that bass is gorgeous.
You have such a gift for teaching. Never condescending, overly complicated or showing off... just the nuts and bolts. Hats off to you, bud.
Hey man thanks for tuning in! In all honesty there are SO many approaches and none of them are wrong... just different... and some work better in different situations. So... I'd try and get a few different approaches, that way you'll give your self more options when you're playing. S
@Warfender Hey man thanks for checking out the lesson. The chords are not diatonic... meaning they don't all fall within one key center. To get really specific the chords are - Am7, Bbmaj7#11, Cmaj7. The corresponding modes would be A Aeolian, Bb Lydian and C Ionian. Saying that, if you're practicing the pentatonic scales over these chords you don't have to think like that. Hope that helps mate. Scott.
Ahhhh finally I've found someone teaching bass online in a simple, slow manner! Thank you!
i love it when he goes in on 2:37- 2:41
Scott, you are such an intelligent guy. thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with the world.
I just got back from walking around my house trying to find the smoke detector that needed a new battery! LOL

As always great job and very inspirational. P.S. - Safety first! replace the battery in your smoke alarm, it keeps beeping ;)
Not to mention the crystal-clear instruction.
Thanks for these video lessons, Scott!...I've ascertained a lot of crucial information about bass guitar from them and I believe it has substantially improved my playing...I thank you very much for sharing your adroit knowledge of this instrument and I hope to learn more from you in the future!...
Good lesson. Thanks
Super tutorial ... I get so much benefit ... God Bless you...
you are a suberb bassist and teacher :)
Another cool lesson. Thanks, bro
Great lessons Scott! I have always used pentatonic scales having a blues approach but have never thought of pentatonic major scales! I usually find the chord root and test the third if the flatted third works I play minor pentatonic runs if it doesn't then I play major scale style runs but it never occurred to me to play pentatonic major scales really cool like I said love your lessons thanks again!
@hahabass Great stuff man! Glad it's doing the job I wanted it too ;)
Ur the best LOVE ur teaching.
Nice lesson and playing bro!
Damn you Scott Devine I've just checked the whole of my house from ground floor to the loft trying to find which smoke alarm needs a new battery!!!
@Ingratil The scale degrees of the major pentatonic are 1-2-3-5-6 while the scale degrees of the minor pentatonic are 1-b3-4-5-b7, but you'll find the exact same notes in say C maj as you do in its relative minor Ami.
great lesson...thank you
thanks great lesson.jm
you are great mate thanks
It's hilarious how many people commenting think you wear the gloves to prevent sweat and to get "that great tone" - and want to know where they can buy some. Regardless - a great lesson! A little bit of overdoing the "shake" but spot on accuracy. Chord tones, arpeggios, and pentatonics have completely changed my playing for the best.
right to the guts of how to potentially use the pentatonics. thanks Scott.
E ao mano blz sou aqui do Brasil curto suas aulas msm nao entendo o ingles mas observo suas escalas e o modo quevc ensina muito boa suas aulas e muito aproveitativa mas um inscrito abraço que Deus te abençoe Paz!!!!
Good teacher
Very cool!
so basically you use pentatonic scales to help make licks or can you expand/mix it with other scales to make root notes/licks with it?
@morenoh149
3 жыл бұрын
I'm a noob. But its seems like the pentatonic makes the ear want to keep listening for a resolution. So its good for licks (improvising, fills) and good choosing a next root when jamming.
So youd do the individual pentatonic scales for each respective chords? Not just staying on the Am pentatonic?
Awesome mate cheers :)
great vid.
HI MAN!!! I LEARN A LOT OF TIPS AND TECHNIQUE FROM YOU...
Man, I know it's not as great an accomplishment as playing jazz heads, but these pentatonics really give me a hell of a kick everytime I try them. They sound so bluesy and intense, don't know why...
Nice tone
great stuff...
these lessons would make so much more sense if i had ever taken formal lessons
@TwinMillMC Yeah, that's amazing.
dude, awesome videos! I've learned a lot! I really have to ask, what's up with the gloves?

@TwinMillMC Oops ;)
Thnx for the lesson, Scott...btw, what Brand and model of bass guitar is that ??
You may answered to this question but I'm new to your amazing videos :) I would like to know why you have gloves while playing and how they can help in playing. Thanks for your videos, I'm learning so much stuff :D
and it made me look at mine... glad i read this before i actually got up.
One love
Hello I tried to do that run when you went down the neck how did you connect that. Run
Hey Scott. Thanks for the video, man. A question regarding using either the major or minor pentatonic scale. Do you play either one depending on the chord? When you were doing a run in Am, were you doing the A minor pentatonic, since the chord is a minor chord? And, the B Major pentatonic when doin a run on the BbMajor, and so on...
I like
Yes, I understood it some time earlier
I prefer the genandtonic scales.
@devinebass Not diatonic is what I was presuming, but just wanted to make sure, as I was confused if it was around a single key center. Very cool lesson. I do something similar to this, but in Diatonic more like you later lesson doing a penatonic each side of C for 3 postitions. I have one also for all five pentatonic shapes in the mode postions. I like this one as it breaks me out of my normal practice rutine!!!!
Hey, anyone have advice for transitioning from upright bass to electric bass? I played 6 years of upright, i just bought a fender jazz bass, and now I'm going to start that.

I'd say watch your back. When I play out a 4 hr gig my left neck scapula kills.I have to sit in a tall bar level chair to ease the pain
thank you Scott... such a great teacher
I just took down every smoke alarm in my house.....then read the comments. LOLOL great video though!!
that lick at 2:05 and 2:36
Hi Scott. I have a friend who plays guitar and he has the same problem that Ettiene Mbappe has. He rots all his strings within a week of playing due to his acidic sweat. He was very relieved when i told him about the glove you have. Could you tell me exactly what brand the glove is and where to get it? thanks a lot. and by the way i watch your videos and learn a lot. you are awesome.
I want to see some tabs
@666patrickbateman666 Lol... it's my fire alarm running out of batteries ;)
belo baixo, pra que essa luva preta ???
That wink left me feeling slightly violated..
your bass and lines are breathing in your hands))!!!even in simple lines the sound so alive))

Your scale consist of 7 notes, the 2 3 and 6 are minors. If you're playing the C major, Dm Em and Am are your minors.
My best online GURU
@ZioGigietto mate, check out his website, he explains it there.
What kind of strings should i use if im playing smooth jazz or r&b ?...i wanted to get a set of flat wound strings...i have round wound strings but they sound too bright for that smooth sound im looking for , i bout the round wounds cause they were cheap .

Im sorry if you did explain this but i just dont understand why when u do the minor A pentatonic you do A -C -D-E-G-A? I though you had to skip the 4th and the 7th right? But from what i know your skipping the 2nd and the 6th why is that? Help anyone?
Guys, maybe i'm just stupid, but i was defeated in trying to find tabs and notes of that video on scottsbasslessons(point)com. Could you post me straight link to them? Thank you. English is not my foreign language.
whats with the gloves?
nothing! Keep playing! you'll get better! :D
This is still confusing especially when you talk about the A minor scale
yeah I just don't get why he doesn't let you know what frets he using. It would take maybe 2 seconds and really help out beginners who don't know the fingerboard by heart yet

what s up with the gloves man? cold?
☺🤓
Are bass runs the same as bass fills? I thought this was called a fill to be honest.
Why was A played as minor and B and C played as major?
@Zloben
7 жыл бұрын
Because he's playing in the key of F major/D minor.
really good stuff - some feedback, why is the camera so far away from the action and why oh why are you wearing gloves that hide your fingers ? i've seen a few vids that i need a zoom to see the frak'n bass
your methods and appproach Much more usefully than MarloweDK)
you're an awesome bassist, but why do you where gloves?
ROFLMAO, Running around my house, looking for the smoke detector that has a dead battery. Guess I wont find it.....its at your house......Says allot for my JBL's really sounded like it was here.....GJ Scott, thanks for the lessons.
It sounds like it wants to join in, hehe.
Helemaal okay
TYPE OF BASS IS THAT???
@ZioGigietto He has a skin condition on his hands, that's why he wears gloves. He's actually even more of an amazing player to be able to play this well while wearing gloves.
It's an A Phrygian chord progression.....
So you just did runs with the pentatonix
Better than MarloweDK :)
