@eric nollow Huh? Only if you have debt that you can't cover. Label and publishing companies are about the cash flow. Most businesses are. The conflict is between the art and business for most music companies. Ultimately, money wins out and the art takes a back seat. That said, good businesses look at the big picture and understand the nuance of marketing. Protecting copyright laws are critical for capitalism to succeed. However, you also can't be a tyrant about it otherwise it stifles creativity and ultimately, you're own cash flow.

@eric nollow #1. The majors still own a vast majority of the great catalogs though their massive publishing arms. #2. The labels says indie ... but somehow the majors still have a hand in the labels. Don't get dinner by the labels. #3. While the internet platform has helped artist bypass the Majors ... at least distribution, the labels still have huge influence. Just vet where the major artists have signed onto. Then check what majors the labels they hooked up to. You are correct though. I think the better artists are independent. However, they are not the ones blocking Rick. It's the damn major publishing companies.

I've been playing guitar for like 16 years. I'm "self taught" and this video made me realize that I really "Haven't taught myself much" 😂 Always avoided the "theory basics" and "studying" part of guitar. I think it's time to start. I'm 35 now and becoming much more interested in actually knowing what I'm playing. Thanks Rick! You're the man.

Been playing for 14 years and my laziness means I do the equivalent of counting my fingers to find what key.. I was in band class in high school and somehow must have avoided this lesson haha

Same here! Never thought I would start all over again, haha ! 41 btw...

The whole scale, mode, chord and arpeggio thing can be extremely intimidating. I teach private lessons and figured this out to help my students feel less intimidated. 1.) Every mode, chord and/or arpeggio comes from a scale, regardless of it's tonality etc. 2) Every scale is (essentially) a variation of the C Major scale. All the sharps and flats are applied to the notes of the C Major scale to create the new scale/key (Circle of Fifths). When you think of every scale as a permutation of a C Major scale and realize every chord is a voicing permutation of the same scale, it gives a simple foundation to build on for the whole amazing world of theory, songwriting and improvisation. Hope that all makes sense to you and helps you in your own personal explorations.

The natural notes stand out on piano because they're the white keys and the accidentals are the black keys. On guitar, there is no such grand distinction. It's more about the interplay of fretting patterns with the elements of music, which is why I like Beato's approach better.

Really helpful I'm making my way through the Beato book, but having Rick explain is really awesome.

I've used the roman numeral/connecting modes to teach songwriting, soloing over non diatonic chords, modal improv, identifying key, and on and on. Definitely one of if not the most effective "aha moment" scenarios I've seen in a students life, when they understand how it all goes together. Showing the ii,iv,vi major and iv and v minor "tricks" also is a light bulb popper.

Great job Rick! I graduated 30 years ago with degrees in Music Composition/Theory and Audio Engineering, . I've been writing music most of my life and produce other bands in my home studio. Now my teenage kids are my band (bass and drums), and I'm teaching them simple music theory to be better players. Because I memorized this stuff years ago; modes, scales, progressions, etc. come easy for me (It's natural, without a conscious effort). But, when I try to explain theory to others, I feel like I need to pull out my old text books for a refresher. I plan to buy a couple copies of you book to share with them and other musicians I am working with. Keep up the channel and the good work!

This is so interesting and useful! I've played for 50+ years and never learned to read music, I couldn't do it no matter how much I tried. But the scales make sense to me somehow. I'd need another 50 years to learn the stuff Rick is talking about.

I always end up using extended chords to solo over, not only because they sound great in general, but because you can general switch up modes/scales on the one chord and basically change the dominant note in the chord by the scale you're playing.

The biggest insight I got this year from Rick is that the semitones in the modes are the most emotionally expressive--are the intervals that emotionally characterize the mode. I've also noticed myself (while writing melodies) that the non-chord tones are typically the most emotionally expressive (especially if played on the beat rather than between chord tones and only in passing).

Semitones are a semitone away from a (triad) chord tone - they want to resolve; non (triad or 7th) chord tones are suspension, extension, and embellishment tones - they add extra color.

He covers this material beautifully in the Beato book - after struggling for years, I finally got it 😎 I don’t consider myself that smart, so if Rick can make it clear to me, your probably golden. In that same vein, one word of caution about the aforementioned Beato Book - if you buy it and take the PDF to Office Depot to get it printed, make sure you do *not* have it printed in color! When I picked up my order, the bill was $312.00! 😳 That said, it looks great in color, so I did buy it and try to read a little bit everyday. My belief is that if I read it everyday for a year, my printing cost drops to only 85 cents per day 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓 Rock on Rick, you’re the man!

That's restored my understanding of the circle of fifths perfectly. We did this in an after school class once, but I basically forgot how it went. Not any more !!

This is one of two channels that I watch that I can’t (or don’t) really apply to my life in any practical way. I’m not a musician. I don’t play an instrument (I played a Trumpet in 7th grade Band). But I love music, so here I am. The other is the 8-Bit Guy channel. I don’t have any vintage computers or video systems, but I like the instructive method of the channel, and the enthusiasm for the genre. I guess I’m saying I appreciate the approach to old tech on that one and music here, and wanted to thank you for what you’re doing. I have a guitar here, which belongs to my son, and thinking of picking it up. Maybe. 🤔

Do it man. It will take a lot of patience to begin with but within a few months your muscle memory will start to kick in etc... I would have to say the first couple of years were some of the most frustrating yet most rewarding times learning an instrument. Stick with it. We all had to start somewhere. Good luck.

Page 14, already learnt something kinda fundamental, that just hadn't sunk in before. Worth it for that alone, and I got another 450 pages to go...yes, I didn't realise that music notation appears to be written on the chord triads, which makes understanding them easier, and reading sheet music easier, and 7th chords are simply adding the next step in sheet music...
