Did Oleksandr Usyk Beat Tyson Fury Because of His Kettlebell Training?
Let's delve into the Soviet training protocol approach, a method that meticulously categorizes training into four distinct phases to eliminate luck, chance, or mishaps:
- The General Physical Preparatory (GPP) Period
- The Specialized Physical Preparatory (SPP) Period
- The Competitive Period
- The Transitional Period
In the *GPP phase*, the objective is to build an athlete's general fitness base to an exceptional level. During this period, the athlete dedicates no more than 20% of their time to their specific sport, while the remaining 80% is spent in the weight room. This phase focuses on conditioning all major joints, muscles, ligaments, and other structures, with special emphasis on strengthening weak areas.
Moving into the *SPP phase*, the training shifts gears. Now, 80% of the workload is highly specific to the athlete's sport, featuring a strong correlation to their performance needs. While the volume of work decreases, the intensity and complexity of the workouts increase. The foundational GPP developed earlier is crucial here; without it, the athlete couldn't handle the demanding intensity and volume.
For instance, an American football player in this regimen might perform explosive exercises like fast upward squats, jumps out of the squat, split squat jumps, and bench step-ups to simulate starting leg action. Depth jumps enhance explosiveness, while push-up jumps with a clap mimic repelling an opponent.
When the Competitive Period arrives, the months of training are put to the test. Initially, the athlete adjusts to the competitive environment. As the season progresses, they aim to deliver peak performances, focusing solely on refining their technique. No additional time is spent improving physical strength or fitness levels during this period.
Finally, the Transitional Period provides the athlete with a break from their sport and the physical stress endured. The goal here is to prevent overtraining through a "minimal effective dose" approach.
Interestingly, the most critical phase, the *SPP phase*, does not include kettlebell training. While kettlebells can be a valuable tool in building GPP, they are not the key factor in transforming athletes into dominant forces in their sports.
So, did Oleksandr Usyk beat Tyson Fury because of his kettlebell training? While kettlebells might have played a role in his general physical preparation, it’s the specialized, sport-specific training and meticulous planning that truly hone a champion’s skills.

👋There is one irrefutable fact - it is IMPOSSIBLE to simply stand up and start juggling two kettlebells for pleasure! You need to devote a lot of time, and this was done because in the history of my country, Ukraine, there were many great athletes, such as Poddubny, and everyone worked with kettlebells. These are traditions) And I personally know one of the general physical training trainers, Alexander, and this is exactly his kettlebell handwriting😉

I would say the bigger question is whether or not kettlebells are truly part of his regular training program and if so what phase of the program are they incorporated into (I agree probably GPP) but also how much they were relied on in contrast to other modalities that were not used. In other words does he use kettlebells for the development and maintenance of a foundation of strength for his boxing training? If so does he also lift weights? If he only relies on kettlebells it would demonstrate that for some boxers kettlebells are a sufficient tool to develop and/ or maintain a strength foundation for competitive boxing. This is the question that has been on my mind since I started using kettlebells. I don't have time or energy for both kettlebells and weights and combining both into a training program makes things more complicated. For most of us it makes more sense to just keep it simple. The question that it leaves us with is are kettlebells sufficient to develop enough strength to where there is no loss of performance (for whatever it is we do) if we are replacing the barbell with kettlebells? I think this is truly the question that a lot of us have who love kettlebells. How much strength do we actually need? Are kettlebells sufficient alone to develop that level of strength? The answer to those questions depends on the activity we are engaged in. That leads to a third question which is what level of strength is the kettlebell not capable of developing and at what level does it become inefficient to the task and barbells are therefore necessary or the preferred tool? I think studies and information that compare kettlebells to barbells when it comes to overall strength development as well as transfer to performance comparisons would be a valued benefit to the fitness world right now given the recent popularity of kettlebells.

I think an average man who workout with kettlebell will beat in fight average man who workout with bodybuilding system on machines and barbell. With Kettlebell you get more endurance and this is key. I remember myself when i used to workout as bodybuilder and how i felt myself. With Kettlebell my endurance is way superior.

This is why I don't agree with this video power strength and endurance is what you need to fight. Kettlebells give you power, flexibility, strength and endurance. A strong core strong shoulders hand eye co ordination enough for a boxing match. Weights make you stiff causes you to think in lateral motions where kettlebell thinking is unilateral.
