Antidepressant Medication Alternatives that Work | Dr. Daniel Amen

At Amen Clinics-one of the world leaders in applying brain imaging science to help people with emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and learning issues-calls from people experiencing depression or suicidal thoughts are way up.
According to a new poll, 45% of Americans say the coronavirus pandemic is impacting their mental health. This is evidenced by the increased use of antidepressant medications during the lockdown. According to a recent report, the number of new prescriptions for antidepressants filled during the pandemic jumped by nearly 19%. This isn’t surprising considering the pandemic is ramping up stress, worry, and isolation. All of this can trigger your vulnerabilities. But before you call your doctor and ask for antidepressants, you need to get the facts about these drugs.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are one of the most commonly prescribed types of antidepressants, and they come with a laundry list of side effects, including sexual dysfunction, insomnia, headaches, and nausea. They also carry a black box warning, meaning they pose the most serious and dangerous potential side effects, such as suicidal thoughts. In addition, once you start taking SSRIs, it can be very hard to stop.
The good news is, there are alternatives to antidepressants.

Took meds since i was a child. At 28, i became suicidal. I stopped taking all the meds 33 years ago. I still have very high highs and very low lows, but working through them without meds. Tons of B vitamins. Moderate daily exercise. Consistent sleep hygiene. Removed all negative people, places and things. Developed a spiritual connection with my Higher Power. Journaling. I feel for everyone struggling with mental health. Love yourself and believe in yourself. You are stronger than you know, but treat yourself gently. God bless

Most doctors want to help people. They just do it in the manners that they know. It's the same with psychiatrists with antipsychotics in schizophrenia. They think they're helping people even if they're only slapping a bandaid on it, and in the case of antipsychotics, a very unpleasant bandaid.

A Non - Prescription for Depression. A long time ago, a college professor asked me for suggestion to help his adult daughter who was depressed. I hared with him something Edgar Cayce suggested to a woman he was talking to going through the same thing. He told her 1. to draw closer to God and God will draw closer to you. #2. Go and help those who are less fortunate then you and you'll see just how blessed you are. Also you'll feel good about helping them feel better in their time of need. I agree with him as I've volunteered a few times myself and one time an an elderly homeless woman made a point to stop me as I was serving food to say thank you and how grateful she was we were there to help. So the professor said that he could not wait to tell his daughter the suggestion. He did and she did start volunteering and it helped lifted her spirits.

It's 2024 and this vid just showed up in my feed. Bumped into my neighbor last night. She was wondering why she hadn't called lately. I told her that I can't find anything upbeat to talk about. I'm not suicidal but I'm tired and really want it all to be over ( I didn't tell her that). I had to euthanize my 17 year cat two months ago. She was such a good companion and I suppose she gave me a reason to keep going. I'm not obese; I eat a lot of organic salads, I walk everywhere, I refuse to take ANY meds, my D levels are good and I've never owned a TV. I'm 65 and I've had struggles with depression since I was a child. Thank you.

What I’ve learned from my iatrogenic injury caused by psych meds and medical negligence is that deficiencies in minerals, vitamins, hormones imbalances, and a toxic environment (physical and social) cause health issues that are misdiagnosed as mood disorders or mental illness, when in reality we may just be deficient in something and/or surrounded by a very toxic environment. I was perfectly healthy and fit over two years ago, and suddenly started having panic attacks, so after few tests (non thorough or enough testing) my doc put me on a benzo and on a trial and error of ssris, and finally a super toxic atypical antidepressant that have caused me tons of health issues I never had before. I probably had a mineral/vitamin deficiency, and they didn’t caught it. My issue could have been solved naturally, but instead, I was given toxic poison that almost killed me. Do deep research before accepting any type of treatment...it will save your life!

Thank God for this video. This doctor is totally genuine and ethical. My family member has been diagnosed with mild depression n anxiety disorder recently. The psychiatrist only talked to her for about 20 mins without any test, or questionnaire. Just by talking to her and gave her prescription of prosac with the reason that her serotonin level is low. How would you know her serotonin level is low without any actual test and that was so scary. My family member tried the medicine for a week and it totally turned her mood upside down. The doctor claimed these are normal side effects. She instructed her to continue for another month by increasing the dosage double. My family member would not listen to her but stopped taking it. This is crazy.

I kept sayin my body needed help my mind was just following my body because i felt like hell. I was given an antidepressent. The side effect was that i couldnt see more than 20 yds. So glad for that because i took my multi that day and started to feel better! You are amazing! This should be taught on tv daily!

This is why I like him, he's not just prescribing antidepressants to people, which I feel is one of the main problems with psychiatry is that you go to a psychiatrist or psychologist, and they automatically say: "put them on antidepressants" antidepressants are one of the worst things to put someone on IMO especially teenagers why the hell would you give a teenager a developing mind, antidepressants? NOT good idea. Usually when teenagers suffer from depression, more often than not it's because of some kind of trauma NOT a chemical imbalance within the brain.

This topic wells up, trends awhile disappears again and like so much in " Healthcare " it's just ' business as usual', no cures just return customers for life... Just say no to drugs unless of course they are from pharmaceutical companies, reputable doctors and the complete, broken industry of Medical 💅 care.

It's true, healing can be accomplished in many ways. What helped me was stepping back from negative influences, getting back into reading and living the Holy Word Of God!! His teachings are based in reality. There is no scamming, no politics, nothing of the things that can be found in our cultures today. I learned focusing on myself too much got me nowhere. I learned to think about others, especially those in need. It's easier than you think. The human condition is complex, but when you stop putting yourself first, then comes the inner peace. Take the time to eat healthier foods, take walks, also important is stay connected to other people. If you're able to give a helping hand, do so. Helping out is never a small thing!! I didn't used to do these things, so it is no wonder that I was depressed. I stopped taking Prozac in 1999, when the psych. wanted to up my dosage and write a Rx for sleeping pills. Sleep problems was a side effect for me. That's when I said enough already. I'm so glad I did.👍👍👍👍

I've been on different medications for depression, then bipolar disorder, ADD, since I was 17. I'm 62 tomorrow. Nothing has worked, my default state seems to be a depressed one. I honestly can't see an end to my depression so I don't search for treatment/cures etc nowadays. It seems pointless to keep battling against something you can never 'win'. Acceptance seems to be a thing. Just accept that what is, is and quit the fight. I'm genuinely looking forward to stopping breathing. Permanently. The stillness, nothingness and just 'letting-go" gives me a sense of comfort. I signed a consent form for a surgery I'm having next week and one of the questions was "DNR: Would you want to be resuscitated in the event that your heart stopped during the procedure?" I've never noticed the DNR tickbox before on medical forms but this time it felt quite liberating ticking the *Do Not Resuscitate* box. Life is just, eurgh, I'd never choose to go through 'this' all again. If there is an 'afterlife', I'll pass thanks, give it to someone who can appreciate it.

I got cured of severe, suicidal depression thanks to a Chinese doctor and a Colombian doctor. I no longer see American doctors. These two doctors saw depression as a whole-body illness. The Chinese one told me that five foods were causing it. I got rid of them and the depression was gone. The Colombian doctor told me I had to take antibiotics to kill bad gut bacteria. I refused to do so because they kill good gut bacteria and that can affect mood. I had to take a lot of antibiotics years later for a sinus infection. The Colombian was right. I can now eat whatever I want and have been 100% depression-free for years.

I developed the most horrific med injury....AKATHISIA....at the end of 2019. It's been pretty horrific to see the system from the inside, and to learn the true story of how the DSM was created. It's absolutely evil. All I do anymore is spread awareness. I had no idea this world of suffering existed until I entered it myself. Most doctors have absolutely zero clue about this stuff. Good doctors are rare. Thank you for all you do. More people need to know. I wish I'd known, 10 years ago, before I was polydrugged into oblivion ...and for no reason...I had a mystery illness after having my 5th baby and since no doctor could figure it out, they all agreed it was "all in my head." I never had a mental illness, but doctors went "off label" and tried all kinds of black-box-warning meds on me. Sadly, most people only learn about this when they become a victim. I used to praise my meds as they made me sicker and sicker. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

I have the very same story. I had a severely pinched nerve in my lower right buttock. It was an athletic injury. My GP and every specialist she sent me to didn’t examine me, they didn’t listen to me and they dismissed me as having vulvodynia ( without doing the proper tests ) and cyclothymia…..utter nonsense. The pain was so bad that I couldn’t breathe. It burned 🔥🔥🔥every time I sat and after internal PT I couldn’t lie down anymore. I also.was poly drugged to the point of losing cognitive function for years. I got help and answers out of province and in Minnesota yet still, the doctors where I live neglected me, and left me to die in agony from severe sleep deprivation. Long story….I hired a registered nurse consultant and she advocated for my surgery. The nerve was severely pinched in three spots but it was successfully released from the ligaments and fascia it was stuck on. I have suffered and it’s because doctors were too lazy to listen to me, they profiled me, they committed fraud in their consult notes and all they did is prescribed medication management. I needed surgery. I’m lucky to be alive.
