Utah Likely Not Done Improving the Lineup with So Much Cap Space Available

Спорт

Utah turned some heads when they acquired Sergachev and Marino. Who will they go after next with so much cap space leftover?

FYI, Utah hasn't been cheap on the NBA front, at least since Ryan Smith bought the team. He's willing to pay the luxury tax if it means winning more.

Hell the main reason the Jazz have been cheap recently is actually to do a rebuild. They decided to cash in on Don's and Gobert's peak value, since the team was basically sputtering in the first rounds of the playoffs and making no progress no matter how they built around the duo.

Honestly, has to be one of the very best GM spots in the entire league. Tons of raw young guns, lots of picks, & loads of cap space. Plus we all know the Utah fanbase will be rabid. Utah (once they pick a real name) will be a prime spot in the near future.

Been saying this for the last two season. The Yotes were taking on everyone’s contracts on purpose to get to league minimum. Built up a ton of cap space, draft capital, and picked up a ton of young talent specially as of forwards. It was set so almost all of the contracts would expire this year and they’d still have their young talent and would only have to now get a good defensive core built and a star veteran paid with all the cap they have left over. Recipe to make it to the playoffs and go on a run. As a Yotes fan I’ll be rooting for all the Yotes players I’ve been rooting for for years now, hope to see Utah utilize what the Yotes were doing and it looks like they are. Mark my words they will be a contender if not this year, then next. Cooley, Guenther, Kesselring, Keller, etc. all looked fantastic last season. Gunna be a great team going forward

Central is wide-open IMO: Wild, Blues and Nashville could rebound and make it and Dallas, Col and Winnipeg all have noticeable flaws - only lock to miss the playoffs is Chicago. As for the Pacific, I'd say the only sure bets are the Oil and Vegas. The Utah Yotes could very easily surprise everyone...

Welcome to the nhl but just so you know, hes not in any special territory where he can just spend to his whim, the cap had been pretty stagnate for a few years and barely rose, most teams have been making tough decisions to keep their team under that cap and while you have space to sign players you will be in the same boat as every other team, who to keep and who to let go and who to resign and be just under or at the cap allocated. We all spend to the limit and then have players that want a raise when their contracts are due and have to decide who to let go to pay them or who to get when we let them walk because we cant afford it.

The roster they inherited and the moves done this offseason make a good argument for an actual decent season ending in a wildcard spot. Maybe things will gel together well for them in their first year away from all that Meruelo business and they get a confidence boost. If not, they shouldn’t be too far at all from playoff contention. I've been saying (and still think) since day 1, this team is going to explode right out of the gate. They were a playoff team last year, until the 14 game skid, which the players, and coaches all admitted they couldn't get the relocation fears out of the room. It perfectly coincided with the 1st Utah rumor, and tanked the season. What they did last year with the D core they had was insane, and with the additions they've made, prospects coming up, an arena to play in, a ravenous new fan base, and most importantly, the relocation monkey off these player backs, I think they will shock the west this year right away. I didn't even mention coaching staff, from Tourigny all the way to the goalie coaches, are the most underrated coaching staff in the biz.

In Arizona Meruelo was selling talent to shed money to stick more in his pockets. Up side to that is the team has a ton of cap space and lots of future draft picks. THIS IS A PLAYOFF TEAM! Since hockey won't be returning anytime soon, we'll be following the _________ here in Arizona! Fans in Utah please love these guys like we did in Arizona; They deserve it!

I wouldn’t say the Utah Jazz are being cheap just yet. Ryan Smith became the owner in the fall of 2020, so with COVID had his first “normal” season in 21-22. This past year was the first year of a full-blown rebuild which with the NBA but especially Danny Ainge means gutting the team to the studs for draft picks and young players. I’d expect Ryan Smith to use all that cap soon for Utah HC in due time. They were so below the cap that I doubt they’ll be able to use up all the space in one off-season.

When I look at it now, it's a surprisingly balanced roster. I worry they lack a bit of (super)star power to get them over the playoffs line but plenty of teams hve managed without it in the past. The young players (Cooley, Guenther, Doan) have to take a serious step forward to make a difference

From a design point of view I really hope Utah doesn't mess up their branding. I'm really gonna miss the Coyotes brand, strip, logo, colours - everything. They really had a unique and distinctive look in the NHL. I also really feel sorry for the Arizona fanbase. You guys really had a pretty dynamic team formed that looked destined for big things, and to have that ripped away from you is a pretty raw deal.

Who knows, you may see two wildcard teams out the west and low 90s might get you in. If they were to target a player like Necas they got more than enough attractive pieces to do so

Cooley is an excellent talent who will be a number one center soon enough, maybe this year, and Hayton centered a very productive line with Schmaltz and Keller before struggling with injuries last season. Cooley is a legit NHL star in the making, watched him live in Vancouver towards the end of the season and saw how talented and fast he is out there.

Ryan Smith knows he has to spend to put a competitive product on the floor for 5 years or so. He doesn’t have to do that with the Jazz. It’s a more established Utah franchise. Many long time Jazz fans are going to be watching and if Ryan Smith plays it wrong he could be facing an empty arena for both.

I really wish the Jazz would just choose if they're trying to win or tank and do one or the other. They seem to be doing something inbetween, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense. They accidentally ended up with some pretty good players, so they end up not winning enough games to make the playoffs and also not losing enough to get a high draft pick. I was especially annoyed two years ago, when the Jazz probably would've ended up in 6th or 7th place, but traded Mike Conley away and lost a ton of games in the second half of the year.
