The U.S. Navy conducts shock trials of new ship designs to confirm that ships can continue to meet demanding mission requirements under harsh conditions they might encounter in battle.

    Yes. Torpedoes, depth charges and high-yield missiles don't need to hit the carrier to damage it. Blast waves propagate much farther and with more energy in water. This tests the hull integrity.
