Using the Sunna heddle to weave patterned bands

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Check out my blog at: durhamweaver64.blogspot.co.uk/
This video shows how to use the Sunna heddle from www.stoorstalka.com/
This heddle is designed to make the weaving of patterned bands easier to learn and quicker to do. The pattern I am weaving is a lovely knot design - not a traditional Sámi band pattern. The wool yarn is from www.artyarn.co.uk/
The books Sámi Band Weaving and Woven Bands from Sweden are available from www.blurb.com/ They are also available as Ebooks, Apple iPad format.
See my blog at durhamweaver64.blogspot.co.uk/
My latest book is published by Schiffer Press 2018 Weaving Patterned Bands how to create and design with 5, 7, and 9 pattern threads. It is available from Amazon and craft outlets.
Happy weaving.

Displays excellent understanding of what makes a successful instructional video for procedural learning: thr. speaks only what needs to be said; no distracting chatter or music; labels her actions with a little "chant" when working: "pick up one, over two, pick up one, over two..." I hope she presents other small lessons. This is superb teaching.

Oh my goodness! I have watched so many KZread videos trying to learn weaving and I have to say you make it sound so simple. I crochet, knit, work with clay and just about anything I can get my hand's on and now I can't wait to add this to one of my new hobbies. Thank you so much.

I have recently learned about this type of weaving and love it! I have a 3d printer and used that to print a heddle and shuttle. Your blog was very helpful for learning to warp and the videos give a lot more little details that are needed to get better results!

Yes all the pattern threads go through the top row of holes on the heddle. The background threads and the border threads are threaded alternately through the long slots and holes. I have a KZread video on Threading the rigid heddle for narrow band weaving which may help but it is for the Baltic style weave structure like the Sunna heddle. You can weave the bands using a doubled holed heddle but the pattern may not be as crisp. I am running an online workshop with the Yahoo discussion group Braids and Bands in March. I will be covering the double holed heddle as well as the Sunna heddle. Check the web site for The Braid Society.

@@durhamsilkweaver Can I trouble you with one more question please? :) I want to make a strap/band about 2" wide. So I was thinking of buying the largest(17 pattern slots) sunna heddle - (maybe the 13 would be big enough with dk wool?) I am assuming that I don't need to use all the pattern slots but can use as many as my pattern demands. Is this correct? Thanks
