Using triangle carbide inserts in a homemade cutter was a bad idea. || RotarySMP

Ғылым және технология

Don't do this. Triangle inserts like these TCMT 110202 have two issues:
1/ being 60°, they always engage, or at least rub on the bottom
2/ there is only one edge to locate the insert in it's pocket, and that is not rigid enough.
The inserts come loose after a couple of cuts, as you can see in the video I made when using it. • Unreliable tooling is ...

    That empty space in the Clarkson box was for a small packet of digestive biscuits, essential acoutrements for British machine tool operators. You may find that the beds on British machine tools are slightly longer, and you'll be pleased to know that it is designed to give you somewhere to set your cup of tea down so you can dunk your bikkie. Great skills as always Mark, thanks for the entertainment/envy paradox.

    Nice tool! If you use that cutter and you have the bottom engaged as well as the side, there is a good chance all hell will break loose. Chatter. I have made these before and found that if you want or need to also have the bottom engaged you might need to use a DCMT insert. The commercial versions that use TCMT have the insert at a slight angle to the axis, providing clearance for the inner bottom edge, but this also means that the dovetail face is not quite flat.

  • @RotarySMP

    @RotarySMP

    If your Dovetail height is 11mm, you will need the TCMT16's. The TCMT 11 are about 9.5mm high. It has been pointed out that by moving the cutting edge so far forward of the plane through the center (4.4mm), my cutter will actually cut a slight radius on the dovetail face. I was trying to ensure I had enough clearance to prevent rubbing on the rear edge. I screwed up and made it 4.4mm instead of the intended 2mm. Probably not relevant in this static use case, but if you need to meachine a sliding way, keep the cutting edge closer to the center line. The 7° clearance angle on TCMT means you could probably get away with on CL, as long as your cutter diameter is above about 30mm.

    That worked great, a really nice looking cutter too. The lathe made a fab job of the turning work. When you chose a 60 degree insert at the beginning I did wonder if that would be OK. I was thinking that a more acute angle (e.g. 55) would be needed - mounted to provide a 5 degree relief at the bottom. In my mind this would mean the cutter wouldn't rub at the bottom but clearly it worked no problem. - Heather

    The finger on your cutter grinder looks too thick. It won’t help you have enough feel on smaller cutters as it is too rigid. We used broken hacksaw blades as fingers. The tap wrench was way too big for the tap. You need to use a small “t” type tap wrench for those tiny taps. (Trying to be helpful comments) . The dovetail cutter worked very well. I bet you were pleased 😊

    Thanks Chris. You are right, that finger came with it, and was made from power hacksaw blade. I even have a worn out hand hacksaw blade sitting next to the Clarkson ready to be reshaped. That was the smallest tap wrench on hand. The first cutter had some feel to it. The second one I got to confident, and turned to fast and the inertia hid the feel. Dumb mistake. You really should make a way cover solution for that Schaublin lathe... A great little machine, but Schaublin really has some mental people in the design and details department... I`ve been watching Stefan`s videos for quite a while, and those compound slides by Schau that he worked on are also made in a stupid way in regards to oil grooves... To be precise, the grooves are made in such a way that they leave a high spot over time in a section, which then galls the rest of the slide should you actuate it towards the more extreme ends of the travel... I really can`t see as to why would such a reputable company make such design faults and oversights with one of the most fundamental parts of the machine - the lubrication setup... Otherwise, a nice project! This type of cutter has been in mind for quite a while now, but i never got to making it as i am atm just sitting in my car and waiting for my girl... I mean, doing other shit and preparing for building of a new shop to actually fit all my machines... All the best and kind regards! Steuss Edit- speaking of that mill that your friend has got, i commented on your last video, those machines by Prvomajska are supposedly of extremely good quality, at least material-wise... Tho, i was referring to a 90degree head for Luke, rather than this machine specifically... Who knew, i speak of them one day and the other day, there is one that you run into...

    @@RotarySMP I get that, but nothing beats a proper cover set... You just rely on the one shot oiler sys and the covers take care of everything else for at least a couple of years, just be sure to cover the machined surfaces with some rust inhibitor agent like the boeshield t9 or similar to prevent any crap developing away from sight... It also then allows you to use grinders and similar terrors near the machines without any chance of it causing issues in any way... And once again, i`m in love with that 4 end massive toolpost... Such a majestic piece... I quite like the other smaller single ended toolholder you got there... Some quite nice components...

    Not sure that you can get an insert cutter like this in Europe for €40-50, or tomorrow, but this is a hobby, so I am happy to learn how to make one, and make a video of it. I took a look, and it seem an insert dovetail cutter is more like €500.

  • @joansparky4439

    Have u checked the dovetail angle after cutting it? If the TCMT11 insert's cutting blade plane is on the rotation axis the insert will rub on the dovetail that is being cut in the upper part, but the dovetail angle will be correct. To prevent rubbing the insert is better placed half its thickness above that plane (it's center plane then contains the rotation axis), but this affects the cutting envelope and subsequently the resulting dovetail angle, so the insert needs to be rotated in its seat to compensate.. it's a bit tricky.

  • @joansparky4439

    @joansparky4439

    PS: if the inserts back plane contains the rotation axis to prevent rubbing (or it's even further ahead as is visible in 16:55 , plane of back of opposite inserts are like 5mm apart) then the cutting envelope will NOT create a 60 deg dovetail..

  • @joansparky4439

    Yeah, it was for clearance, although I screwed up and gave it more clearance (4.4mm ahead of the CL) than I planned (2mm). It will cut a curved surface. I need to see whether it will make much difference on a static clamping surface like this. On a sliding way, it would cause more scraping.

    @@RotarySMP Thanks for the reply! (Love your channel btw.) I'm not sure it'll cut a curved surface... effectively the insert is rotated relative to a line through the axis of the tool's rotation, and taken to its limit with the cutter at 90º that would produce a vertical surface (if it still cut, which of course it wouldn't). So I think it'll still be straight, but not 60º. But then again the geometry of this kind of stuff ties my brain in knots so who knows.

    Question: Why not drill the screw hole all the way through? Granted, I know you'll be the only one using it and *probably* not leaving it lying around with no anvil or screw in it. I just worked a place where we had to machine many of our own parts and features for old machines, and *someone* would always lose anvils for the tool holders, so swapping between a LH RH Center he'd take the anvil off another one, leave it on the carriage, then pack it full of chips (we had to machine metal, epoxy resin, other non-ferrous materials that make nasty dust that cements when wet/oiled). So many of our tooling bars we wasted time picking clean that we eventually through drilled them all. This also let us use any length screw since the different holders sometimes had a screw 1mm different and well, you guessed it, if he was losing anvils he was losing screws and then F@#$king the next guy over because the inserts wouldn't actually be clamped tight.

    Google translates that to "the ignorant and the slanderer". I am not sure what that means in this context.

    G'day mate! Regarding the Hacksaw, I'll be in England in April so might try to snag one while I'm there. I know it's a false economy considering how much the plane ticket was The new lathe is running beautifully. It's weird not seeing you tinkering with it! [edit] The hacksaw in the UK is 15 pounds on Amazon. I think I'll get a couple and prepare to be stopped by customs and "bOrDEr sECuriTy" on the way back to the states 🤔

    Hi Vince, I still have plenty of tinkering to do, but it is much more usable than it was before I made the control panel.
