stunning and one I would love to own.
I choose the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time over the Patek Philippe Aquanaut. I think Vacheron Constantin design is more beautiful. I like the Vacheron easy changeable big Maltese cross bracelet, I like VC case shape, dial and the open case back showing the compass sun rotor. I like the VC manly big size.
Should compare an aquanaut to a breguet marine.
VC for me but second gen is more like my budget although I prefer the third. More elegant , well if you need elegance in a sports/tool watch?
VC's dial and bracelet beat out PP. To P or not to P. That is the question. 🤔 Not to P. 😁👍
i'll take bracelet watch over strap any day any night
Vacheron totally owns Patek in every way

It’s a shame that I don’t have more than two wrists. lol
I have this very same Overseas! I cannot take it off! And I use all 3 straps! What a bonus! The dial never ceases to impress. I know it’s no Patek but the movement fits the case and it is Geneva Seal. It’s a world class watch. Do I still want a Patek? Sure. I’m not dumb. But hey I could use both and sell a Rolex to make room!

VC is no Patek , VC is VC with long history and pedigree!
VC easy win - the more I see and handle the VC overseas the more I like it. I prefer this Naughty, Overseas then RO in that order
I prefer the dial of the VC. There is something I don’t really like in the Aquanaut. I definitely prefer the Nautilius line.
I'll go Aquanaut. The extra pusher and AM/PM indicator kill the VC OS for me. Not a radial date guy.
I’ve never been a great fan of the Aquanaut, but I actually like this variation, very slim for what it offers. Certainly more than this 3rd gen VC Which I still think is not as nice as the 2nd gen. And very generic looking compared to the Patek. The only thing on the VC I like better is the bracelet design, which I still think is one of the best out there.
While the patek has a cleaner dial, the VC wins for me. More strap options, longer power reserve, better dial and cheaper. VC wins this going away - just with the bracelet alone.
Very good watches patex Philippe y vacheron Constantin the best watches the wold
I like the PP better (aesthetically), but I don’t like PP, particularly the aquanaut (worn exclusively by engineers who rock running shoes with mom jeans). For that reason I’m team VC.
Price point, availability, and second hand prices, VC sure. But baring all those uncontrollable points and based simply on design, beauty, and art? PP please.
Vacheron by a mile that rubber design is the worst in the industry after you cut the strap for your wrist that’s it if you want to sell the watch to someone with a larger wrist you need a new strap and it isn’t cheap
The pp 5164R is my all time grail
The fit and finish of the Aquanaut doesn’t look like PP quality.
I love the Vacheron but I think the winner is the PateK. The aquanaut does not look as dressy or as intense as the overseas, the dial is simpler to read and the hour changing feature is extremely useful
I would honestly get the vacheron, never really like the grenade dial of the aquanaut. Too bad it is next to impossible getting both watches thru the AD.
100% agree - forget hype the VC is MUCH better all round
vc for sure but in blue dial
PP Aquanaut for me please🥇🏆
The VC Overseas all day, my grail, the PP Aquanaut disappears into the ether next to the VC Overseas.
PP anytime its an eye catcher. VC looks more similar to grand seiko
that patek strap blows.
I picked Patek.
Overseas for sure. Those pushers on the PP look weird and are not needed.
Aquanaut by a mile. It has so much character and is executed with absolute elegance.
The Vacheron is for sure the better value for money, but the Patek rules in the wearability department, and I just cant stand the clutter in the Vacheron, even though the dial is beautiful, and I would like to see a numeral dial on in too as I prefer it to the minimalist just indicators look. Tldr: Vacheron is has better finishing while the Patek is better looking
On the Vacheron you can hide the gmt hand do your homework Tim I have the watch

I also hide mine under the hour hand
If for myslef will be the VC. to show off to others PP.
I own several high-end timepieces, including PP 5712 and Aquanaut. Aquanaut is by far my favorite timepiece, incredibly comfortable, accurate and precise. It is addictive to wear it and it is in a class by itself. I like it above PP 5712. As for VC Overseas Dual Time, the watch is unacceptable to me because of the 4 o'clock pusher. I despise 10 o'clock and 4 o'clock locations for the pushers. They are automatic deal-breakers for me. De gustibum non est disputandum.

Very well put! I agree completely. Just one correction with your Latin ... it’s De gustibus (not De gustibum) 😊
most important: you have a chance to buy vc with your money...
Overseas
Oof, nothing about the Aquanaut is gentle on the eyes
Vc after market is 33k+ now lol
Neither, prefer date apertures to pointers.
VC would get the start, with the PP warming up in the bullpen to come in late and keep the win going
Patek Philippe Aquanaut LIKE, Vacheron Comment why you would chose it over
Great comparison! I personally prefer VC over Patek, but I don’t like this VC dial. In this match, I’m going with Aquanaut.
VC
Aquanaut for me. Not fan of the asymmetric VC (both on the dial and the pushers).
the Aquanaut looks like it came out of a cereal box.
Aquanaut all day
Aquanaut the biggest ripoff in the watch industry
Two colossi
I love VC, but in this case I prefer the Patek.
If you haven’t owned a 5164 you wouldn’t appreciate its appeal. I’m a big VC fan but Patek wins hands down.
the price talks for itself... people buy this patek for 40k euro .. and the shitter that breaks after one day (read watchuseek) for 20 ... so yeah you decide ...
@jackg2425

Andy Reiter 🙄 There’s a video of a nautilus 40th anniversary chrono, far more expensive than either of these, with flyback resetting to 5 seconds instead of 0. One defective piece doesn’t make it a shitter, especially when ALL brands, including Patek, experience defects
Vacheron wins..Patek I overrated....Don't understand the "instagram" followers...Seriously, 35hr power reserve and non-hacking movement (i.e., 324sc)...?? Patek is ridiculously overrated. Social media and fanboyism can be a bane to common sense.
Hmmm... One watch is instantly worth $10,000 more... other $10,000 less any idiot would know which one is better
