Using The Eventide H9 On Bass | The Practice Room #80

Музыка

I was up until 4am last night programming some voicings in the Eventide H9's "Quadravox" algorithm, and today's practice session is what was born out of that.
I love the fact that I can program up to for voices over four octaves, but have yet to find a solution for programming parallel voicings, and not being tied down to a mode or tonal center. There's a lot of Michael Brecker EWI influence here, and I've been a big fan of Robby Kilgore and George Whitty who I know both did programming for Mike's setup. But there there is an equal amount of influence from modern pop and electronica producers as diverse as Diplo and Trentemoller.
There will be an upcoming episode of The Pedal Studio that deals with exactly how I got these sounds programmed, but for now, this is what I'm doing with them to integrate them into my setup, and make them work in a live situation.

    Fantastic sounds Janek! Very inspiring! I have both H9 and Xerograph Delux but I never thought of combining them in this way. Can’t wait for the video where you explain how you came up with these sounds. Love all your videos for both practice room and especially two bass hit! You guys sooooo cute!

    Amazing tones being emitted Janek. Have you got an Envelope Follower Pedal. I have an old 70’s model called ‘The Funk Machine’ which adds amazing twang to my sound. A great type of pedal. Keep up the great work. Sounds awesome! ✊

    Eventide I remember when they came out of the pro studios. To the point: that there isn't a stomp box, it's a god damn quadrapoly synthesizer plain and simple. 1) it's viciously expensive the set up to sound like that. 2) oh I want one so bad my nose is bleeding. I work for a church what gets lively with the black contemporary heavily jazz tinged music. I play bass the director was more animation with bass. He listened to a lot of Parliament in the past. He's a stout fellow and I DON'T have space for a keyboard synth. I'll get this rig here for myself and use it at the church. I'm sure it's priced high to keep out the hoi poloi and posers.

    Loving the vid Janek, what model of the H9 do you have? According to their website theres the H9 Core, H9 Harmonizer and the H9 Max?

  • @girlinagale

    @girlinagale

    2 жыл бұрын

    H9's are identical but the Core comes with only a few algorithms preloaded, the Harmonizer with a few more, and the Max has all algorithms, around 50. A Core or Harmonizer can be maxed out for a few hundred £, then they become a Max for life.

    If you were able to use 2 or more effects at a time on the H9, would you consider it way better than the HX?

  • @janekgwizdala

    @janekgwizdala

    4 жыл бұрын

    First of all I don't think I know enough about either pedal to really comment on what is better on one than the other. And I think that what perhaps makes the H9 good at the things it's good at is that it does only do one thing at a time. If it branched out into being able to layer a lot of things on top of one another, then perhaps the individual components would not be as strong. And then with the HX Stomp, I think it processes lots of less intensive elements very well concurrently. I'm happy to be using both, and I think once I get my midi programming sorted out, there will be so many pros to having both on my board. I also believe that technology is advancing at such a rate, that in 5 years time, there will be things possible in units of this size, that none of us saw coming.

    You don’t need a bank of different keys. If you want D minor that’s 2 chord in the key of C major. The 3 chord in B-flat major. The 6 chord in F major. Use the performance switch to change the keys. You just need to know what mode you want...

    why'd you unplug the pedals to change the order? you know the es5 can do that for you right? also you can bypass from the ipad, its the bottom left button

  • @janekgwizdala

    @janekgwizdala

    4 жыл бұрын

    The H9 was originally not in one of the pedal loops of the ES5 when I started, as I'm also working on programming some modulation things in the eventide, and I want that to be after anything the ES5 is giving me. Eventually it'll all be controlled by midi which should make the entire thing run pretty smoothly.

    I have felt that about a lot of pedals that are no longer with me. And the older I get, the more I realize I'm probably not using the pedal to its full potential before I give up on it. It is so often user error, rather than the pedal not being able to do what I think it should be able to. So from now on, budget allowing, I'm trying not to get rid of any pedals...

    Someday folks will back off of bassists, not critique how we choose to play our instruments and just let us be musicians however we see fit to do so.

    Is it part of a bass player’s standard duties to have so many effects? Certainly not, but I honestly didn’t start loving effects until I played bass. Not our fault the instrument sounds so damn good with effects.
