Aging and Alcohol: How Much Is Too Much?

Dr. Anna Lembke discusses the impact of alcohol consumption, including potential damage to our physical and cognitive health, as well as signs and symptoms of alcohol dementia: Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, in both its acute stage encephalopathy and late stage chronic confusion and possibly psychosis. A Q&A will follow the presentation.
Dr. Anna Lembke is the Medical Director of Stanford Addiction Medicine and Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic. She is nationally recognized as sounding the alarm on the opioid epidemic. Dr. Lembke educates policymakers and the public on addiction and what to do about it.
Hosted by Avenidas Care Partners.

This was great. I learned a lot. By the world’s standard, I don’t fall in a category of alcoholic or use disorder, but I decided in December last year to stop all consumption of alcohol, not even a glass of wine with friends and I can certainly say it’s been eye opening. I see things differently. Thank you for your work and sharing this.

I found the same thing. During the height of the Pandemic, I used the time to abstain from drinking and did a 4 month block and a 3 month block. I did drink maybe one time a month on and off in-between. I usually kick back more beers or wine than healthy in one sitting. I came to the conclusion that alcohol consumes much more time and health in a negative way than people realize. If it didn't have so many strings attached, it would be great. The problem is that it punishes you for using it and wires your brain to need it. That's a conundrum very unnecessary to add to your life.

While I appreciate the conversation, let's be clear about the truth. There is no "safe" or "healthy" amount of alcohol. It is literally poison. Trust me, I understand the appeal, but don't kid yourself that any amount is healthy or truly safe. . . That is ridiculous.

I`m 58 years old and have drunk about 150 units of alcohol each and every week without fail ( alas ) for the last 30 years. Before that I was drinking about 120 units of alcohol per week for about 10 years. ( I`m English, so am simply assuming you know what a unit of alcohol is : 1 shot of spirit / half a pint of beer / 1 glass of wine ). Not long ago ( a month ago ) I decided to give up drinking alcohol. But this was quite out of the blue, since I had never had any intention of giving up alcohol prior to the day. It was Her Majesty`s Platinum Jubilee weekend. I was expecting some sleepless nights, some nightmares, some irritation and shaking of the limbs. I have experienced absolutely none of these things. Not one. Essentially, after decades of very heavy drinking I gave it up with no problem at all. I just don`t get it. I did pray to God and told him that I`d need some help in the giving up, that`s all ! I`ve told my sister about my decision and she advises me to take things `one day at a time,` which made me laugh. Take what one day at a time ? There is no hardship in my cessation, and I still don`t get it. How is it that I have had absolutely no withdrawal symptoms at all ? What I`m asking is this : Is it possible for a person to drink massively and over a prolonged period of time and not be an alcoholic ? I should have gone through Hell in withdrawal, but have been through anything but.... Could I decide to never drink again ? Of course.... It`s nothing.

If you dont mind me asking. Was it mostly beer or alcohol like boubon, vodka and stuff like that? Im not very religious, but SOMEHOW you was able to avoid those symptoms. Hey up, Ghost85. 30 + years ago I was drinking pints of lager. Then about 20 years ago I switched to the cheap and strong ( 7.5% ) white-like cider, as well as rather a lot of vodka. For the past ten years it has been vodka. Many, many years ago I went through a relatively short period of taking ( illegal ) drugs. I had a few bad trips, which were extremely horriffic ( anyone that has never had a bad acid trip has no idea just how petrified it is possible to be ). I was expecting a similar experience upon withdrawal from alcohol - like hallucinating I was in Hell or something like that. But nope ! None of it. I guess I`m extremely lucky.

Drinking alcohol is a sin against the Jehovah God of the king James bible... He says that wine is a mockery & strong drink is raging..means that alcohol makes fun of you..or makes a fool of you..causing your brain & brain function to deteriorate..the raging part of that means that it makes you hot headed & keeps you from sleeping & getting your rest..most forms are alcohol also contains sulfites..which also affect your nerves..as an irritant.. the bible says. "when it moves of itself, do not even look at it"..meaning that it is a poison & to not even think about putting it into your mouth... as if it is were a food or a medicine..if you want to consume wine or other such beverages for health reasons..you can get alcohol free wines, etc...the phrase .."when it moves of itself" refers to fermentation..the new testament refers to same idea.."be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess".. the excess refers to the alcohol..if it said to not be drunk with grape juice, it would not make any sense.. so the tense of the verb "be not drunk" means to not even start..or to not even look at it or think about using alcohol as a medicine or as food ..alcohol makes the blood platelets sticky. causing them to clump together..& since only one fits thru the capillaries at a time..which why a person who drinks alcohol has blood shot eyes or higher blood pressure ..the eyes can heal up..but inside the brain..blood leakages cannot be healed up..so the brain continues to leak blood. . causing blockages & brain starvation..& depression & confusion & wobbling while walking... alcohol evaporates at 117 degrees..of temperature. so the healthy enzymes are preserved. . grape juice or raisins are better..but alcohol free wine is ok also..when the bible says to "drink a little wine for your stomach's sake"..it is referring to grape juice.. the word "grape juice" was invented in the English l language 1870..until that time the only words that were used were wine or new wine..but they were confusing..so they created the word grape juice..to reduce misunderstanding.. so when it says that Jesus turned the water into wine ..it actually means grape juice..God never makes alcohol..in nature all that is found vinegar.. only a human can make alcohol ..& he has to remove the skins & add white sugar... to speed it up to jump over from vinegar into alcohol..so the whole process is very unnatural.. Baptist people believe what I have just said..& in the old testament, the Nazarites practiced these beliefs also...Abraham Lincoln went from church to church from 20 yrs advocating these ideas..the United States passed an amenment to the constitution prohibiting the production & distrubution & sales of alcoholics beverages..it was later repealed..because so many people were addicted to it..based upon false ideas..the mercy annual which us a dictionary used by doctors used to define alcohol as a poison..but so nof the new students in our training hospitals began to come to the USA from other world religions & so they changed the definition of alcohol from being a poison...to food or medicine to accommodate them & not to offend them. .

The reason people who drink in extreme moderation are healthier is because the very reason they don't drink in excess is because they Don't have any risk factors that would trigger them to want to drink. Alcohol has nothing to do with it. Its the bigger psychological picture you shoukd look at.
