Utility Tire Cage Split Rim Explosion

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Testing our new utility tire cage with a split rim tire. Good example of why the tire should be placed in the cage standing up rather than laying on its side.

I saw a split rim/2-piece rim tire blow one time when I was in my early teens. My younger brother and I were repairing and mounting tires on the farm. Our dad always warned us about how dangerous split rim tires can be. My younger brother started filling the tire while it was lying on its side, and I told him to flip it over so the locking ring part was facing down in case something when wrong (we didn't have a cage or anything else to use, and we had a locking air chuck that allowed you to fill from a distance so we didn't have to hold it on there). A few moments later, the whole wheel assembly shot probably four feet into the air when the tube inside ruptured at the ring came flying off (we were lucky that it wasn't at full pressure when it happened). It scared the crap out of us and we learned a valuable lesson that day about how dangerous tires can be.

Would the tire cage be installed on site, i.e. anchored on concrete, or would you expect it to be freestanding? If the later, would the movement of the cage help in dissipating the energy - is this part of the design?

@@Jimmyjimjim these two pricks are only giving you shit because they dont understand what you are proposing, and Ive seen cages mounted to the ground and free standing. Im sure they are effective both ways but freestanding sure would absorb alot of energy rather than a mounted cage, itd probably shear the mounting hardware anyways creating shrapnel. A 10.00R20 split ring explosion at like 90 to 110 psi explosion comes out to something like 40,000 pounds of force. Its gotta go somewhere.. Ill leave mine freestanding I think but maybe cable tethers? Tough question
