I'm paying close attention to ARBD because of my 64 yr old husband.

I've a family member in a home/rehabilitation unit because of ARBI. He/she was in hospital for 6 months before being moved. No improvement at all. I can't explain the hurt we are going through.

Hey you’re not alone. My very close brother got injured in 2020 & now has Korsakoff syndrome(undiagnosed) but my research has led me to the well informed assumption. He can’t form new memories & his cognitive skills were highly affected. Luckily he can walk/talk on his own & his intelligence is still intact. And 2 years later he makes small but significant improvements. His memory just took a big hit & will be most likely disabled for the rest of his life. Alcohol is poison.

Can I ask how old your family member was when the condition became seriously debilitating and over what time frame did the family member drink consistently/excessively.

@Darren Parkinson my brother is 48 years old he has been an alcoholic since the age of 19. He has been in and out of the hospital with liver damage for about 15 years. He just took bad one day in July 2020 he was fighting for his life. He was in leonard cheshire for 1 1/2 year's. We just got him home 2 weeks ago. His memory comes & goes it's very sad to see him like this but thankfully he is still with us.

The government haven't a clue on helping people with alcohol problems. Giving a alcoholic full rate DLA is wrong. Money should be spent helping them not throwing money at them & hoping they will go away.

Very informative video. l lost my boyfriend to Alcoholism last August He had so many health problems, mental, physical and emotional. Was suffering fromARLD but at the end he also had ARBD. Very tragic and hearbreaking I really don't think the public at large have any idea whatsover of hiw complex set if problems Alcoholics face. What kind of tests/scans are there if you want to see if you've damaged your brain with alcohol? I would like to get myself checked but I don't even know where to begin since I don't even know what the tests/scans are called...

So, highly intelligent drinkers might take longer for their brain damage symptoms to become apparent because of their larger reserve of brain cells? They can manage to function normally for them, so their close relatives, who know that they're drinking might be a problem, don't realise the damage that ultimately can be just around the corner. They haven't started hiding their empty bottles and can explain quite rationally that they simply enjoy a drink. If you bring up the subject of a drinking problem they can laugh their way into changing the subject. But they won't contact you so often now because you could pose a risk to their enjoyment. I only know one person who has been successful in stopping drinking. He's highly intelligent but can't seem to find real enjoyment in life. He's been dry for 20 years now. He says he's missing who he used to be.

3.5 bottles of wine over a week?? That quota will start teetering someone onto alcohol ism wow that's lots! Shud be 3.5 over a month! At worst!
