V is reborn in flame from the fire at the facility while Evey is reborn in water after she was captured. It's such a stark contrast but it explain their development so well. In the first half of the story, Evey is a pretty passive character, never taking an active stance (the movie changed her encounter with the bishop, in the original novel, V abbandons her after the kill, while movie Evey has more agency trying to run away, something that imho hurt the overall message of the rebirth scene), but after her rebirth, she's much more decisive and active to the plot

Another thing to look at is the symbolisms of fire and water. Fire is often considered as the force of purification, meant to scorch the earth and destroy all that surrounds it with no prejudice nor apathy, both the dominant evil and the silent good. Water is the force of healing, meant to rejuvinate the land after it has been made pure and to foster a new world where good and evil is given opportunity to redefine the land again. When V's plot is finally completed and Parliament is blown up, the symbolism of the dead taking off their masks is that though we lost the silenced good to the fire, they did not die in vain as the great evil is finally vanquished. And V turning over the Gallery to Evey is meant to basically symbolize, "With this little bit of water (the little good left from the old world), go and do what I hoped to do but am not able to. Give new life to the land."

I have had a complicated relationship with this movie. I was a fan of the original Alan Moore comic for years before this movie was made, and I was both excited and nervous about seeing it. Considering how bad comic book adaptations were, for the most part, it was definitely a gamble to attempt to adapt something as dense as one of Alan Moore's more political works. Upon release, I thought it was...ok. A massively trimmed-down and altered story, with several elements that I considered vital to the story omitted, an American leading lady, sub-Matrix action... However, upon repeated viewings the film has definitely grown on me. Weaving's performance and delivery is excellent. Portman's performance (especially during the Valerie sequence) is profoundly moving. The supporting cast is stellar. The tone is, if you can believe it, considerably less bleak than the comic whilst still conveying the oppressive feeling. There are a few mis-steps, in my humble opinion, but it holds up very well and is still an enjoyable movie to watch.

There are very few movies that give me goosebumps anymore, but I remember watching thing and having chills because it was just making me feel so much. Valerie's story, the little girl... One of the things I loved about this movie was that it made bold choices, not just artistic ones but thematic ones. This movie has a point of view, a clear sense of moral and ethical right and wrong. And it's not the sort of "wrong" that is the Galactic Empire goose-stepping around, it's the kinda of wrong or injustice that you can feel in your bones. I feel like that's what pissed off some conservative media pundits. They were all complaining "this movie is preaching that it's wrong for conservative movements to demonize gay people," and the rest of society was like... "yeah, because it is." Another thing I give this movie a ton of credit for is how cynical its view of modern government and media is and how spot on, as well. This dystopian future feels SOOOOO plausible.

For example, he introduced himself to the priest saying "please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste," taking off his mask to reveal horns (quote from the stones song Sympathy for the Devil.) Continuing the theme, when the priest asks who he is, he quotes one of Charles Manson's followers; "I am the devil, and I come to do the devil's work." He does it so often that when Evey pretends to be him showing up for the crowd after V dies, she introduces herself with a Twain quote; "rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated"

I can't tell you if the film was a financial success, I can only guess that many people weren't ready for it then. Times are different now. It's much easier to imagine that something like this could happen in England.. .

I can’t remember how much of a box office success it was, but it was DEFINITELY a big pop culture moment (aka - why we still know that iconic mask because Anonymous took it as their symbol and this movie even inspired the Anonymous movement). I was obsessed with this movie as an edgy 14-year-old 🤣 For Halloween that year, my high school allowed costumes. I went as V and didn’t let anyone know who I was (of course, until classroom roll call 😂) That is such a core memory for me and I had so much fun. I got a lot of compliments on it, had some fake daggers with me, & just kinda snuck & stalked around school all day. Didn’t break character unless absolutely necessary. I was committed 😂 I knew the instant I saw the movie I wanted to do V for Halloween. I had even come up with a few fun phrases like V’s in the gap between that spring and fall. It’s the one Halloween that I went ALL OUT and I’ll never forget it. It got in my school yearbook for that year.

That motion blur following the knives in V's death scene is exactly why I throw knives. The complex tumble, going just where I intend, is beautiful to me, especially when I can dance around and whip or huck the knives. You can throw fast and hard and accurately, without spin, with throwing spike technique, but for me, that defeats the purpose. The complex, compound motions are mesmerizing and serene, a sort of dynamic meditation, like pool in many ways. I like to play darts with steak knives, and I can hit the button often enough to make me feel good (gets me kicked out of bars, though).

Based on the graphic novel series, published from 1988-1989. At the time of the film's release, the story was relevent to a post 9/11 world. All speaking to the state of nations, governments and societies. This was the directorial debut of James McTeigue (2nd unit for The Matrix Trilogy). The Wachowskis' next project after The Matrix Trilogy as producers/screenwriters. Hugo Weaving as V was incredible and the end result of the story means so much. The infamous mask itself has gone for beyond it's one presence in the film. November 5th as the actual holiday of Guy Fawkes Day makes the character of 'V' so meaningful.

Ever 9/11 I say "Remember, remember, the 11th of September, our governments treasonous plot. I see no reason, why the twin tower treason, should ever be forgot." It's how I keep from forgetting our brothers and sisters who dies to hide a massive financial scandal and to galvanize the brave into restocking our military ranks.

"I would describe V for Vendetta as being 'by' him, more than anyone else" Why? The movie was written by the Wachowskis and really isn't what Moore wrote at all, they removed every reference to anarchy and turned it into a generic story about resisting authoritarianism. He had his name taken off the movie for a reason.

33:25 In ALMOST all the scenes it WAS Hugo Weaving under the mask (NOT an extra), except for the fire scene, when stunt double Chad Stahelski literally walked through fire (wearing just a special refrigerated fire resistant gel and a g-string), and several scenes shot in the first month of filming when James Purefoy (the actor originaly cast in the role) was playing the part. He left after 7 weeks citing creative differences with the film-makers and was replaced with Weaving, but some of his takes remained in the movie, albeit with Weaving's voice overdubbed in post production. The director said HE could tell the difference due to subtle differences in the way they moved, but doubted the audience would ever be able to tell.

Hits a bit harder if you are a brit because november the 5th is basically our july 4th but so very relevant with how governments are going these days :( Hugo Weaving did amazing, the coroners death scene is just wonderful and valeries story never fails to make me tear up : Just so well made and balanced and honestly the only real weak part is portmans accent but thats the tiniest nitpick on such an epic movie! I'd recommend watching 1984 after this, it plays on very similar themes and stars john hurt as the main character.

This is one of those movies that will remain in my memory for a long time. I went to the theater to see it with my room mates at the time. The IRL incident that helps to make it even more memorable, during the domino scene either they burned the popcorn at the snack counter or some dumbass pulled the fire alarm. Right as he triggered the dominos fall. Everyone had to leave the building out into a raging thunderstorm. When the fired peeps cleared the building as safe we went back in. They started the movie at the same scene with him flicking the domino. Very surreal.

Yea, this has been my favorite movie since I first saw it. I didn't even know it existed for years, then my wife showed me it one night when we first started dating, we had a movie night at her apartment and we had a nice dinner we cooked together and she put in this DVD and she told me she loved this movie and I needed to see it because I was "missing out". We watched it in near silence cuddled up and I said afterwards "wow, this is my favorite movie I've ever seen"...and it has stayed that way for going on 15 years now. I still watch it at least once a month. Just a great film. Also I was inspired to give roses to all of my victims as well. So I grow roses in our yard for all the ants and beetles and other insects I annhilate with the lawn care lol.
